Goin' Be Grillin
We have been enjoying some beautiful warm days. Minime has been asking for a barbecue. Yesterday, we put our roll cart on asphalt and headed up to our local Home Hardware to see was was up for offer.
This MarshAllan model was the cheapest and the lightest. There was a cast iron version available but it was considerably more expensive and heavier. I did not relish the idea of carting it a few blocks to the beach and then back up hill and so I exercised frugality over a desire for quality.
The grill did not come assembled. I spent about an half an hour this morning putting it together. It was a pretty easy job. The directions were straight forward and only a screw driver was required to tighten the screws.
Believe it or not, I have never barbecued. So today will be my first shot. I got a bag of match-ready charcoal and so hopefully it won't be too hard. Wish me luck. Hotdogs and steak are on the menu.
Like all days we got our homeschooling out of the way first. We continued in with our study of New World Civilizations and the Nazca. Today will looked Piquios, their irrigation system and what can be supposed from a piece of potter.
From our studies ...
Snow and rain would fall in the Andes Mountains. In the South American spring, the snow would then melt and flow down to the arid coast of the Nazca people. The piquios trapped the melt-water in underground cisternsm as it flowed through the piquios. Much of the water flowed underground. The water remained cool and temperature regulated its surroundings.
The killer whale may have been a powerful nature god to the Nazca. Not only was he seen on their pottery, but also depicted in the famous Nazca Lines.
The Nazca lived in a very arid environment where water was the most important thing for survival.
The killer whale is an aquatic animal, and it may have represented a kind of sympathetic magic to convince nature to send them water.
We had to create a couple enquiry questions to expand on our hypotheses.
- When do the killer whales visit the Peruvian coast?
- When does the snow melt in the Andes?
From out studies ..
Killer whales visit the coast of Peru between the months of July and October. Their migration may have happened during an important time for the Nazca agriculturally, or with regards to food collection. They may have eaten the same fish as the whales. Alternatively, according to Nasa, the snow in the Andes melts in September and October, so the arrival would have signalled indeed that water was on its way.

I like the question method of learning. The question itself motivates young minds into self learning. As for for the grill, just keep the heat even and you should have no problem. The stregnth of the fire is controlled by the amount of oxygen allowed in the system and somewhat in the placement of the charcoal.
Got it:) Even heat and lots of air:)
Hope it went well !PIZZA
Ha ha;) It was a learning experience:)
Thank you:)
Good luck with the grill! I have a gas grill in the back that I use irregularly, though I have a firepit I use more often for hot dogs and smores. I've had this long standing desire to build a brick oven (with bricks, of course) and a coffee hutch and covered bench from recycled pallets. As always, "maybe this summer."
I like how you use projects and questions to teach the little one. It's so much more effective to teaching critical thinking than rote memorisation. You have my admiration for that.
Your background could be great. Yes, I'd love an outdoor pizza oven. Be so good:)
Thank you. I spend so much of my time learning with him and so I can follow a more socratic style of learning.

Beautiful photos!
Quite interesting fact about the snow melting in Andes. I didn't know it before.
They are on the other side of the equator and seasons are switched.
The way we see technology has advanced so much and made our lives so much easier that whatever we need is available to us comfortably. All these flowers looks so beautiful and amazing.
Indeed, technology has done son. I guess I should complain that my ready made charcoal took so many ready-made matches ... lol:)
