There is Always something New to Discover in the Asian district of St Anne Street [EN - FR]
It's always after a good visit to the Louvre that you're closest to this long and narrow St Anne street, and for the little story, this street is apparently not named after the saint, but more in honor of Anne of Austria, Queen of France and wife of Louis XIII.
Hello everyone, I'm back in #MarketFriday, the community started by @dswigle where there are always new things to discover around the world. I hope you had a great week and that your weekend is looking just as good, if not better !
So here we are in this street which is almost exclusively composed of Japanese and Korean shops, restaurants and supermarkets. There are not really any Chinese shops in this area, for that it's better to go to Belleville or the Place d'Italie area.
Today we're going to try this Japanese restaurant "Naniwaya", a place we've passed many times but never tried before.
Here is the menu which is in both Japanese, French and English, so I recommend you enlarge the pictures a little to see it more clearly. We quickly place our order and you will see in a few moments what we have taken...
In the meantime, we enjoy watching the cooks go through the motions behind the bar we're sitting in front of. Usually I sit at a table more often, but this was the last few seats available and basically it was a good idea to watch the preparation of tempura, noodles, misō soups and onigiri.
These are the dishes selected by my companion. For starters, there is the traditional misō soup and a raw vegetable salad. For the main course, there is a Japanese beef curry.
For my part, the dishes arrive in dribs and drabs. The first one is an onigiri, a triangle of rice (sushi one or not) and in which one can find crumbled salmon, tuna mayonnaise, or marinated plums.
Then came my main course, soba, buckwheat noodles with a raw egg. At the time I was surprised by the red threads, but they were in fact very fine threads of pepper.
As the noodle soup is hot, the egg cooks when mixed with the rest of the seaweed and small freshly chopped onions.
A few moments later, our plates are well finished. I know that in some parts of the world it is considered good manners to leave things from your order. For my part, I find it very hard to waste food that has taken many steps and efforts from the farmers and first of all from Nature.
We are back on the street and I have taken some pictures of other restaurant fronts so you can see a bit more of the scenery. But we're going to go to a supermarket called "ACE Market" which I wouldn't have taken a picture of as it was quite crowded. But that's not the most important thing and let's have a look at the shelves of this shop...
One of the first things that catch my eye are these chestnuts in sugar syrup, a sweet that I have never tasted but which must resemble our "marrons glacés". The price is also quite high for only a few chestnuts and even though I am curious, I don't buy any.
For the time being, we buy these seaweed flakes, a mixture in which we also find sesame seeds and salt.
Here we have fried onions and the traditional katsuobushi, dried and grated bonito - a fish like tuna. We don't buy either, I make the onions myself and we already have the bonito at home.
These are the different curry cubes that are used in both Japan and Korea. Here again, we already have what we need at home :)
On the other hand, we were out of soup misō and this is the packet we decide to have. For me it's kind of the ideal dish when you feel like eating light, or even very light !
There is also a large section devoted to frozen food, but I am rarely interested in it. For one thing, I don't like the idea that we consume energy to keep things that we may consume years from now. As a result I prefer fermented, candied or dried things. The second reason is more obvious, we only have a very small fridge without a freezer and that has been enough for us for about ten years :)
The last shelves we visit are those of sauces, soy, Teriyaki and many others, and the one dedicated to the different oils. Here, for the time being, we take a cold-pressed sesame oil. It is an oil that I use sparingly and that brings a lot of taste. I may prepare a recipe soon with these few ingredients... or a Japanese curry ?
Voilà, that's it for today !
I wish you a good weekend again and I hope you have felt some of the atmosphere of this street in the centre of Paris through this article. Thank you for your time to visit and read :)
Take care of yourself and your loved ones, see you soon,
<3
<3

Hey @anttn
I could maybe write in Japanese for this comment... haha, just kidding, but I had some Japanese moments these days, but of course, I have no clue.
I would gladly try soba, it looked tasty and I was also wondering what would be those red threads. So sliced red paprika. Cool.
From the shop... chestnuts in sugar syrup? I have never tried that but I do like chestnuts. Roasted chestnuts but also cooked and ground, with whipped cream 😍
Haha ! I would love to see that @mipiano ! Imagine my level in Japanese XD ! My partner learned a bit of it and try to train me but it was complicated, needs soo much time to practice... like for an instrument.
Those ones were simple but deliciously prepared, I hesitate to ask for a second bowl as it wasn't that much ^^
Chestnuts are the best, just for the anecdote, the two regions where my family comes from (Ardèche and Corse) are well-known for the culture of those fruits (or is it seeds btw ?)
Enjoy your weekend 😘 !

How disappointing! St. Anne Street is not named after a Saint but a Queen. Hello! Hello! @anttn It is always good to see you on #MarketFriday!
I did find it interesting that this area is where many Korean and Japanese shops/stores and restaurants are and yet, the Chinese shops are in Belleville. Maybe the separation to differentiate. I know it doesn't seem possible, but, I have seen people ask if it is Japanese or Chinese. Japanese is much healthier, given their tendency to use fresh and raw ingredients—the Chinese cuisine's deep-fried proteins and all the spices and condiments are not as good. Now that I have that sorted, I see why you love Japanese food. I like sitting at a table too, it allows for more privacy if you are with someone, but, I enjoy watching a real chef or talented cook put a meal together. I even learn a few tricks along the way. Oh, the soba!! Yes, please! The threads of pepper had me scratching my head before I read it. Nice touch and is very tasty looking. I cannot lie. I know there are some cultures where it is polite to leave a taste of food on your plate, but, I really don't like waste. My grandfather used to say, waste not, want not.
The Ace Market has some interesting items. Chestnuts in syrup? Not familiar with them I do love chestnuts, but, they are really expensive here, even before the pandemic boosted all prices. Now they must be like buying gold. :) My father roasts them over an open fire, usually outdoors. I can imagine them popping in the house!
I have never tried the miso instant soup, we have only made our own. I have been duped by the instant packages that I no longer try, but, it does seem like it would do in a pinch. So many interesting bottles of sauces and such at Ace. I do love looking at what they have.
I have to thank you for bringing us along with you today, although the Louve was skipped! :) Next time!
#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world. Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday
Rules of the Road to Join #MarketFriday!
1.Go to any type of market, or anywhere where you pay money for a service. It can be a museum, a movie theatre, or an auction. Be creative!
2.Tell us a little bit about the market or the event. What brought you there? What did you buy? How much did it cost? We like to compare prices, otherwise, it is just pictures of a market!
3.Post the pictures! No out-of-focus ones, please! Tell a little bit about the pictures that you post. Having many pictures to scroll through does not make a better post without explanation.
4.Use the MarketFriday Community Platform to post #hive-196308 (this is not required, but appreciated) If you don't, then #MarketFriday should be your first tag
5.Following me and reblogging the post so more see it would be appreciated !! Not a rule, just appreciated, more vision for more views on your posts!

8.Drop the link into the MarketFriday comment section so I can find it
#MarketFriday loves you!
Hi @dswigle 👋 !
Yeah, I was a bit surprised when I did my research ! But after all, maybe that queen was a saint ?!
Now I have to say that I prefer Japanese food too, even if not everything is wrong with Chinese food, but for sure, from the point of view of a healthy and balanced diet, it is clearly better ! It was a nice experience to be seated at the bar and I already look froward the next occasion :D
Chestnuts are really like gold indeed ! It's even hard for me because I come from two regions, Ardèche and Corsica where they grow in abondance..! Let's plant some Chestnuts Trees ;-)
Most of the time we also prepare our own miso, but sometimes I've to say we don't have the time... Though it's better in all consideration to do that by ourselves !
Many thanks again for taking the time to visit, I'm always touched by the energy you put into things !
I wish you a good and pleasant week ahead 😘
Hello @anttn looking at the empty plates I can say the food was delicious ;)
Now we find more and more Japanese and Korean restaurants having a multilingual menu with a translation.
It makes life that much easier.
It is good to see the trend of ingredients being depicted with pictures so that you know what you are ordering.
This helps specially if you are trying to order something vegetarian or vegan.
I enjoyed your visit.
As per the chestnuts I enjoy prefer the freshly roasted ones which invariably makes one feel hungry just by the smell of the chestnuts being roasted.
It was indeed really delicious !
But as you mentioned here, sometimes, the simpler the better ! And I've to say that for me it's the same, I tend to prefer the freshly roasted hehe :)
Take good care dear @thetimetravelerz. I hope you're doing well lately !
I have fully recovered and am doing well. Thanks for asking dear @anttn
As always it is good to hear from you :)
I remember if you walk towards the Eiffel tower you may come across some brown colored fruits on the ground which look similar to chestnuts but they are actually horse chestnuts non edible ones.
Are there any chestnut trees close to where you live?
Good ! Me too, totally :D
Mmh, I don't think those are edible chestnuts, more the horse chestnuts indeed...
Unfortunately, the close spots where I can find some are rather far from Paris... It's a pity because I love that so much and here they're selling it at indecent prices ^^ !
May you have a good day dear @thetimetravelerz, take good care 😇 ✌️
You are 100% right about the price point though I discover during my stay in Switzerland that the fresh Chestnut sellers near the University area seems to be more reasonable in terms of price so is the food, clothing and the rest of the stuff as they are mostly catering to students who are on a budget.
Not sure if it is the same for Paris.
I have another idea...
Since it is Already April and if my memory serves right April May is the time for the Chestnut trees to bloom. They can be recognized by the bright pink and sober pink blooms.
So you could do a post about them and I would gladly share it on twitter, threads etc.
The proceeds of that post can go towards buying some chestnuts for you.
What say dear @anttn ?
You too take good care and have a wonderful day 😇 ✌️
Yes, indeed, sometimes and in some corners, the shopkeepers adapt, but Paris has become such an expensive city, I mean, it already was, but now it's over the top!
That could be an idea haha 😂 !
I just had my brother by phone and he told me that the season was between October and November ! So I believe we'll have plenty of time to prepare our chestnuts takeover plan ^^ !
Thanks you, may the week be good to you 🌱
Yes I agree @anttn
Paris can go over the top when it comes to prices so whenever I am there and need to buy stuff I look for the discount section of the Casino stores or carrefour store plus always on the lookout for any discount coupons or ongoing promotions.
Without them my piggy bank savings and budget travelling would cut short my trips considerably.
Last when I checked the La chapelle area that was the only place I could still buy a pastry in Euro 1 can you imagine that?
Well that was in 2017 and a lot has happened since then so not sure how much the prices have increased for those Euro 1 sweet treats and if they are still selling them there or have shut shop.
Though there were quite a few shops back then.
Though I am not adding the cost of the metro ticket to the price since I happened to be there and the shops proudly displayed these Euro 1 treats displayed in glass display counters facing the road and looked like a bargain in a place like Paris or anywhere else in Western Europe.
Thanks for the update about the Chestnut season so we have a plan and shall implement it when the time comes ;)
Have a great week @anttn
Yes, that in itself has become quite untenable ! That's also why we're looking to move more to the countryside, grow our own vegetables and be more self-sufficient...
If you tell me the name of the shop or the one of the pastry, I could go and check for the actual price :)
Have a good weekend ✌️
Dear @anttn
I wish I had the name of the shop maybe I have a receipt or a pic would need to check however I can tell you the location.
I came out of Gare Du nord station and walked towards La Chapelle
Stopped at Krishna Bhawan Restaurant for lunch and when I came out moved on the main street towards the left side not towards Gare Du nord and there were a couple of shops managed by Sri lankan people. I picked the pastries from one of those shops.
Its funny how the memory of the place is quite vivid and still I did not pay attention to the name, Perhaps I was feeling lazy after a full stomach.
That is so sweet of you to offer to do that but please do not take so much trouble to go there to investigate.
Interacting with you makes me relive the memories and through your pics I get to see a city that is so hard not to fall in love with over and over again.
Take care Dear @anttn
