Hello!

If you are buying a stargazing telescope, don't fall for the cheapest ones. This one is about 15€ to 20€ on Ali Express, Wish and all those other web stores selling cheap chinese products.

This telescope is the one my father got Miro for a Christmas present. Gladly it wasn't very expensive because it is absolutely good for nothing.

First of all, it was a pain to set up, as some of the screws could not be tightened because the threads would be too narrow and low for the holes they were in, so they'd just freely rotate and not tighten.

Secondly, you don't get to see any stars through it. You don't get to see anything, really. The optics are so soddy the only things you will see through this telescope are the dust specs and hair inside, and some blurry but dim lights. Something akin to what you'd see in out of focus microscopes.

There is no working way to focus in on anything, and because the tripod is so small, and the knobby can't get tight enough to keep the telescope stable, after trying to focus and then reposition, and then try to focus and reposition again, and then focus and try repositioning... you'll end up rage quitting before you see anything through the thing.

So after bursting a vein trying, I called my father, and he was devastated, and hastily wanted to rectify this horrible mistake of his. After all, Miro was interested in getting it working. (Although not as interested as he was about the gaming mouse he got.)

Yes, my father now wants to buy a real telescope for Miro. I wonder if there are any good, but relatively inexpensive ones out there that would do the job. He asked me if an Astromaster 114EQ is a good one, but after reading a few reviews I am not very convinced it is a good one for beginners.

I'm not even too convinced that Miro is all that interested in astrogazing. What he wants (or has made audibly clear he wants) is to learn to play the violin, and figureskating. Both expensive hobbies.

Yeah... well. That kind of post.

See ya!

Have you tried to point it at the Moon instead? It might be a good place to start to see if it is absolutely useless or that it is having trouble with tinier objects like stars or planets. Easier to locate too since it looks like a manual guidance one.

Oops, I must have missed your comment! Sorry about that... yep there is some visibility, but any and all details are missing.

If Miro really gets interested in astronomy, we'll definitely see if getting a real telescope is worth it.
