Let the Good Times Roll
Looking back at 16 March 2020 when we were returning to Durban after an idyllic week in the Western Cape, it still feels unreal that, despite a stringent Covid lockdown announcement, we were blissfully unaware of the ramifications Covid would have on the world.
I remember us being amused that some foreigners were wearing masks at the airport, which was abuzz with travelers anxious to get back home before lockdown, a new word that we became all too familiar with, in the months to follow!
Commercial airlines were grounded and as we know many became casualties of Covid!
Our son was in Russia at the time, booked an earlier flight with another airline, as Russia announced their lockdown. He was willing to lose the money spent on his original flight, as he wanted to get out before their borders closed. Later that same day the airline announced they were stopping all flights - money down the drain as they never refunded him!
He eventually flew back on a costly repatriation flight once their borders opened, a couple of months later than planned.
Traveling to Johannesburg recently, we were shocked to see almost deserted airports on departure and arrival; a whole bank of airline offices locked up, with many of them non-existent today.
Many of us lost money spent on flight tickets; the lucky ones were refunded while others eventually realized it was pointless fighting for money, as airlines across the globe were folding.
Johannesburg - a city abuzz with possibilities
Our trip up to Jozi was to say goodbye to our son, as I shared recently when I told of my boxing fight plight with boxes!
I'm struck each time we visit this city at just how green the suburbs are, and I can see why @fionasfavourites said:
Johannesburg is reputed to be the world's largest urban forest.
Our younger son took us to a really awesome restaurant-cum-sports-bar in a beautiful location, a short walk from his apartment.
The ambiance of this restaurant is great, and further enhanced by its decor, with fun phrases everywhere. Bossa really lives up to the promises of good times and memories, as we visited this again just after our older son flew across the waters.
'Do what moves you' is my kind of motto!
Bossa has various dining areas, from the pub to a more sleek dining area, and a lovely outdoor dining area that overlooks a small lake and gardens; a super laidback place to unwind after a day at the office.
They also have a really nice play area for children.
As luck would have it, many of the tables on the deck were reserved, but we were fortunate to find one as someone was leaving on our arrival.
Bossa offers:
FLAVOUR-FORWARD FOOD FOR EVERYONE
We aim to cater for almost every palate and occasion – from nachos and chilli poppers to crunchy salads to the best burgers in town.
When enjoying a meal at our establishments, you can always expect quality ingredients, generous portions and real value-for-money.
I settled for an old-fashioned ice-cold rock shandy while the men ordered a Belgium abbey beer, Leffe, with an interesting history, nothing to do with Johannesburg though!
As they were experiencing a heat wave, we all went for something light - the men ordered a wrap & salad, while I enjoyed a delicious salad with thinly sliced tender fillet steak.
Another empty airport greeted us when we said our goodbyes to the city of Johannesburg, and as we had time to waste, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast with a large cappuccino.
My Egg Benedict was absolutely scrumptious - served on an English muffin with crispy Bacon.
I stole some pics through the aircraft window as we started descending to King Shaka Airport, some 40km from Durban.
Although a little sad to have said our goodbyes, the rolling green hills of Kwazulu Natal greeted us, as if to say:
'Welcome back home, close to the ocean where you belong!'

I really liked the photos of the various places but also the things to eat must be really good
You made me realize that it was March 2020 that we were hurrying back from Thailand before it was too late. You also made me want to have beer!😄
Looks like some lovely memories.😊
We'd have laughed and never believed that we'd be wearing masks wherever we went hey! It was awful.
We had a lovely break in Joburg even though it was busy! That was a very good beer I must say, not too bitter, just perfect, I had to taste it, looked so good!
I so love your motto, Ma'am.
I say it's lucky that there are still opened restaurants in 2020 in that place because in my hometown, restaurants were closed at that time, and only the fast food chain was open. You must have a great time there before saying goodbye to your son.😊

Remarkable how you describe the empty airports of a world only just starting to realise how serious the pandemic was. How quickly it came on us.
I was following a motorcycle vlogger at the time, and on one post she thought it good that she didn't have to queue for the gym, but a couple of posts later she had to be evacuated from the South American village she was staying in, since the locals had her labeled as a threat to their lives.
That aside though, there are some great pics to go with the post.
If someone told me 5 years ago that this was going to happen to the world, I would have laughed and told him/her that they're crazy!
I remember going out after lockdown and being afraid to sneeze (I get hayfever 🙈) as people would look at one suspiciously.
But we are where we are now, so need to adapt in this new world, and just make the best of every day😊
Wonderfully sound viewpoint.
