Point-and-Eat: A Delightful Dining Experience at Heng Long Teochew Porridge & Rice

In the photography world, there is a thing called "point and shoot" which refers to the type of camera that most of the settings are automatically set by the camera and all you have to do is point to the subject and click on the trigger to shoot the photo. In the food world, there is a thing called "point-and-eat" which refers to the type of food establishment that pre-cooks the dishes and displays them for the customers to point to the dishes that they want to order and then the server will arrange them on the plate for the customer to eat. I made it up.

I'm not sure if it's a fact but it certainly is at the Heng Long Teochew Porridge & Rice restaurant.

The style of ordering here is quite straightforward. You simply tell which dishes would you like to order and then inform the server about the serving portions (i.e. good for 1, 2, or how many of you will be sharing the dishes). And then you will also choose between a bowl of rice or porridge.

For this dinner, I went for the porridge.

In addition, the dishes that I ordered were stir-fried pork strips, sauteed pumpkin, and stir-fried broccoli.

Among the dishes that I ordered, the broccoli is the one that I liked the most. It was perfectly cooked. It's tender enough and yet it wasn't overcooked. There's a right amount of seasoning while it also blends well with the flavor of the garlic.

The best part about this restaurant is that it's open until late at night. I think this is a good spot to go to after a night-long party in one of the pubs along the streets of Kampong Glam nearby.

My journey to the world of food.

point and eat, makes sense. Actually I like when a waiter comes to meet me at my seat and ask me what I will like to eat than having to go to select and point at what I want to eat. Although both are great, at least, you can see what you would eat before it is being served.

I agree. There are restaurants that have very welcoming staff where you may have a short discussion about the menu before you may order which is part of the experience.

While this type of restaurant that I dined at focuses in speed. It’s even faster than a fastfood restaurant 😂. To be frank, I felt the pressure while choosing for the dishes because the waitress is waiting for me to choose while there people queuing behind me haha

I bet the stir-fried pork strips complimented the sautéed pumpkin.🎃 That sounds perfect! Finding a good late-night spot can be a challenge, and it’s great to know this restaurant is available after a night out in Kampong Glam.
