From Familiar Ground to Unknown Shores
Ever since stepping off the plane some five weeks ago, there are some aromas that will always remind me of the Netherlands.
A Dutch goodie basket greeted me as I walked into my bedroom, yep, I have been really blessed. spoilt from day one!
This has been a journey filled with new discoveries and some surprises, like learning the aroma coming from coffeeshops certainly is not coffee! No, it's the pungent sweet scent of a once-forbidden substance, Durban Poison as it's known in my hometown. I told you all about that when I shared how it smells like Amsterdam.
Coffee is very good, and served in cafés, coffee trucks or coffee bikes, but I've been surprised that although the coffee is excellent, most Dutch cafés do not bother much about Latte art in the foam. This cup was the only one I've seen so far, and we've been to many coffeeshops cafés
I've really been enjoying the fabulous baked goods; ginger apple tartlet, and a berry tartlet.
Cinnamon is another aroma that hangs in the air of bakeries or food stands - Apple Pie, Pancakes, Poffertjies, Stroopwafels, Oliebollen; what else? Cookies, cereal, candy, an endless list.
I've been living in a cocoon away from the real world for the past five weeks while being spoilt by my son and his gal in their newly adopted country.
What has been the worst year of my life with many Unforseen Twists in Life's Journey, has been put on hold as we've been running traveling between beautiful small towns and cities, all a mix of historic to ultra-modern architecture.
Flying solo is something I will have to get used to, and this trip has shown me that it is possible; making new memories as well as the support of my precious family, and friends, some of them right here in Hive.
The big hole in my life however will always be there!
Back to new flavours, and new experiences, as well as some that are familiar.
The first home-cooked meal I had was Stamppot and Rookworst (Smoked Sausage), an authentic Dutch dish, real comfort food for cold winter nights. This dish is a combination of mashed veggies: potatoes, and other vegetables like spinach, carrots, kale, Sauerkraut, or turnips.
Did I tell you the Dutch vegetables and fruit are simply amazing?
Many of my Hive friends know I love cooking, and it's been a bit of a learning curve cooking here. I've never seen Red Currants in our stores back home and learnt it is full of health benefits, so natural yogurt and red currants became my favourite start to the day, but not until I've had my morning cup of coffee!
Would you believe these are tomatoes? I've never seen any tomatoes like these - some call them mushroom basket tomatoes. I used it to make a simple breakfast Omelette, but they're also excellent for sandwiches.
I have been trying to spoil the kiddos now and then with some old favourites using familiar ingredients, like home made pies for the freezer, and South African Rusks - similar to Biscotti, but not as sweet, more crunchy, and best when dunked into a cup of strong coffee.
The one thing my son misses is our meat, which is way better, as well as more affordable. Their fish is excellent though and as I'm not big on meat, I am quite happy eating more fish or vegetarian dishes, like these Spinach, Mushroom and smoked Cheese Quiches.
Dutch Cheese of course is the best, and that is another food I'm going to miss when back home.
I've been very impressed with the pumpkin displays and the different variants available in their local supermarket.
As my time in this wonderful country is almost at an end, I find myself looking back, remembering all the new experiences.
One that I'm super excited about is happening tonight, as my son and I will be attending a concert in Amsterdam to see one of my favourite musicians.
The ease of public transport, only five minutes away from our doorstep, and that we can attend this concert in the evening with public transport, still amazes me.
I will miss my little room-with-a-view, but leave the Netherlands with a heart full of thanks to my son and his special gal for the privilege of experiencing this unique corner of the world where I have felt at home from day one.
No wonder as some of my ancestors hail from here and other regions in Europe!

Congratulations, your post has been added to Pinmapple! 🎉🥳🍍
Did you know you have your own profile map?
And every post has their own map too!
Want to have your post on the map too?
I so get you about the new memories and new experiences: we have to move forward and they would want us to. But not having them to share them with. That's the hard part.
That is the hardest of them all Fiona, nothing can ever fill that void!
Stamppot! That's the stompf I told you about ages ago - I just didn't know how it was spelled. 😋 So easy to make, and really adds flavour and lightness to an otherwise stodgy dish. In my opinion at least :)
And the cheeses! Most people here in Sweden pronounce Gouda as go-daa, but our dutch friend have taught us to say schoo-dha. Which always confuses the people in the grocery store when we ask for it. 😹
It sounds like you've been having a great time in the Netherlands, and maybe found some new favorite recipes? If you can't get fresh red currants at home, maybe your Dutch friends can dry a batch now and then and send you by mail, so you can rehydrate them and cook jam, jellies, marmalade or cordial.
I remember you telling me about stompf!
I find that there are so many Dutch dialects and different pronunciations. We pronounce it gow-dah 😉
I should have cooked some jam while here, but did not have much time with all the running around, so will do that next time if they're in season, we went to the market when I arrived late September.
The weather changed almost overnight about a week ago, can feel winter is on its way.
My son wants me to come back next year late May or June when the tulips are flowering.
Nice chatting @treefrognada 🤗
OMG, the food is just so much better there than in America. I remember a little place we found near our Airbnb that served smoked salmon on toast and I think I had that three times during our visit. Have you tried the pickled herring with onions? Have a wonderful time at the concert!
On the train going home after an awesome Hauser show!
I just love smoked Salmon, and Pickled Herring with onions sounds amazing! I'm running out of time,
only 2 full days left and then it's back home.
Wonderful! You should definitely try the pickled herring before you leave. There are quite a few street vendors selling it. Enjoy the time you have left and safe travels. It sounds like you’ve made some great memories!
Experiencing life as has happened all in a year, filled with good/bad, happy/sad, a lot to absorb!
Holland is brilliant, sometimes life takes us along such strange paths keep us strong or learning new.
Sharing all these wonderful moments, keep them alive for when you arrive home and wish to go back to remember and read your online diary.
So very true Joan, what a mix of emotions it has been!
I'm already sad to be leaving here, it's just such a different lifestyle. Back at home we have to worry about basic services and crime, how things have changed!
I'm thankful I started writing about the experiences while still fresh in my mind, and still have a whole lot to share, but it's something to look forward to, and great that I can look back online. These photos will never fade, not so;)
Checking back into reality is going to exceptionally difficult going home trying to adjust to so much.
By going out the country into first world places, one realizes how exceptionally fast SA has gone downhill, all is not lost we must keep our hope up.
Keeping a diary on daily events I found useful over the years as ones memories start getting jumbled up slightly, stay safe!

The food certainly looks great over there and even those strange tomatoes look great. I also wonder why we do not have Red Currants here, and I bet that they taste very nice. So much to explore over there and your visit came at the exact right time, as it shows you that life simply goes on.
Your son and his gal are really special people, and we are glad that they are looking so well after you.
Blessings.

Yes the quality of food is so much better here, they have stricter health regulations as well. The only thing my son says is better in SA, is the meat, but fish is plentiful! We bought Boerewors at a South African shop in Utrecht, and were so disappointed as it was sweet, believe it or not! It looked good, but they lost a customer for sure!
We have children here that are hospitalized due to buying and eating expired food. I suppose that if that is to happen in the Netherlands it will be the end of the world for them. One thing that the South Africans can get right is the taste and quality of the meat and your son is right.
Imagine that! Sweet boerewors. Sacrilege for sure.
Take care over there milady.

As usual a beautiful and interesting blog @lizelle - How wonderful would it be if we had a little hotel in Amsterdam and could be near our sons!!
I would love to have a small Airbnb but away from the city, a house overlooking a canal. As long as it's close to the train station. That would be a dream come true!
For me too - I just love meeting new people and Airbnb really did it for me
