What type of wasp?
There are many types of wasps. Yellowjackets live in the ground. They are agressive. Some wasps live in trees others make paper hives.
You probably should venture out with a jar to catch a few.

I don't know much about wasp, but based on the ones I found a little everywhere (some that I smashed got stuck to my clothes...), it looks like yellowjackets. And I think they were in the ground and for sure aggressive, so that seems to match. I'll try and find one that isn't too smashed. Probably won't go in this direction for a while...
