Memories of a Sardinada 🐟 Memorias de una Sardinada

Having the fortune of having friends in a place you don't know makes you live more native experiences that you might miss because they are not always mentioned in tourist guides or brochures. A few years ago on a trip to Barcelona, Spain, Eli, one of the friends I visited there, invited me to a Sardinada, an event that takes place every year at the end of June in a coastal town called Vilassar de Mar.

Tener la fortuna de contar con amigos en un lugar que no conoces hace que puedas vivir experiencias más autóctonas que quizás te perderías porque no siempre se mencionan en las guías o folletos turísticos. Hace unos años en un viaje por Barcelona, España, Eli, una de las amigas que visité allí, me invitó a una Sardinada, un evento que se celebra cada año a finales de junio en un pueblo costero llamado Vilassar de Mar.

Eli gave me the instructions to get there by subway and told me that she would be waiting for me at the first chiringuito (beach bar) that was on the way out of the station in the direction of the train. Another friend in common, Laura, was also going and I invited Nubi, my Venezuelan friend who hosted me in her apartment in Barcelona, she had been living there for a couple of years, studying a postgraduate degree in architecture, and as she didn't know about this event she was encouraged to join us.

Eli me dio las instrucciones para llegar hasta allá en metro y me dijo que me iba a estar esperando en el primer chiringuito (bar playero) que se encontraba al salir de la estación en dirección del tren. También iba a ir otra amiga en común, Laura, y yo invité a Nubi, mi amiga venezolana que me hospedó en su piso en Barcelona, ella tenía un par de años viviendo allí, estudiando un posgrado de arquitectura, no conocía este evento así que se animó a acompañarnos.

As it was still early we spent some time at the beach bar, chatting and having a drink and then we went down to Palomares beach, where the Sardinada takes place, a popular event that is part of the activities of the city during the Fiesta Mayor for San Juan (Main Festivity for St. John) and consists of a great sardine barbecue, with music, dancing and other cultural events, a great atmosphere!

Como aún era temprano estuvimos un rato en el chiringuito, conversando y tomando algo y después bajamos a la playa de Palomares, donde se realiza la Sardinada, un evento popular que forma parte de las actividades de la ciudad durante la Fiesta Mayor por San Juan y que consiste en una gran parrillada de sardinas, con música, bailes y otros actos culturales, ¡un gran ambiente!

The Sardinada is open to anyone who wants to attend and it was cheap, we paid 5 euros each and were able to eat a big plate that included sardines of course, bread with tomato, which is something traditional from Catalonia, and drinks such as wine.

La Sardinada está abierta a cualquiera que quiera asistir y era económica, pagamos 5 euros cada uno y pudimos comer un gran plato que incluía sardinas por supuesto, pan con tomate, que es algo tradicional de Cataluña, y bebidas como el vino.

Eli had brought a big handkerchief that he spread on the sand and there we sat down to share, everything was very tasty and we had a spectacular afternoon, I had never attended a Sardinada, I thought it was so cool 😃.

Eli había llevado un gran pañuelo que extendió sobre la arena y allí nos sentamos a compartir, todo estaba muy rico y pasamos una tarde espectacular, nunca había asistido a una Sardinada, me pareció genial 😃.

I was told that this event was started in the 1980s, on the initiative of the Socialist Group of Vilassar de Mar, formed in the late nineteenth century.

Me contaron que este evento lo empezaron a hacer en la década de 1980, por iniciativa de la Agrupación Socialista de Vilassar de Mar, formada a finales del siglo XIX.

While we were eating our plate, music was playing, both traditional rhythms that I don't remember their names as well as more universal sounds like percussion.

Mientras comíamos nuestro plato, la música sonaba, tanto ritmos tradicionales que no recuerdo sus nombres como también sonidos más universales como la percusión.

Then, when it was getting dark, we saw some boats coming to shore, I think they were fishermen and were part of the festivities.

Luego, cuando ya estaba anocheciendo, vimos unos barcos que iban llegando a la orilla, creo que eran pescadores y formaban parte de los actos festivos.

The festivity on the beach ended with a great fireworks display, for me it was a pleasure to attend this tradition, living this kind of experiences is one of the things I like the most about traveling. I hope you found it interesting, until the next #tbt!
