The food we eat in towns and cities does not reach us by magic, behind them there are many processes, some industrialized and other artisanal and even ecological, of the latter I come to show you a little, an experience I documented some time ago when I worked as a reporter. The location: the Venezuelan plains, specifically Apure state.

Los alimentos que consumimos en pueblos y ciudades no llegan a nosotros por arte de magia, detrás de ellos existen muchos procesos, algunos industrializados y otros artesanales y hasta ecológicos, de estos últimos les vengo a mostrar un poco, una experiencia que documenté hace un tiempo cuando trabajaba de reportera. La locación: los llanos venezolanos, específicamente el estado Apure.

As soon as you arrive at the camp you start to see natural life and many animals, like the cute little lizard in the photo.

Apenas llegas al campo empiezas a ver la vida natural y muchos animales, como esa simpática lagratija de la foto.

The place where I arrived with my co-worker (a cameraman) is a farm known as La Marisela, which is located near a town called El Samán. Upon entering we went to a house there to talk a little with the people about the agroecological projects they were developing and the information we needed for the audiovisual work we were going to do.

El sitio al que llegué con mi compañero de trabajo (un camarógrafo) es una hacienda conocida como La Marisela, que se encuentra cerca de un pueblo llamado El Samán. Al ingresar nos dirigimos a una casa que hay allí para hablar un poco con las personas sobre los proyectos agroecológicos que estaban desarrollando y la información que necesitábamos para el trabajo audiovisual que fuimos a hacer.

We explored the surroundings a bit and then we were taken to the fish farming area, where the laboratory, tanks and ponds were located, everything related to the reproduction and breeding of black pacu (colossoma macropomum), omnivorous fish that are native to the Amazon and Orinoco rivers.

Exploramos un poco los alrededores y luego nos llevaron al área de piscicultura, donde estaba el laboratorio, tanques y lagunas, todo lo referente a la reproducción y cría de cachamas (colossoma macropomum), unos peces omnívoros que son originarios de los ríos Amazonas y Orinoco.

The objective of this project is to provide the people of nearby communities and beyond with a cheaper and healthier protein alternative to beef, which dominates production in this part of Venezuela.

El objetivo de este proyecto es proporcionarle a la gente de las comunidades cercanas y más allá, la alternativa de una proteína más económica y sana que la carne de res, que es la que domina la producción en esta parte de Venezuela.

The idea is also to rescue the original food of the area, since before the Spanish colonization (who introduced cattle raising) the indigenous people lived mainly from fishing, from what they found in their environment.

La idea es también rescatar la alimentación original de la zona, ya que antes de la colonización española (quienes introdujeron la cría de ganado) los indígenas vivían más que todo de la pesca, de lo que encontraban en su entorno.

Livestock farming, as is well known, is highly polluting, and a project such as this one was designed so as not to impact the environment or the economy of those who raise the fish, because concentrated feed is not purchased for them, but rather they are given what is produced on these lands: grains, vegetables, pasture, fruits, etc.

La ganadería, como se sabe, es altamente contaminante, y un proyecto como este se pensó para no impactar el ambiente y tampoco la economía del que cría los peces, porque no se compra alimento concentrado para ellos sino que se les da lo que se produce en estas tierras: granos, verduras, pasto, frutas, etc.

When it was time to take some fish out of the lagoon to show us, we were also able to know the average weight they reach in a short period of time.

Cuando llegó el momento de sacar algunos peces de la laguna para mostrarnos, pudimos saber también el peso promedio que alcanzan en un corto período de tiempo.

They threw the net into the lagoon and then picked it up by one of its sides, carefully pulling out some black pacu.

Echaron la red a la laguna y luego la recogieron por uno de sus lados, con cuidado sacaron unas cachamas.

Then they put some of them on the scale to check their size. They told us that with the natural food they were given there, at six months they already weighed 1 kg. The specimens that grow in their natural habitat and reach adulthood can exceed 30 kg, impressive...

Luego pusieron algunas en la balanza para verificar el tamaño que tenían. Nos dijeron que con la alimentación natural que les daban allí, a los seis meses ya pesan 1 Kg. Los ejemplares que crecen en su hábitat natural y alcanzan la adultez pueden pasar de los 30 Kg, impresionante...

Another important fact they gave us is that in one hectare they can produce in a year, about 300 kg of black pacu. While we were at this farm, they prepared a meal for us that included these fish and it tasted very good.

Otro dato importante que nos dieron es que en una hectárea se pueden llegar a producir en un año, unos 300 Kg de cachamas. Mientras estuvimos en esta hacienda, nos prepararon una comida que incluía estos peces y su sabor es muy bueno.

It was a very good experience to learn about this project that produces accessible food for people with minimal ecological impact, I hope you found it interesting.
