The not-so-ordinary ordinary item challenge (30 days)

avatar

The end of 2022 is right in front of us. Just one more month, and we're in 2023. This year has been quite a wild ride for many of us. Great events, horrific world events, and everything in between. But for all of us, the days of 2022 passed, and usually, around this time, we think about what we have achieved, and perhaps, we choose to dwell and think about the failed missions as well.

This year, I wanted to do something differently. The cliché "what are we thankful for, and what will we do in 2023, and the years to come" may be a bit... cringe? But, if we think about the intention, we probably are skipping a few steps to "appreciate and plan for a better tomorrow". Oh boy, this sounds a bit... yeh... Oh well! About the approach; every year, we manage to experience about 365 days (+1 every four years), filled with 24 hours. And what did we do in these 24 hours? Did we do some things more than others? Did we use more stuff than the year before? What were our "ordinary" uses of objects and/or items during 2022? I'm getting quite enthusiastic about finding out my own!

To wrap up this year, I'll be spending a bit of time thinking about the stuff I use daily, or have used a lot this year. I'll try to share a little story about it, and think a bit more about it. For example, I could ask myself why I use these items.

This will be a bit of a challenge for me, since ordinary items may not seem so ordinary after all. But after some good old-fashioned thinking, I'm sure I will end up having a few.

The fast-paced life that consumes us

Whether you agree or not, too many around us life has turned into a fast-paced environment. And we don't have a choice but to participate in this environment. We raise the bar, set high expectations, and off we go. Eventually, all these different kinds of actions are performed without knowing why we started doing them. We consume so many things daily. But I wonder, aren't these things consuming us instead? Traditions changed. Occasions have to be fast and quick. We have to get over it, and before we know it, we request something in return as we might feel that we're missing out on something else. These are just a few examples of how the fast-paced environment consumes us.

I've always tried to live my life as thoughtfully as possible. But, whenever I think about these things, I catch myself doing things on auto-pilot. I wake up, turn on my computer, and start doing things. Eventually, I see myself staring at my screen, or wandering around the house, trying to be productive. The expectations consume me. So, how can I change this just a little bit? I thought it would be a cool experiment to see what items I use daily, throughout the year. More importantly, take time to ask me why it is that I use these things so much. In the beginning, I started using them for a reason, haven't I? How come I consume/use them carelessly on auto-pilot today? All these items didn't change, but I did. We all did. I'm looking forward to executing this challenge to dive a bit back into history and find out myself.

Great change starts with the little things in our lives

The not-so-ordinary ordinary item challenge - 30 days

With this challenge, I will try to see if I can blog, photograph, and write 30 days in a row. The challenging part is to photograph 30 items creatively with the tools that I have at home. I probably have to use 10-20 minutes max on every item. Oh dang, I already feel and know there's going to be a lot of fun involved with participating in this challenge. I wonder who makes up the rules... I should confront him.

With this challenge, I hope to raise more awareness for the things I use and consume. Even if I don't finish the challenge, I bet I will learn a lot about all the items that I do manage to photograph. I believe that many of us, including myself, use our ordinary items blindly without actually thinking about why we use them.

From a photographer's perspective, I already foresee a lot of cleaning. At least, a bit of cleaning, as portraying used objects, stuff needs to be a little bit dirty eh? Cleaning items are equal to taking care of objects, and when we take care of something, we automatically increase its lifespan of it. At the same time, I think there is a moment to connect with these ordinary daily used items. It might be a little bit too macro, but perhaps, we will look differently at our daily habits of consuming once we finish this challenge.

There are two aspects of this (personal) challenge. I'd like to have some fun with product photography, I'd like to see how 'creative' and 'fast' I can think of something, and work something out. It would be cool to see how to make monthly content for myself, and what it takes to do so. The other aspect is more about connecting with everyday life. What can we do better, what are things that I don't need, what is completely unnecessary, and what gives me joy and makes me feel happy? The last one may be a great way to be appreciative of even the little things in our lives. I also think it would be a great way to think a bit more about the origin of objects/items or think about why I have been using these items for quite some time.

Join the challenge

Feel free to follow and join me in this challenge. I bet you will have a lot of fun and learn more about yourself along the way. For me, it is a way to say goodbye to 2022 and to be a bit more aware in 2023.

To-do list

  1. Making a list of items (max of 30)
  2. Scanning online for inspiration
  3. "Connect" and write about these items
  4. Photograph these items
  5. Publish photographs and stories about these items with the #notsoordinary tag

Wish me luck!

Cheers,
Ruben

First!

Also, I love the title pages you’re designing for some blog posts. Personally, I think that the challenge is amazing. The more I can focus on what’s consistently present the more I think I can expand my view to see what life and happiness mean to me.

Remind me to make an introduction post for this challenge to start Thursday. I want to brainstorm my list today, once I’m at work at 11 on sticky notes or in my notebook.

Hi Ruben! we certainly live fast! as a freelancer, I work from home and sometimes my old colleagues, from when I was in a company, ask me if I'm not bored. Ha! At home it's also a whirlwind. 😵
I laughed a lot, because the first thing I thought is: I have to clean the mouse! and the tablet! and clean up the desk, that is, ...no "this angle would be better" "here is a good location to put such and such an object" Nooo! ...let's clean it up! 🤣
I think it's a cool challenge and I'll be sharing it on twitter for my friends. 😁

Hey Janet, haha yeah, it all starts with cleaning, right! This way, the challenge is already helping out in some way, doesn't it? Will you be participating? Thanks for the share!

What a fabulous challenge to write about everyday stuff! I would also see this as a great way to de-clutter and kind of 'pay-it-forward' as we have so much stuff that we don't use but could be really helpful for others.
I'd love to join but am a bit late plus December is my busy month so... I will be trying next year!

Thank you Lizelle, honestly, I had a hard time listing 30 things (which is probably a good thing regarding de-clutter and overall consumption). I think that is a great approach, it gives another meaning and a lot of value to the challenge.

You could always do this challenge in January, -starting in 2023 I'm bringing these items from 2022-, the whole idea is to get a bit more aware of what we use, how we use it, and most importantly; how it affects us as humans.

Life is spent setting goals and objectives and it is frustrating when the year ends and we don't even make a third of them.

I really like the challenges, this one is very interesting because it tries to focus on the simple things but at the end it will put us in a meditative and reflective stage, it's just great.

I found out about you through @livinguktaiwan's contest, even if I start a little late I will surely participate. Thank you and I wish that at the end of this challenge you will be happier than at the beginning. @rubencress 🤗

my ToDo list is a "Do List"

Great idea and I like the very thought-out opening post! I also give my best to live a thoughtful life, to enjoy the small things and be mindful about processes and things in my daily life. But the auto-pilot mode is just too helpful for everyday stuff and I believe we will not be able to live a semi-productive life without it. Even better if we use this challenge to appreciate the things at least once more. Also they are not granted - we live in a very luxury life to have electronics and helpful things in our homes that we do not recognize anymore.

It is a very deep topic but the challenge is a playful way to recognize automated processes and the things involved as they are and give them a bit of exposure and appreciation.

I have seen some very cool shots already on your daily posts. I will remember this challenge after we hit 2023 and will join it then. For me the end of the year is full of auto-pilot things and important stuff I have to accomplish so there is not a lot of time to focus on posting daily. January is often the month I can commit to such a challenge and perhaps I will join with short videos since I want to work on my filming and editing skills. They got very rusty over 2021/2022.

Wish you much luck and energy for the challenge!

December may not have been the smartest month to do this challenge lmao. It is usually the busiest month of the year. I do have to plan a bit around the holidays' xD.

Glad that you're going to join in man! Looking forward to seeing your stuff (or even videos) and thoughts. @thatkidsblack @nanixxx, and @livinguktaiwan sharing their thoughts as well. It's super interesting to have a peek at how we look at things (we mostly all know and have used them in our lives). We can relate to some parts and can become quite curious about how different we use/see/think.

I'm a few days in and have prepared some for the days to come, but bruh... 30 things for me was a massive challenge since I don't use that much stuff... I mean, I have some silverware on my list lol.

I followed to see what you share! That's fair, the challenge is difficult at this time of year, but I think precisely because we're near the end, reflecting on what you got lying around now works! Especially in my case, since I have too much clutter for my liking.

In any event, I wish you luck because if I'm being open, Ruben's support outside of the challenge has been wondrous.

What a great idea! I love a good challenge once in a while :)
For now I am too busy at the farm and I barely post once every week but I'll definitely keep this concept at the back of my mind for later!
From what I have seen you are doing great!
Good luck till the end :)

This is the second time I bump on the challenge, first, I saw @hetty-rowan publish a few and now I saw a cross post of this challenge. That's it, I'm joining :)

Going to create the list today and start as soon as possible.

Thanks for the inspiration @rubencress

Love it!

Thanks for that, what an inspirational post already!
Not done reading but I'm on it :)

I had a bit of issues getting back into the work flow after two weeks of little work and focused on real life and my own content. Totally back to focused at work, this will help me get back into it, I'm going to prep a 30 day content list and start creating ahead.

Thanks for the inspiration <3

Awesome, I think it will help me give myself that push to plan ahead and not worry about content .. I have some drafts though, but will not start this challenge until I have at least 10 lined up. Let's see when I can make it happen lol.
