Christmas has arrived and it was a really good build up this year. I love this time of year as everyone can unwind a bit and relax. We decided to travel away for the holiday season as we didn't travel away for a while. Luckily all the snow had melted and the drive was nice and easy.

Christmas starts here on the 24th with fasting until the evening when you would break your fast. This was quite easy to do for me as I was quite full from the previous day anyhow. I broke my fast with the red beetroot soup with mushroom dumplings. Usually these would be with wild mushrooms inside, but they are not so easy on my stomach!

That looks like a fantastic spread, Steve.
My family is Polish, and my mother used to make many of those things for Christmas Eve dinner.

Yes just family over the few days.

The fasting on the 24. is a Catholic tradition that is followed. Although much smaller than the 40 days fasting.

On this day people also do not eat meat when they break the fast, usually eat this Carp fish. (From freshwater lakes).

That food looks delicious. Dumplings are always comforting in the winter, so many varieties, too. I must try some Borscht, it's one of the few things that I'm not sure how it tastes. Pickled herrings and Russian salad have to rank among my favourite foods. We see them in some of the specialty shops.

Thank you, I do like homemade dumplings in the winter and hot soups. There is also a summer version of beetroot soup which is very delicious. I made some notes and may try to make it at some point.

Hi Barb,

The mushroom cabbage was very tasty and filling.

The bowl with white creamy mayoniase on top is the traditional russian salad.

Usually the dumplings with wild mushrooms in it are quite hard on your stomach and dont usually mix well with vodka for me..
