Zesty Citrus Bursts

Nature provides us with an abundant source of Vitamin C at just the right time!

Wintertime means flu season not so, but we all dodged it during lockdowns; wearing masks, avoiding crowds, and sanitizing just about everything in fear of succumbing to the horrid Covid, did not do our immune systems any good.

Refreshing Pomelo Juice

During that awful period when we had a really hard lockdown, I discovered the delicious juice one gets from Pomelos, right in our garden!

20230531_140636.jpg

The tree was planted by my Mom many years ago. She was told it was an Orange, however, when the fruit started ripening, it stayed a lemony colour. An Orange it certainly was not, nor was it a Lemon, nor a Grapefruit, as I discovered when I cut it in half.

It had many pips and uneven segments, so it could not be cut as with Grapefruit. What made me more dubious, was that the fruit was tough, and likely would be useless to us!

I was so wrong; it was filled with tons of delicious juice.

I discovered it was:

  • Not as sweet as an Orange
  • Not as acidic as a Lemon
  • Not as bitter as a Grapefruit

Google Lens told me it was a Pummelo / Pomelo.

We live in a subtropical climate with mild sunny winters.
Half the tree is in shade - the sunny side produces larger fruit, with smaller fruit from the shady side.

I squeezed out 1 large Pomelo, diluted it with water, and tentatively took a sip.
What a pleasant surprise!

The Pomelo juice was really delicious and refreshing, served with fresh mint leaves.

Zesty Orange & Ginger Cooler

I make my own chunky Marmalade with sweet Oranges, but Orange Juice has for long been the drink of choice to build up the immune system.

Adding fresh grated Ginger Root and Orange zest to the squeezed juice gives it an extra zing and added health benefits. Ginger is said to aid digestion, immunity, cardiovascular health, and reduces pain, plus many more health benefits.

I squeezed out the juice of 2 large Oranges and added a thumb-length piece of fresh Ginger root as well as a little Orange zest.

Absolutely yum!

Next time:

I'd like to share some really nice hot drinks that help during the flu season with you next time; a delicious Ginger and Honey tea as well as Golden Milk, made with Coconut Milk, fresh or dried Turmeric root, Ginger root, and a stick of Cinnamon and sweetened with a little Honey, a great warming drink to have in the evening before bed.

For now, we will enjoy the cool Citrus drinks, perfect for a sunny winter's day.

Thank you for the tip Joan! Those juices were really good. I want to try and make a cordial with the Pomelo but will have to add sugar to preserve it, which is ok for me but not for hubby.
The Comrades was so exciting, the Dutchman almost pipped him at the end!
Our one guest ran his first Comrades, but had to stop at 82 kilometres. He could barely walk when they got back, but said he'll be back next year!
Wishing you a wonderful week Joan.

Watching Comrades or part of it I think is a tradition here. I used to second in days before they had tables for support...., found out I had aches and pains back then, this running thing is most addictive to many!

Zesty Pomelo cordial sounds great, do a search you may find a recipe that is sugar free, although squeezed fresh looks best!

Looks lovely and what a boost of vitamin C right there.

The lemon/orange zest trick is surely one of the best. It contains so much of the flavor of the citrus fruits. It works wonders in the drink but also on any food you can think of!

Thank you for sharing this. Keep well and healthy in the winter!

Thanks @fermentedphil, it's the first time I added ginger to orange juice, it was delicious.
I'm with you about the lemon and orange rind, it really adds that extra dimension to sweet as well as savoury dishes!
Have a great week😊

Oh my, this reminded me of carrot and ginger jam. But what great addition would orange not be to that jam as well? Orange, ginger and carrot jam! Might as well try it sometime before the end of orange season.

Great minds think alike! Have a splendid week.

I did not read the community name as Amazing Ducks. That's a lie, I did, and much as I love citrus, I'm kinda disappointed now at the lack of ducks ;D

That's one full tree! You're very lucky. I think it's considered an exotic fruit here, but now I'm curious. I'm gonna find one, and make some juice, as I've been on a bit of a citrus-y crusade myself. Hope you're keeping well! :)

Haha @honeydue, sorry to have disappointed you, why not start your own Amazing Ducks Community? Could be fun, we may even see drinks popping up in the Ducks Community and vice versa ;)
I'm very well thanks, wishing you a wonderful week!

Pomelo sounds very good. I will have to try that sometime if I can find some over here. The orange juice with ginger root sounds very healthy. I do love a cold glass of orange juice in hte morning sometimes. Adding some ginger to it may be something I try in the future. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks @coinjoe, I was a bit dubious about combining ginger and orange, but it was absolutely delicious!

I love pomelo. We also have pinky pomelo in Viet Nam, and we do use it to make salad as well. :)

Sounds like what we would call ruby grapefruit, really delicious. We actually had some recently, the segments are large and I was able to remove the skins. Is it this type?

What a beautiful publication with all those colors and that tree is a blessing.
I love citrus fruits and in this time of heavy rains in my country, it is very smart to consume them in the different options we have at our disposal.
Blessings!
