Tough Times Don't Last

(Edited)

Had I known what this year had in store for me, I likely would have gone into hiding, but as the saying goes:

Tough times don't last
But tough people do

Very very true, and we all have that inner strength, you may not believe it but it is sitting deep inside waiting for you to call on it.

I know it's easy to say that when the tide has turned and life becomes smooth sailing, but the one thing I have learned is that having a support system during tough times, is vital. That is when we realize just how important family, loyal friends, and good neighbours are.

Hubby gave me quite a scare as I shared with you recently, but after having a procedure that saved his life, he is back to his old self, which is a huge relief!
Making excuses and doing a self-diagnosis simply is not worth months of not feeling well when a check-up with our general practitioner had him going straight to the hospital where the 'plumbing' to his heart was sorted out in no time and got him on the path to recovery.
I shudder to think what the outcome could have been!

Christmas holidays

Needless to say with all this going on, I simply was not looking forward to a busy holiday season in our BnB, let alone Christmas and all the hype around it.
My Christmas decorations only went up today, very simple and understated, I'm not even putting up a big Christmas tree.

Cottage entrance and little wooden Christmas tree.

Our studio unit has even fewer decorations as it will only accommodate a single guest, an ex-pat from Canada who is here for quite a while to spend Christmas with his family, so there won't be any children in that unit. This kind of booking is great, as it means less work by not having to strip and change everything, especially as our staff will be on leave to spend the holidays with their families.
This year, however, we will have to find temporary staff on odd days when there are same-day check-ins and check-outs, as hubby, despite his protestations, cannot over-exert himself just yet.

Back to the kitchen

I've been making bread for a while now, but only recently started baking treats again and made an old favourite, Oat & Coconut Crunchies with Sunflower Seeds.

I will be making a spicy brandied fruit mince filling tomorrow so the dried fruit can soak up all the spices and brandy, in readiness for fruit mince pies, something I did not make last year, as another wave of Covid hit our shores, so we had a quiet Christmas, just four of us. Mom was not well, and there simply was no time to bake.

A Special Dinner

Our friends whose home was badly damaged during the floods of April, invited us for a delicious dinner - authentic Durban Indian Lamb Curry and one of my favourite desserts, Soji, that I spoke of recently in my post South African cultures: Part 1 - Spice and Chitter-chatter.

20221209_135300.jpg

We did much chattering that evening.
They are selling their home as is, storm-damaged, as their insurer did not cover their loss in full, and they furthermore cannot face going back there, after that traumatic night when they escaped the massive landslip in the nick of time.
They've made peace with their decision, however, as they were planning on moving to be with their daughter in Ireland, and this will hopefully happen sooner now after the loss of their home.
That is still some time away, as their daughter has only been there for about a year, so needs to be more secure before they can go over.
I'm not looking forward to that day, but as I've learned, seasons come and go, as do friends and family, but we can still keep in touch from afar!

Doughnut Peaches?

My fruits & veggies-on-wheels surprises me with new produce every so often, and these doughnut peaches are a first for me. Shaped like a doughnut with an indentation in the centre, these were fragrant and supersweet, absolutely the best-tasting peaches I've ever had.
Are any of our #hivesouthafrica folk familiar with this fruit?

Summer flowers

The garden is really starting to blossom with all the summer flowers, the bees are bizzily buzzing, which is a good sign as we hardly saw any last summer.

Have a great week further everyone, hope you're taking a break and not getting caught up in all the madness and bizziness of the year-end/ Christmas holidays.

Tough times don't last
But tough people do

🙌 Going to make this my mantra going forward in life!💪

2022 has proven to be quite a challenging year, hasn't it? I don't know one family that isn't having, or already had, some type of health problem or loss this year. Glad your husband's condition was found and treated. Medical matters of the heart are nothing to mess with as I know firsthand on both sides of my family.

I'm glad you're taking time to relax a bit and breathe during Christmas. Your decorations look beautiful and festive.🎄 The colorful doughnut peaches fascinate me. Wish I could taste one!🍑😋

You are one tough cookie! Speaking of cookies, I look forward to seeing the yummy desserts you bake for Christmas and the holidays!

Hugs! @lizelle

Thank you so much @ninahaskin, and for the tipu.
You are so right, a friend and I were talking about the same thing the other day, everybody I speak to has either had serious health issues themselves or lost family/friends, and many are young people. I know of 2 in their 30s who had heart attacks, one sadly passed away and the other is my sister in law's niece who's now waiting for the new year when her medical aid kicks in as she needs a costly procedure. Our public health system is atrocious so one cannot even knock on their door, you'll find yourself knocking on heaven's door if you have to rely on them😒

But thankfully we can still count our blessings as we live in a beautiful country with some really awesome people, have to keep our sense of humour or else we'd go dilly😅

...and, we have an abundance of gorgeous fresh produce like those 'doughnut' peaches, wish you could taste it, it's absolutely divine!

Wishing you and yours a wonderful (Christmas)/holidays🤗

I am so glad to hear that Arthur is doing well, and to hear you so chipper.

Our tree, such as it is, will probably go up on Sunday. If I have time (I have a list as long as your arm for between now and Sat morning) I will be putting ribbon on jars for the Christmas and fishing out decorations for the stall & gazebo... The dining room looks like a tip. My office is full of boxes 🤦🏼‍♀️😍

I am so happy to hear you looking forward to Christmas!

Thank you Fiona, I'm very relieved that he's feeling so much better, explains the constant tiredness, he's back to his old self again, busy doing chores around the house.
Our home is going to look like a warehouse by Christmas day a lot of stuff they've not sold & donated will come to us. They're driving down on Christmas day!! 👀
I hope we see lots of pics of your Christmas market & that your tree goes up otherwise father Christmas won't know he has to drop off some gifts there🎅

Those Oat and Coconut Crunchies look like something even I, who doesn't have much of a sweet tooth, could eat a lot of! For some reason they make me think of the (now prohibitively expensive) Walkers Ginger Biscuits which I used to enjoy with a cup of tea many years back.

How nice that your dear husband is getting better, definitely this year has had several unfavorable episodes, especially what happened in April, it was very sad, but good that you are strong and you get up and move forward, I admire you very much dear Lizelle.

Although you say that your Christmas is simple this year I love every detail in your cabin, especially in the entrance.

Lizelle, I wish you continue spending happy moments with your family and friends, may the next year bring us all many blessings.

Merry Christmas.

Finding ones feet between all the mayhem, good to hear your home will celebrate with a visitor coming in. Neighbours have been through ordeals of their own, support where able, it has been a tough year emotionally all round.

Life carries on, some stay some planning to go we feel lost yet know times have changed each makes plans toward a hopefully better tomorrow.

Take care and great to hear hubby is up and about enjoying tinkering and sorting out, always a great help when both are able to rely on each other.
