The Shed @Pennington North

Asking the question 'What shall we do today?' is a luxury we've not had for a very long while.

We've had to take it easy with hubby's internal 'plumbing' getting fixed, then high drama as he flew through the air and crash-landed on the very same delicate area. All appeared intact, except for a fractured rib, but just a couple of weeks later it turned into a frantic chase to the hospital, as the plumbing started playing up big time!

All's well that ends well, hubby's feeling on top of the world now that it's been fixed, for the second time, and it was time to hit the long and winding road again:)

Many of my friends know that we've fallen in love with the little seaside town of Pennington, and are/were? considering a move down that way, as hubby loves the idea of a house by the sea, big enough to have friends and family stay over, and from where he could go a short stroll down to the beach with his fishing rod over his shoulder.
After all his antics these past few weeks, I'm no longer sure that being away from our support system would be such a good idea.

Nevertheless, that's where we headed, but this time we took a turn to see what was happening on the northern side of town and were very happy that we did.

It was a case of driving, parking, eating, shopping, walking; then driving a little further, getting out, and walking again.

Deli and a delicious Lunch

Our first stop was at The Shed, a deli/cum restaurant that I discovered, thanks to Google maps, and they had very good reviews.

Adapt or Die

It really is so inspiring hearing how business owners had to adapt or die in this new world post-Covid. Many thought things would keep on ticking over as they did before this new C, but soon learned that it not only killed people, it also meant the demise of many businesses!

The owner of The Shed made a smart move by converting his home to accommodate his family-run business. The ground floor now is a little Restaurant cum Deli and the upstairs is their living space, which of course greatly reduced their overheads.

Sculptures

I took a walk through the gardens and saw a couple of lovely wooden sculptures, one really quirky that seemed to be carved into a tree trunk, so there I was, stalking the tree, zooming in closer on foot, and of course, this angry looking face was not part of the tree.

A warthog, and giraffe, both skillfully carved, stand guard at the entrance of the building, while a Heron stood hiding in a little corner of the garden.

Dining on the porch

20230307_120625.jpg

P.S. the owner's beautiful fluffy cat did not trouble us while we are eating, just went over to say hello to new diners.

The menu had some really delicious offerings - hubby went for a bunless burger - a huge homemade patty topped with cheese, crispy bacon, mushrooms, cheese & gherkins, served with crispy fries and onion rings. Of course, he could not manage to eat that in one sitting, so took half of it home in a takeaway container, for Ron, as a friend explained, lateRON ;)

20230307_123431.jpg

A lightly toasted Bagel filled with cream cheese and smoked Trout nearly won me over, but I opted for grilled marinated Chicken Fillets served on sourdough bread and a simple green salad, absolutely delicious!

The Deli

Deli offerings were all very tempting and surprisingly well-priced, unlike many others that inflate their prices to cover large overheads.
Preserves, specialty Meats and smoked Sausages, Cheeses, Biltong & dried Wors, Macadamia Nuts which are grown on the lower Kwazulu Natal South Coast, Preserves, Sourdough Bread with a twist - Garlic & Rosemary or Sun-dried Tomatoes, Spices, Sauces, as well as a small range of spoils for the ladies. I was quite intrigued by the Coffee Body Scrub but prefer having a cup of good coffee, so opted for the medium dark roast Wild Coffee Savannah Blend Beans. I also walked away with Garlic & Rosemary Sourdough Bread, Lemon & Lime Marmalade, as well as a really good egg-free Wasabonnaise.

Walkabout @Pennington North

It was time to drive a little further north and walk off all that food.

Colourful and cheerful graffiti done by Debby and Alan Thompson welcomed us to Pennington beach as we crossed the little bridge leading to the beachfront.

As security is a real factor when making a big move here in SA, this laidback town has no shopping malls, which means no loiterers, plus they have a private security company patrolling day and night that most of the village residents contribute to.
Sadly increasing crime is a reality in SA, but here in this little seaside village, things are a tad safer, although one still sees security fencing in many homes.
This home with views of the Indian Ocean right across the road only has spikes on top of the walls, whereas some homeowners opt for electric fencing, yep, that's life in our beautiful country!
This would be a perfect buy to set up an Airbnb, but do we really want to do that?
Nope, we'll opt for something smaller when we do move from our current home, and REALLY retire, although I will still keep myself busy with Hive blogging and MisThrift on Yaga.

It was time to hit the beach, and there were two fishermen enjoying the ocean breeze and throwing their line into the waters, hoping for a good catch for the pan. Hubby's dream is to have a little house within a stone's throw from the beach.

Hubby fishing over the years - PS that gorgeous Yellowtail was bought, not caught;)

Looking south we saw the old railway bridge with a wooden walkway across the river mouth.

My lengthy #marketfriday post started as a #wednesdaywalk with many disturbances - loadshedding caught me unawares as I did not check our scheduled power outage, and so Wednesday went out the window because it was time for meal prep by the time the electricity was turned on again and we have two young men in our BnB needing dinner - of course, that includes us as well!
Thursday morning brought the dentist visit and the painful and lengthy root-canal treatment, which my very gentle dentist explained was made difficult because the canal narrows as one ages matures.
Hubby was restless so I reluctantly agreed to go on a drive to the Valley of 1000 Hills.
We picked up @artywink and her hubs on the way, with me feeling sorry for myself. Painkillers, the company, and new sights however helped me forget about my misery for a couple of hours. Blogging on Thursday went out the window as my jaw was sore again, so I was off to bed earlier than usual.

Backtrack to Wednesday, @tattoodjay asked: Wednesday Walk How do you like walking alone or with others?

My response to that question is:

It depends on my mood!

If I feel like a natter and a smile, of course, I love having company, which is most of the time by the way. Definitely not where there are crowds though, which is a benefit of being retired, or shall I say semi-retired, as I'm now self-employed and running our BnB.
There is more time to get out and about during the off-peak season, so hubby and I have the luxury of taking time out, on our own, or with friends or family, while the crowds are hard at work.
This of course leaves us with places all by ourselves at times, often bumping into other folks whose locks have either turned silver or are starting to thin out :)

This was on a previous jaunt with @artywink and her man - our two men whose hair is giving away their age ;)
20220303_120340.jpg

I hope you enjoyed walking and shopping with me at The Shed in the little town of Pennington, and that there were some things that made you smile, for @elizacheng's #makemesmile collaboration with @tattoodjay.

Completing and publishing were halted by several factors as I told you, so that's how my blog ended up here in @dswigle's #marketfriday community, as it was a walking, sightseeing, and shopping trip, all in one!
Denise wants to Buy a Lighthouse, and I share this fascination with lighthouses, each one with its own unique character. I just love it!

Good to hear he is well again. Moving away from a support system in place is a difficult choice in any time in your life. Especially when one’s health is acting up.
Something to definitely give a long thought. We moved so many times in the last 6 years. No system left. So we need to start over somewhere. Must say we are a bit younger still 😉

What a beautiful place, it looks precious.
The sculptures are awesome.
The food… delicious.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and beautiful captures with us. Have a wonderful Friday @lizelle 👋🏻😊

Thank you @littlebee4, I can't imagine having to move so many times. Our feet are firmly planted here so I don't think it is going to be easy, but who knows? It may be the best move ever!
I do hope you get to settle down soon and start forming new bonds with people close by, but it will be easier as you're still young.
Thank you for stopping by @littlebee4 🤗

You are welcome 👋🏻😊
I understand. But like you say, you never know and maybe it will be the best move ever.
I know I have moved to much, I am so craving to settle down… but a move is coming up very soon again hahaha 🤣 I am still young but moved close to 50 times, soon country 7 is just toooo much. I’m tired. In every way.
I am working on settling down soon and getting close to it. Our last move didn’t go as planned. But we move on and make the best out of it.
You are welcome, have a wonderful weekend 🌺

That angry face really looks like it’s part of the tree. 😅
I also like to live near the sea. I remembered before I was asked where to live: near the sea or in the mountains but I couldn’t decide what to answer to that question because I love both. 😁

It’s hard to live away from the support system, but hmm, that’s really something to ponder upon, weighing the pros and cons.

Lovely place the Deli is! I like the food, all looks so delicious!

Glad to hear the hubster is doing well and you were able to get away for a bit. I can see why you love Pennington, it looks like a peaceful and wonderful place. I loved seeing the pix of your husband fishing, I am jealous, wish I could be there to cast a line in, I do enjoy fishing very much.

@lizelle, I don't think you could have stuffed any more into that wonderful article, from the tree carvings to the food then shopping, man you are something girlfriend.

Beautiful place truly, what a dream it would be to live so close to the ocean, but I feel the same way about being too far from my support group, I need my children close as well as my friends.

Maybe if things go right, you can just visit more often.

Hope you are managing those blackouts, I think it would drive me crazy.

Have a great weekend.

Hugs!

Thank you for your lovely feedback dear @farm-mom!
I'm very relieved that hubby's himself again🙏
LOL, What started as a little Wednesday Walk blog, ended up as a lengthy mishmash of allsorts😉
You'd love fishing during a Shad run when the fish bite as soon as your line hits the water! There of course are restrictions as people over-fished many years ago, but it's really exciting.
We're fortunate (haha) in that we only have periods of 2 hour blackouts, unlike some areas where they have 4-hour outages at one time, a total of 12 hours in a 24 hour period! That's in Johannesburg, which is the economic hub of SA, a recipe for economic disaster!
But we carry on and make the best of life.
Have a great weekend further my friend💖

You have such a beautiful country, it's a shame things aren't run better over there.
The world is in strange place, not just in SA, it seems it's bad in lots of places around the world.

Blessings my friend.

Wow!! Talk about a full post!! You really are an over-achiever!

I am so glad to hear the hubby is feeling more like himself! I cannot believe everything that has happened to the two of you! Poor you with the tooth! Dental pain is no joke, I would rather have a baby than a sore tooth. Honestly.

What a perfect day for a ride and what a little haven of loveliness you happened upon! That carved face was hauntingly scary! But, I loved him and all the other carvings they had. What a smart move on their part, it must have been a hard decision to do that, but, it looks like it paid off. Even the kitty looks happy about how it all turned out.

Lunch looked divine! Truly! Just one look, that's all it took was just one look. You know how the song goes! That cheeseburger needed no bun. It was heavenly looking! Haha! Ron as in LateRON! LOL That was cute and I had to read it three times before I got it. Pfft. Seriously. The store is so adorable and they have all the things to make a trip fun and festive. That is a place to make on my GPS. :)

The ride to Pennington was marvelous and what a nice place that possible BnB would be. I hope you never do it. That is just too much work for you to be doing now. Unless you have to, there is no way I would take on more responsibility. I am ready to throw the line in for a few shad! If you come here, it is the mackerel that jump on the hooks in pairs! My father loved to fish them with us kids. It made us feel like real fishermen! :) It is so sad to see the world fall further into hell, Lizelle. It pains me to see all the crimes and the hate crime even worse. I am not sure where we went wrong, but, my beautiful country is no longer recognizable to me. I can only hope that in numbers we are stronger. We need to take our world back. XOO

This post was an absolute joy and I know you will make the right decision for both of you. As you know, I have moved every few years (with the job) since I left home. The network/support system is the #1 thing you need to worry about. Right now, I have an older relative out in California who needs surgery. It wasn't bad when people were out there, but, now she is alone as far as help. It pains me to see that and worse, I cannot go there now, so someone else will. I never want you to worry about things like that, although you are an independent cuss. And the place was lovely.

Le sigh. Life never gets easy! Thank you for being part of the challenge! All of them~! LOL It is always fun having you!!! Love to you and many prayers are said for you and your guy!

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world. Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday

Rules of the Road to Join #MarketFriday!

  1. Go to any type of market, or anywhere where you pay money for a service. It can be a museum, a movie theatre, or an auction. Be creative!
  2. Tell us a little bit about the market or the event. What brought you there? What did you buy? How much did it cost? We like to compare prices, otherwise, it is just pictures of a market!
  3. Post the pictures! No out-of-focus ones, please! Tell a little bit about the pictures that you post. Having many pictures to scroll through does not make a better post without an explanation.
  4. Use the MarketFriday Community Platform to post #hive-196308 (this is not required, but appreciated) If you don't, then #MarketFriday should be your first tag
  5. Following me and reblogging the post so more see it would be appreciated !! Not a rule, just appreciated, more vision for more views on your posts!

You are just the sweetest Denise!
Thank you so very much for your thoughtful comments.
I do agree it's time to slow down and forget about setting up a new bnb, and time to slow down, so we're mentally preparing ourselves for the goodbye.
We love the interaction with our guests but Covid and last year's devastating floods in our metro brought about big changes.
A corrupt government means no governance, and it filters right down to the root level. Crime and lack of basic services is destroying our country, but there are communities who are taking the bull by the horns and fixing what they can.
It is time for all of us, all over the world, to say, enough is enough, and become proactive, if we want a better world.
So, back to our next move, you're right, we're both almost ready to throw in the towel, and start taking it easy.
Perhaps all these health scares are signs that we need to make that change sooner rather than later?
Hubby's fall was not good, deep inside me I knew it was going to have consequences, despite him saying he's ok.
Sounds exciting when the Mackerel bite, hubby would love that!
Enjoy your Sunday Denise xxx
