The Loos of Blueberry Cafe

avatar
(Edited)

I’m sure if If I told you we drove one and a half hour to visit a Loo, you would think I’d gone totally bonkers, but that’s exactly what we did yesterday!

We even invited my bestie @artywink and her hubby to join us;)
The loo often is the first place I head for when going on a road trip, but this time it was for a different reason.

We chose the fastest route, along the N3, no, I was not in a pinch; it was getting close to lunchtime.
Urghhh I hear some of you say, lunch in the loo!

Why would I be so keen on visiting a loo?
Well, when looking at the reviews of the Blueberry Cafe in Nottingham Road, along the Midlands Meander in Kwazulu Natal, the bathroom is often mentioned, and the first place all visitors find their way to, as I soon discovered!

The cafe is on a rocky outcrop of a private Angus stud farm called Netherwood Farm. They've now branched out to Ankole-Watusi cows as well.

The wild orchard of blueberries on the farm was the inspiration behind the name of the cafe.

EDIT to my post at this point
I was pleasantly surprised by this VIDEO to learn that Netherwood Farm is owned by the world-renowned heart surgeon, Dr. Kleinloog, who actually performed my hubby's triple bypass surgery way back in 2002, and then recently did a successful heart transplant on a dear friend's son.

A small world indeed!

As usual, I trailed behind, drawn to the cafe’s kitchen garden, and taking in the neverending views of the farmlands and the Drakensberg mountain range way off in the distance.

The Cafe is huge, with many different ‘rooms’ and quaint decor, from vintage to contemporary; and many collector’s items that stopped me dead in my tracks as I meandered through.
It was a weekday, and the main dining area was busy. This place, not surprisingly, buzzes over weekends.

A display of pumpkins greets one on arrival.

I could not find hubby or our friends, but the friendly manager simply said and pointed,

They’ve all gone that way.

To the loo I discovered!

20230502_131355.jpg

So did everyone else who had just arrived, all coming back chuckling and chattering, telling me I had to go into each loo; my curiosity was piqued!

One is reassured again that only the cows can see one.

20230502_131931.jpg

I soon learned why I had to visit each loo, naturally only the ones that were vacant:)
The entire outer wall of each loo was made of glass, offering the best view of the cattle, a couple of Alpacas, some sheep, and birds.
Spectacular views greeted one when seated on the 'throne', and of course, the cows are there as well!

There was a baby changing station, with comfy couches for breastfeeding, while Moms can drink in the stunning serene views of the farmland, the animals with the Drakensberg mountains forming a gorgeous backdrop.

Every little detail has lovingly been added, like the door handles, one, in particular, looking like an eagle.

Quaint copper taps, and the views of course. These loos certainly will not become cell phone booths, as there’s enough going on outside to keep one’s attention.

The cafe is filled with real treasures, stylish comfy seating areas from a more genteel era, modern contemporary seating, quiet areas showing off antique finds, an ancient dentist chair, a beautiful old piano, a huge Dinkie Toy collection, as well as cartoons, something for James Bond fans; all in all, a real feast for the eyes, so take a walk with me. Some areas were not open for diners as it was a week day.

And if you're daring enough and would like to ride with the wind beneath your wings, try and escape with this BMW that's hidden deep inside the cafe.

There are tons of the most delicious treats to buy, but I will share that with the shoppers from #marketfriday, as it would be quite overwhelming trying to fit everything into one blog. As it is, I've likely only shown you half of what there was to see in the Blueberry Cafe.

I'm not going to let you go hungry; the beef is from the farm, and most of the vegetables are grown there as well - Smoked Brisket, Roasted Vegetable Salad with Feta & a Mustard Vinaigrette, and a Beef Curry & Rice.

There is a brewery on Netherwood Farm as well, but we ran out of that precious commodity, time, so chose to take the slow road back home to take in more of the KZN Midlands everchanging landscape; from farmland to pine forests. The road was surprisingly not potholed as we expected.

The scent of pine found its way into the car, a lovely memory to take back home, as well as memories of the gorgeous views from the Loos at Blueberry Cafe!

It's always so refreshing finding places like that, a real tonic @honeydue! We'll be back as we want to see the craft brewery and the cheese farm nearby plus a host of other places.
I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I honestly do not understand South Africa, with all the crime rate and danger etc we hear about all the time, yet there are so many beautiful places and scenery around which you always show. It's like hearing two different people talk about two different places countries. Mind boggling!

Hi @livinguktaiwan, you've hit the nail on the head! This is the enigma of South Africa, we have the most beautiful diverse country, and people who despite our differences still find common ground. I don't think one finds the camaraderie ordinary South Africans have, anywhere else on the world. When we go to places like this, you wonder why you're contemplating emigration.
Back in the city one is brought back to reality. The degradation, poverty and crime, often violent & right on your doorstep, even on your own property, brings you back to reality and you know why so many are leaving.
Greedy and power-hungry politicians are destroying our country, many sowing hatred and trying to cause division.
Our roots are deeply planted here, our son wants us with them eventually, but we think a permanent move will not be good at our age. They're already missing some things, but love the freedom of not having to live in 'prisons' with barbed wire, electric fencing, etc. Having good public transport, etc, unheard of here.
Someone said that once you have Africa in your heart, it's there forever!
I often think of the title of a book by Athol Fugard - Cry the Beloved Country, and feel like crying indeed.
South Africa could be paradise on earth if we had good leaders.
Nelson Mandela's dream has been desecrated by people from his own party,
Sad sad sad indeed. Our beautiful South Africa!

A second reply - I added an edit to my post as I discovered something fascinating in a video on the farm Netherwood. It is actually owned by a world-renowned heart surgeon who performed hubby's triple bypass surgery in 2002, and did a successful heart transplant for a dear friend's son! Small world we live in.

A display of pumpkins greets one on arrival.

Those pumpkins are looking very realistic but i guess those are artificial. Isn't it?

The place is looking good to visit sometimes. Overall the environment there was looking very cool. Among many things the piano and the motorcycle catched my attention mostly.

See the photographs of food I can confidently say the it was good in taste 😅. I just woke up and now I am feeling more hungry to see food here😅.

It is a very special place indeed, we're definitely going back there as we need to see the brewery and other really quaint places along that route.

I loved that old piano as well :)

Thank you for stopping by @intishar.

Sorrry, I forgot to respond about the pumpkins, I believe they are real.
I actually have a massive one that's too beautiful to carve up and it's been sitting on display in my diningroom for months already! I hope the flesh starts drying out so I can keep it forever!

Take me to the loo!!!!

I had to come here after your #MarketFriday post! Who wouldn't want to? I wish I had seen this when it first came out, but, happy I got to see it before it paid out.

I will second the response about the crime vs the beauty. It confounds me as it is such an incredible place, yet, it seems the government is doing its utmost to ruin what they have. They could be incredible, a leader, they have the resources and the people that want to do well, yet enough crime and corruption to take them down.

It is like genocide. Killing off their own. How sad.

I understand having it under your skin, but, I also know that your safety and being with those that you love has to count for something. ❤️

LOVE this post! You make them so fun to visit!
