Subtropical Paradise Hidden Gem - The Lazy Moose

avatar

A spur-of-the-moment decision to take a drive further down the South Coast aka Hibiscus Coast of Kwazulu Natal, led us to a hidden gem.
This was after collecting my renewed driver's license - my second attempt, but I'm not here to talk about that!

As many of my Hive friends know, I've written numerous blogs about the region further down south, and I really could not tell you just how many times we've taken a day trip or a trip to one of the resorts down that way for a couple of days breakaway.

I wanted to experience something new and hubby just wanted to take a slow drive. A quick search on Google Maps pointed me to The Lazy Moose Restaurant & Lodge in the little seaside town of Clansthal. It had over 1000 reviews with an overall rating of 4.6, so I knew we could not go wrong, and we were a mere 10 minutes away by that time.

As we drove in, I immediately could see this was an upmarket establishment, and even though we've been counting our pennies with medical costs etc. etc. after hubby's two health scares and other RL issues, he insisted we park and take the leap; I was so glad we did afterward.

Walking in I immediately spotted the wheelchair and learned that many of the areas are wheelchair friendly. There is a cosy seating area in the spacious reception area; the decor speaks of the ocean.
A Black Marlin, a Dolphin Fish, and a Yellowfin Tuna all adorn the walls.

Nautical collectibles, paintings, as well as sporting memorabilia, can be seen everywhere.

This appears to be a ship's engine order. Does anyone perhaps know if this is correct?

The cricket bat below was signed by the 1999 South African World Cup squad, with nautical memorabilia next to it.

As we walked into the indoor dining area, a massive wall mural of the old man and the sea greets one, with a lighthouse to the right. Next to that is the pizza oven.
We were greeted by a charming front-of-house manager who encouraged us to take a walk around and take photos as well, unlike some other establishments.

The vaulted ceiling is painted to represent a beautiful blue sky with a scattering of clouds. A workman was busy doing some work on the tree in the centre of the dining area, so I couldn't take a photo of the whole tree, which really is a beautiful work of art.

The stunning garden has a Koi pond, and another larger pond with waterbirds appearing every now and then, and can be seen from the outdoor dining area where we chose to sit. Cycads and other indigenous plants plus all kinds of ornamental grasses make up the well-kept gardens, with the ocean and the sound of the waves in the background making it a perfect setting for a laidback lunch.

A really clever ashtray with no chance of ash being blown everywhere!

The Lazy Moose also serves as a wedding venue, and there's a gambling room and a bar on the lower deck, which we didn't get to see as time was running out.

Children are also catered for with a fun play area with stunning wall murals.

Oh, and I almost forgot to tell you about our meal, the reason for our visit!
Hubby chose Hake Thermidor with prawns and a deliciously creamy cheese sauce, and my choice was Butter Chicken Curry served with rice and poppadoms. Both dishes were really good, although mine was way too big a serving; no guessing what I had for dinner tonight;)

Would we go again? Yes, the perfect venue to celebrate a special occasion and have a mini-vacation, even if it's only for the day!
