First Impressions - Dutch Farmer's Market
My very first taste of the diverse and beautiful Netherlands was a farmer's market in the city of Hilversum, a literal taste that was!
Walking out of the Hilversum train station, I was astounded at the number of bicycles parked outside in a parking area but later discovered this was relatively small in comparison to other cities!
These large stone hands are cupped over two dragonflies and is called the Monument of Tolerance, an initiative by friends of Michael Poyé from Huizen who was murdered in an act of senseless violence by right-wing extremists in 1986.
I've been waxing lyrically about the quaint historic and ultra-modern towns and cities, but have not told you about the high-quality fresh produce one finds.
The Netherlands, along with Spain, are the leading exporters of fruit and vegetables in Europe, something I was not aware of.
Another feather in their cap is that the country is the biggest exporter of flowers in the world, thanks to having the perfect climate for flower cultivation and a highly developed horticultural industry to go with it!
I was not surprised to learn about the latter, as there are colourful flowers and berries wherever one walks, despite winter turning up almost overnight.
Flowers spill over balconies, below light poles, on sidewalks, and in every little garden in the towns. One of my favourites is the Holly which currently looks gorgeous, full of red berries.
We walked past some lovely buildings and only popped into a homeware store, Dille & Camille, as the kiddos wanted to buy something, as we were rushing to get to the market on time!
I invite you now to join me on a walk through the farmer's market, it really is not intended to be a photo dump, but everything was just too good not to share!
No Dutch market would be complete without Cheese - rich and creamy, really the best!
Sausages of every kind - smoked meats, schnitzels, and more.
This is a fish lover's paradise - many I am not familiar with.
Baking is one of my hobbies, and I was really impressed with the Dutch baked goods.
Fruits and veggies straight from the market, fresher you cannot find.
I've never seen so many different Mushrooms, these are just some.
Plump Berries - Red Currants, Blackberries, Raspberries and Strawberries.
Super sweet Figs, something that is not freely available in our country, although we used to have a tree in our garden when I grew up in another province.
Vegetables and Herbs - super carrots and red potatoes
I left the best for last - the flowers, simply stunning!
Plants to brighten up the garden.
Our arms were laden with fresh produce, but were drawn into Foodhall MOUT, a vibey restaurant, and enjoyed a late afternoon treat before we headed home.
So, as this market day comes to an end, I want to say how much I miss seeing Denise. Even though #marketfriday may be taking a little breather, I simply had to stop by and share what a typical Dutch farmer's market has to offer. I hope you all enjoyed it!

Wow! That place is certainly laden with the good stuff and my weakness is the cheese, as I love the stuff. Stunning to see so many bicycles and maybe many of us in this country will also have to start riding bicycles, what with the petrol prices skyrocketing.
Take care and enjoy milady.
Blessings to you and the family.

(no space) to get help on Hive. InfoThe cheeses are sooo good, I definitely want to take some home, I especially like the smoked cheese.
It's amazing seeing how the cyclists, cars, trams and buses all ride in the cities weaving in and out, without having an accident, it was quite mind-blowing especially in Amsterdam and The Hague. Some of the cyclists ride with one hand while looking at their phones, some even without holding the handles when on a straight road. One has to be so careful to stay off the bicycle lanes!
Enjoy your weekend my friend.
PS I think I burned Marian's ears the other night😆
Blessings to the two of you.
That place is indeed a cheese dream and a tasting wonderland.
Oh yes, and they live a completely different lifestyle than we do here as you know. If many were to buy bicycles for daily travel here, the road accident numbers would explode. They have to be very familiar with the riding, as they do it every day and the bicycle just becomes another extension of their bodies.
I am glad that you are enjoying all of the sights over there and it really does you a world of good my friend.
Thank you Lady Lizzie and I know that you will also enjoy the weekend.
Ps. No, she likes to talk to you on the phone and I think that it's a female thing !LOL
Blessings also to you guys.

So glad to hear Europe still has a good farmer's market. I used to go to them all the time when I travelled poor, carrying a bag which was essentially my larder. I only ate out once in Europe back then .. a single pizza in Italy. The rest was fresh produce.
Hi @riverflows, I was so impressed with their fresh produce, excellent quality and no lengthy refrigeration. I was thinking of you and a couple of my Hive friends when I saw those mushrooms, some look great but others really weird!
We want to go mushroom hunting in the nature reserve close by as October apparently is the best time of the year for mushrooms. I know nothing about them though, so will only take pics if we find some.
One of my favorite parts about exploring a new city is seeing how floral they are. Nothing like a city full of flowers, is there, my dear? And those are really lovely! It looks like a beautiful place to spend an afternoon.
It is very pretty seeing so many flowers in the cities, something we don't see much of in South African cities. It was really nice walking around there. Have a great weekend @honeydue.
Congratulations, your post has been added to Pinmapple! 🎉🥳🍍
Did you know you have your own profile map?
And every post has their own map too!
Want to have your post on the map too?
I am genuinely loving your posts from Holland and I hope the Dutch tourist association appreciate your efforts. I'm a bit shocked at the price of the bread, though. 5 Euros for 1 ?!!!
Have a wonderful weekend and best wishes to you and your family.
Nice variety of things at the market. Those fresh fruits look so tasty. I notice the baked goods, haha. I had the opportunity to buy some at a farmers market here a few months ago but they were a bit rich for my pocket. They did have some free samples I didn't miss that opportunity.
Small country with so much on offer, cheese, smoked meats like we no longer see, you will have to buy another suitcase for your return journey !LOLZ

Excellent publication.
I think I have never had the chance to see a market like this and it seems to me that in my country there is none. I have tried to mention all the products and it has been impossible because there is an incredible variety that goes from cheese, ham, fish, fruits, breads, groceries and much more.
The other element is the way of telling what it shows. It has been great to read and admire this publication. Happy day. Cheers and greetings.
