Summer Photography 🍉

It’s nice to have summer photos during a really hot summer. However, my area isn’t so hot. Today was only the 5th or 6th time I’ve used the air conditioner this summer. I’ve been hearing cicadas lately. In the evening, I usually don’t need the air conditioner, so I can hear the sounds of the trees through the open windows.

I have a variety of trees on my property, and they’ve grown quite mature. I had to trim some of them yesterday. They provide cool shade on hot summer days. I’m really thankful for them because the air on my property is much cooler than in areas without trees.

Additionally, I’ve left wild plant areas on both sides of my driveway. Having wild areas on the property also helps regulate the temperature.

The chicory flower is such a pretty flower. It symbolizes love, happiness, and truth, and is seen as a sign of positivity in many cultures. I see maybe that’s why I feel cheerful whenever I see them.

Unfortunately, I don’t have chicory on my property. I took this photo when I visited the beach the other day. I love seeing them near the ocean.

This is such an elegant black lily. There are three on the same plant. I discovered them on my property last year, and I’m glad they came back again this year. They’re so beautiful.

I got this big watermelon the other day. In Japan, watermelons of this size cost around $20–40. It’s not very reasonable, but the taste is excellent. In my hometown, watermelons are a very popular crop. There were many watermelon farms when I was in elementary school. I used to see them every day on my way to and from school. But when I visited my hometown recently, I noticed that those farms are no longer there, at least not like before.

In my area in Canada, watermelons are quite affordable, usually $7–8 for this size. Honestly, though, the taste isn’t as good as the ones from my hometown.

I love the colour of watermelon. Its colours give me a feeling of energy. As you can see, this one doesn’t have many black seeds. There’s also a cracked part in it.

I looked into why there are fewer black seeds. Modern watermelons often have fewer seeds due to selective breeding for convenience and ease of eating. Many are seedless varieties, created by crossing different types of plants so they don’t produce mature seeds. You may still see soft white seed traces. Growing conditions and pollination also affect seed development. In the past, traditional watermelons had many black seeds, but now most are bred to have fewer. Hmm... I still like seeing black seeds in the red flesh of a green watermelon.

As for the crack, watermelons can split due to sudden water intake after dry periods, over-ripening, excess fertilizer, or temperature changes. To prevent this, it's important to water evenly, avoid over-fertilizing, and harvest at the right time. I think this watermelon might not have had enough water and nutrients, unfortunately.

Before eating it, I shaped a watermelon emoji. It reminded me of war conditions… I hope everyone has access to food as soon as possible. I feel sad that I can’t deliver this watermelon to the children and people in war zones. I continue to pray for them constantly.

There are twin pink flowers growing near my new stepping stones in the yard. They were so tiny, but powerful. Each of their five petals had a slightly different layout, and they looked so pretty.

夏の写真　🍉

暑い夏にあえて「夏の写真」をアップするのはいいですね。とは言っても、私の住む地域はそこまでの猛暑ではないのですが。今年の夏にエアコンを使用したのは、今日を入れてだいたい５−６回目だと思います。最近、外では蝉の声がしています。夕方は、エアコンを使う必要がないくらい気温が下がります。開け放った窓の外から、木々がサラサラと揺れる音が聞こえてきて心地よいです。

私の住んでいる家の土地にはさまざまな種類の木々が生えていて、どの木も成長しました。夏には心地いい木陰を作ってくれます。この木陰にはかなり助けられています。木のないところと比べると、かなり涼しいのです。

さらに、私道部分の両脇には野草を自由に伸び放題にしている部分を確保しています。この野草があるのとないのとでは、気温がかなり違ってくると思います。

これはチコリーの花です。花言葉は愛情、幸福、そして真実だそうです。チコリーは多くの文化でポジティブの象徴と言われているそうです。どおりで、見かけるたびに元気になるはずです。

残念ながら、家の庭にはチコリーがありません。これは先日海を訪れた時に撮った写真です。海辺で見かけるチコリーの花はいちだんと綺麗です。

これはクロユリです。同じ茎に３つのつぼみがついています。これは突如として二年前くらいから敷地内に咲くようになりました。今年も帰ってきてくれて嬉しいです。とてもきれいですね。

この大きなスイカは先日購入したものです。日本では、このくらいのサイズのスイカはだいたい２千円〜４千円くらいはするのではないかと思います。安くはありませんが、味はいいと思います。私の故郷はスイカの有名な産地です。小学校の時は、そこらじゅうにスイカ畑がありました。学校の登下校時に、地面の上でおいしそうになっているスイカをよく見かけました。ところが、今は故郷に帰っても昔ほどスイカ畑を見かけることが少なくなりました。

今住んでいるカナダの地域では、スイカはかなり安価でおよそ７ドル〜８ドルくらいでこの大きさのスイカを購入することができます。正直にいうと、味は故郷のスイカの方が何倍も美味しいです。

スイカの色っていいですよね。エネルギーをもらえるような気がします。おわかりのように、中には黒い種が少ないですね。ヒビがはいって割れている部分も見えます。

なぜ黒い種が少ないのかを調べてみました。現代のスイカに黒い種が少ないことが多いのは、食べやすさや利便性を重視した品種改良によるものだそうです。多くは「種なしスイカ」と呼ばれる品種で、異なるタイプの植物を交配させることで、成熟した種ができにくいスイカを作っているとのこと。ときどき柔らかい白い種が見られることもあり、栽培環境や受粉の状態も種の発育に影響するのだそうです。昔の伝統的なスイカには黒い種がたくさん入っていましたが、今ではほとんどのスイカが種が少なくなるように育てられているのだそう…。やはり、私は赤い実に黒い種の入ったスイカが好きです。

ひび割れ（裂け目）についてですが、スイカは乾燥した期間の後に急に水を吸収したときや、熟しすぎたとき、肥料の与えすぎ、または気温の急激な変化などが原因で割れてしまうことがあ流のだそうです。これを防ぐには、水やりを均等に行い、肥料を与えすぎず、適切なタイミングで収穫することが大切なんだそう…。このスイカも水分が少なく育ったのでしょうね。栄養も少ないように思います。

食べる前に、絵文字と同じ形に切りました。これを見ると、やはり戦争の状態を思い出さずにいられません…。食べ物が一刻も早く調達されることを願うしかないです。このスイカを戦地の子どもたちや人々に配達してあげることができないのが悲しいです。状況が変わることを日々繰り返し願うしかないと思っています。

これは新しく庭に設置した飛び石の近くに生えていた双子の花です。ものすごく小さな花ですが力強く咲いていました。５つの花びらがありますが、左右の花では微妙に配置が違うのがわかります。かわいらしい花ですね。

夏の写真を撮るのは実に楽しいです。またこうした写真を撮ることができるといいなと思っています。
