“Japanese Lunch Box-Obento and My Mother”

I drew this Japanese lunch box artwork called "Bento (弁当)" or "Obento (お弁当)." In Japan, people prepare Obento for schools, offices, picnics, camping, and for many other situations. It's reasonable and healthy. Additionally, you don't need to rush to go somewhere and buy your lunch. So, you can save your lunchtime. You can make your own Obento, or buy it at supermarkets, convenience stores, and Bento shops, or you can order Obento. Obento contains rice, many vegetables, meat, fish, and more. Usually, people care about the colouration of Obento such as red, green, yellow, white, brown, and more. I love to eat and make Obento very much. I also liked my mother's Obento when I was a school student. She prepared Obento every day for me.

When I was visiting my mother in Japan last summer, I was cleaning my grand parents' rooms and my mother's room with my mother. I found many napkins in my mother's closet. Those were my brother's and mine. We used to wrap our Obento or bring them for school lunch. I asked her why she keeps many of them. She said that she didn't know why but she can't get rid of them because she has too many memories. We talked about our memories together and she decided to get rid of some of them after all. I took photos before we said goodbye to them.

I was thinking about writing that story someday. However, I don't have any Obento photos. Recently, I decided to draw about Obento and created artwork with the photos of napkins which my mother kept for a long time. I added comments on it about what was inside my mother's favourite Obento. I drew one of my favourite Obento this time. I want to draw other Obento someday in the near future. If I make cut-paper artwork of Obento, that would be nice as well I guess!

「日本のお弁当と母の思い出」

お弁当の絵を描きました。日本では学校、会社、ピクニック、キャンプなど色々なシーンにお弁当を持っていきますね。低価格でヘルシーです。それにお弁当を用意しておくと、昼休みにランチを急いで買いに行かなくてよいので時短になります。自作のお弁当でもいいですし、スーパーやコンビニで購入することもできますし、オーダーもできます。たいてい、お弁当を作るときは、赤、緑、黄色、白、茶色などの彩りに気を使います。お弁当は作るのも食べるのも好きです。学生の時に作ってもらった母のお弁当も好きでした。毎日作ってくれました。

去年の夏に日本を訪れた時、祖父母の部屋と母の部屋の掃除を手伝いました。その際、母のクローゼットから私と弟のナプキンを山ほど見つけました。お弁当を包んだり、給食の時に使っていたものです。どうしてこんなにナプキンをとっておいたのか聞いてみると、どうしてとっておいたのか自分でもわからないけれど、想い出がたくさん詰まっているので使わないのに捨てられないとのことでした。その後いろんな思い出話をしてからいくつか不要のものを処分しました。その時その懐かしいナプキンを写真に撮っておくことにしました。

この話をいつか書こうと思っていましたが、お弁当の写真は持っていないので、お弁当の絵を描いて、母が取っておいた例のナプキンを使ってアートを作ろうと考えました。お気に入りのお弁当のおかずは何が入っていたかもアートの中に書くことにしました。今回はお気に入りのお弁当をひとつだけ書いたので、また今度別のお弁当のメニューの絵も書こうと思います。お弁当を切り絵にしても面白いかなと思います。

I loved the small side dishes which were in the small containers. Usually, these are very healthy vegetables, seaweed, or fruits. I also liked the rice balls in the Obento box. I liked this small fish-looking soy sauce container as well.

小さな器に入った小さなおかずが好きでした。たいてい、ヘルシーな野菜、海藻やフルーツが入っていました。お弁当の中に入っているおにぎりも好きでした。この小さな魚の形のしょうゆ入れも好きでした。

These were my brother's and my napkins when we were young. I found them in my mother’s closet. Those were very pretty and I can feel the energy from a long time ago.

これは私と弟が小さかった頃に使っていたナプキンです。母のクローゼットにしまってありました。かわいらしいものばかりで、懐かしいです。

Drawing Obento made me hungry and to make Obento! I loved pretty Obento boxes as well.

お弁当の絵を描いているとお腹がすいてきました。それに、お弁当も作りたくなりました。かわいいお弁当箱もたくさんあっていいですよねー。
