Chestnut season is starting!
"Hey look, the dragonballs are growing again!" is what one of the kids in the street saud as I was walking the dog. And the kid was totally right. The first signs of that the dragonballs had start to open again were there.
Chestnut season is upon us and that means it is the start of official autumn to me!
I was wondering already why in the morning I was seeing deers heading over to the certain spot in the woods and ofcourse running away frightened as I past by. Normally the deer don't come out of the woods that much so it means there is a reason for them to head over there, and most likely that reason is food.
And that is when I saw the chestnuts and their empty shells on the floor there. A good reason to consider not plucking these chestnuts, but leaving them as dinner for the animals in the woods.

Heisse marroni!!!
In winter time you see signs of small stands down the streets selling these smoked chestnuts by woodfire. And they did smell delicious! I had never known that a chestnut would be called 'marroni' in Swiss German but hey ...the Swiss have some more non understable quircks in there ofcourse.
I never really bought them actually, but in winter every now and then you end up with a dish somewhere that has chestnut sauce on it which is truly delicious.
But when you see one those dragonballs hanging, I am not really sure that I would know what to do with it to actually get it to taste good.
And I also would not know if it would be the rigth chestnut for it, as there are multiple families in there and one tastes better than the other. Other chestnut races are more like the sea urchins with even more pins sticking out. We also have those in Holland, and those were the ones that would be a sport to open back int he days when we were all kids.

Magic Marbles
Funny how nature came make all of these little gems and also it is funny that when I was a kid I never really realized that it is something special to have something eatible growing so close by you. Honestly I guess still a lot of Duchies have no idea of that, since more and more people have absolutely no idea where their food comes from, including myself that is!!
But these magic marbles are a funny thing in nature and I am going to keep it that way. No reason for plucking them as we can spot that the deers are eating them.
It feels better to let those furry guys go for them as I like having them as a neighbor.
But it does mean that autumn has started, I don't think I am ready for it!
The chestnuts from the picture are not edible for humans and poisonous for many other animals.
The sweet chestnut or marone looks a little different. But in our forests there are plenty of them. You can take a bag with you and the animals still have enough.

by the way, from the chestnut from the picture you can make detergent.
I just saw now that I wrote perrori in stead of marroni, good one of a slight reminder.
Yes exactly those spikey ones I also remember as the ones you usually see most! But these ones are poisonous? That is interesting, because I do see a lot of the fruits being nibbles on, so something is eating them!
But make detergent? Im intrigued :)
I think wild boars and deer eat these chestnuts. For dogs, however, they can be poisonous.
The detergent is even supposed to work well. I have not tried it yet.

I can vaguely remember chestnuts and conkers from waaaaayyyyyyy back when I was a kid. Thanks for the memory!
No chestnuts where you are living now? Same thing here...I forgot all about them actually!
They're around but rare
The fruit looks good, but if maintenance is not carried out there are pests that will bother. Thank you. Greetings.
Not intending to eat these ones!
Thank you for the information. Greetings.
