My Weekly Grocery at Al Mahirah Traditional Market

Today I went back to visit a traditional market which located not too far from where I live. My goal is to do my weekly grocery shopping, as the stock in my fridge is almost out of stock.

The first location I visited was a place that sells chilies, onions, tomatoes, and the like. Arriving at the location, I immediately asked for a shopping bag and selected the ingredients I needed including red chilies, shallots, garlic, onions, and tomatoes.

After that, I went to the vegetable stall. Personally, the only two vegetables I always buy are sweet mustard greens and spinach. I only spent a short time in the vegetable section, and then moved on to the tofu and tempeh stalls. I also buy these 2 ingredients every week, but because on this occasion I arrived a little late, I only got tempeh and the tofu was already sold out.

After finishing the storefront, I then crossed over to the building right next to the first building, where I bought a chicken. The chicken weighed about 2 kilograms and I asked the seller to cut it into 12 pieces. After that, I returned to the first building and bought some seasoning for the chicken.

After shopping, I went straight back home and then did food preparation with the ingredients that I had bought earlier. This took quite a lot of time, which I spent almost 2 hours doing, from washing the vegetables, picking the stalks on the chilies, skinning the shallots, and boiling the chicken. Although it took a long time, it didn't take much of my energy and I enjoyed doing it. That's all for this Market Friday, and I'll see you next week.

FOOD PREPARATION

Once everything was done, I stored the ingredients in the fridge with their respective containers to keep them fresh for the week ahead. For the braised chicken, I divided it into 2 kinds of preparations: the one that was braised using spices and the one that was braised only with garlic, lemongrass, and galangal. I also cooled it down for about 15 minutes before putting it in the fridge. That's all for this Market Friday, and see you next week.

The colors of the produce are popping, which makes the freshness of the ingredients come through the screen.

What (phone) camera are u using?

Oh and the braised chicken sounds interesting and I'm wondering what your recipe is for those two different takes on the braised chicken.

Hi! Thank you for your compliment and the question as well.

I'm using iPhone XR, but all these pictures have been processed in Adobe Lightroom
(I usually mention this at the end of my post, but this time I forget it😅)

About the spices that I used to braise the chicken,
The first one whose color is yellowish, I bought it at the market, but some of the ingredients that I can identify are grated coconut, turmeric, ginger, shallots, and garlic.
The second one which doesn't have any change of colors was braised only using 2 lemongrass stalks, 5 garlic cloves, and a little galangal plus half a spoonful of salt. The advantage of this second method is that the boiled water can be used as stock and used for additional flavoring in other dishes.

Sorry for this late reply, It's been quite a busy week 😅

Ah... That is indeed a good option to find another purpose for the water.
