Thai street noodle

DSCF2706.jpg

Shot with Fuji X-T4

I got hungry that one night after walking 4km or something, and I wanted to try some street foods. We were staying in Ratchathewi area and outside the hotel right below the BTS station there were some street vendors. There were socks, fruits like mangoes and papayas (ready to eat), pad thais, and this one noodle stall. I was craving for noodles at that time so I decided to try it.

DSCF2709.jpg

I didn't take a pic of the whole stall so you'll see the sign as well (cos I'm an idiot) but they're in Thai so I couldn't read it. All I know it's pork and noodles. XD

As far as I can tell there were 3 food in the menu but I just asked "how much" to the guy cooking and he just assumed it was the noodles and thankfully he got it right. It was 60 baht ($1.70).

I didn't know if I should just wait there or sit at the tables (there were like 4 tables) and wait to be served. I just stood there while waiting for the food until another guy took the food to the table and told me it was mine lol. I didn't see there was a server so I thought it was all self service.

DSCF2711.jpg

Looks tasty! Cheap as well. I usually have water ready beside me or some soda but I was too shy to ask since I don't know if they'll be able to understand me lol. Anyway...

When I tasted it, it was weird. :<
Like, it was savory but too sweet for my liking. It also has a weird aftertaste like a lime (?) I don't know, I don't know how to explain the taste. Maybe it's the veggies that's making it taste like that but I was surprised by how much "new" it was to me even though it's just pork.

I was expecting something salty, kinda like a "bulalo" beef stew and definitely no sweet taste at all but I was wrong. The sweetness and the aftertaste made me feel like I'm gonna puke anytime soon if I eat too much lol.

DSCF2714.jpg

They have these at the table which I assume were MSG, peanuts, vinegar, and fish sauce. I was just adding a lot of fish sauce to the soup but didn't really help much. I'd probably enjoy it if I was in a sweet mood but I wanted something salty probably that's why I didn't like it.

We Filipinos love sweet recipes as well but in my observation Thai recipe likes to make their pork sweet. :D and they grill or fry it.

I wasn't able to finish it cos it was also too much for me. Overall, I'm glad I was able to taste and experience it. I think if I'm used to this taste I will like it especially the noodle quality was good. I can imagine coming here after drinking some beer at Cocowalk which was just right across the street. :D

Maybe they used Star Anise or some other spice. I have tried a similar noodle soup, and I was also weirded out by the unique taste. I don't like my soup tasting anything close to sweet. I do think it's an acquired taste, but I don't think I'll get used to it.

I don't think I have tried anything with star anise but it could be that. Me neither, sweet soup is just weird haha. I thinj I have tried a hint of sweetness in some Chinese soups but not as sweet as this. Plus the pork was also coated with sweetness so really weird for me.

This food looks great. I always enjoy when I eat in thai restaurants. There a lot of choices in Hong Kong. I like the strong spicy. It reminds me my Mexican spicy flavour.
Thank you for sharing!

Same! Although I need to get used to the spiciness first otherwise I'd have to request to make it less spicy😓

Well, you are able to enjoy spicy, even if it’s not the maximum spicy you can if reduced it. À fried of mine, from El Salvador, is unable yo eat spicy, his throat get closed and can’t badly have respiration.
He asked me how i did… well, we eat chilli since the age of 5 years in my town…
Thank you for sharing your experience @hiddenblade

I just don't know if they'll get offended if I ask for less spicy, as some cultures might say "this is the recipe! If you can't eat spicy then don't eat!" or maybe I'm just ovethinking. 😆

Damn I guess that's an allergic reaction? Too bad for him can't eat any spicy foods, they're good sometimes

How much? I'm a tight arse, but happy to live on the outskirts where that noodle soup is 40 Baht lol The white stuff in the jar ought to be sugar so the whole taste can adjusted in any direction! They sneak the MSG in when you're not looking ;-)
Its great to be seeing your posts as I love to read other peoples perspectives and experiences as a foreigner here!

Hope you both had a wonderful time again :-)

PS That first picture is absolutely sublime. The colours and composition are stunning !

PPS Look at your last picture. You get the water from that red bucket which will also have ice in and the cups are usually metal and there should be some straws lying around!

Yeeeess I got so lucky with this shot as I really wasn't trying to be "hey I'm gonna take a pic of you" but more like a pretending to look at my cam trying to figure something out then boom shot taken. 🤣 I didn’t know how to ask permission in Thai hahaha so I just pretended nothing happened.

I saw others getting their water there too but I don’t trust tap water as I’ve never drank from tap in a long time and too shy to get somethingg there lol

Yeah I bet they’re cheaper and less pollutiony on the outskirts hahah. Not sure about the sugar but if it is then bruh it’s already sweet enough? But I guess depends on someone’s taste. 🤣 I also just learned the laugh in Thai is 5555555555😆

Upon closer look, I do think now that it's sugar. Why would anyone want more sugar tho😩

I love those noodle and always order extra crispy pork haha. I think they call those Bamee but to add crispy pork, I always ask my friend to order it. It's so weird to me that they come with sugar too.

I was told it can be bamee kiao where, as wiki says, bami is wheat noodles and kiao are dumplings. (For me, this is new information, wheat noodles in Thailand??)

For example, this https://th.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%B9%84%E0%B8%9F%E0%B8%A5%E0%B9%8C:Bami_mu_daeng_kiao.JPG is bami mu daeng kiao kung - wheat noodles with red (grilled) pork and shrimp dumplings.

Yeah it looks like that could be it. But was wondering what contributes to the weird taste haha

I love trying new street food when I travel, but I know it can be hit or miss. It sounds like you had a bit of an adventure with this dish! I'm glad you were able to try it and experience something new, even if it wasn't your favorite.

I'm curious, what is bulalo? It sounds delicious!

Agree. Bulalo is a Filipino beef soup mainly focusing on the bone marrow and it's more of a salty or garlicky flavor. Never sweet haha. It's so gooood

It always had something to do with BTS. Grrrrrrrrrrr, also Yesss fellow SEA cuisine.

UwU would love to try me some thai noodles in the future.

Also for the condiments, even thought its unhealthy i wish they would add some crushed chicharon so i can add some crunchyness to the noodles.

Pad thais are just <3333

Hmm thinking about your idea, the chicharon container must be air tight sealed, otherwise it’s not gonna be crunchy anymore after a few hours

UwU i wanna eat pad thais noww!

Also yesss it needs to be sealed. That's why the noodle shops that has all the ingredients already prepared and just add hot water. Has soggy chicharon and stale vegetables because they have been out all afternoon. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr
