My Indonesian Food Taste-Test at YZ Ayam Penyet

I’ve been indulging in Chinese food lately, so I decided to switch things up for lunch today. The hawker food center always offers so many choices that it can be overwhelming. Sometimes, it feels like I’ve tried almost every type of food there, but one thing I rarely have is Indonesian food. Maybe it’s because there aren’t many Indonesian food stalls around.

Indonesian cuisine is known for its deep, complex flavors, and that’s something I’ve been missing. Today, I had the pleasure of trying out YZ Ayam Penyet, a stall that specializes in Ayam Penyet. This dish features fried chicken that’s pounded and served with a delicious chili paste. I asked the owner to set aside the chili paste since, while I love its flavor, I just can’t handle food that’s too spicy.

I remember trying this dish once with the chili paste, and it was fantastic, but it was way too hot for me to finish. I often marvel at people who can handle super spicy food, sometimes I think their taste buds must be made of steel!

I know my limits when it comes to spice, but even a little heat from the chili can be intense. Indonesian chili paste is known for being among the spiciest, so I tread carefully.

The presentation at YZ Ayam Penyet really shows their passion. They don’t just throw the items on the plate haphazardly; instead, they arrange everything thoughtfully, making it look both appealing and inviting. The chicken was perfectly fried, and the tofu was great too. Plus, I got a small bowl of complimentary soup, which was a nice touch.

Overall, it was a refreshing change, and I’m glad I took the chance to try something different!

Looks really nice! Interesting to see french fries as side dish. The key to a nice ayam penyet is the chilli!

I think so too but the fries are fresh and a bit crunchy so I still ate it together with the rice :D
