Dumpling noodle with bread, a lunch experience at Serangoon Garden.

During lunch, I rarely eat noodle dishes because I feel like it will not be enough to keep me for an afternoon until evening without feeling hungry. Maybe because I’ve been eating rice for so long that I’m used to it. It could also be that a bowl of rice has more calories than a handful of noodles. I’m not sure how much difference they have but each of these ingredients will certainly have a difference when it comes to my satisfaction level.

So, whenever I have a plate of noodles for lunch, I will also order another side dish or bread that will go with it.

On this lunch, I went to Serangoon Garden to try the Dumpling Noodle dish. I chose the dry version which is priced at S$4.50 which is considered an affordable price for a meal. Nowadays, I would spend an average of S$6 per meal even in hawkers that are along the outskirts of the city. The prices have gone up ever since the pandemic happened a few years ago but I guess we are used to it by now.

Dumpling Noodles

I ordered my food from Hong Sha Li’s Serangoon Garden Carrot Cake and Wanton Noodle. The name of the dish is Dumpling Noodles Dry version.

The type of noodle that I chose is the Mee Kia which is the round and slender type. By default, they will serve you with Mee Pok which is the flat and curly type.

It’s a simple dish that consists of noodles, dumplings, and vegetables. The one that makes it special is the dumpling.

It’s a Teochew-style dumpling that is filled with pork, mushroom, and other vegetables as well. I like the skin of the dumpling because of the smooth and soft texture of it. It’s pleasant to eat and the seasoning in the filling is well balanced too.

Based on what Was written on their signage, it looks like that this hawker stall is a family business. The recipe has been passed down to the younger generation of the family. The one who took my order is the grandson of the original hawker so that’s awesome! I like supporting businesses like this that continue the hawker tradition.

Iced Lemon tea

I think I said on many occasions already that one of my favorite hawker-style drinks is the Iced Lemon Tea. And one of my favorite places to get it is the Serangoon Garden drinks stall. I like it because they will freshly brew the tea and squeeze a quarter of a lemon and then a tiny bit of sweetener. This is the proper iced lemon tea, unlike the ones that simply use the premix powdered version.

Butter Sugar and Kaya bread

This feels embarrassing to mention in my post but I ate 2 pieces of bread right after this meal. I ate a lot during this lunch because I didn’t think that a simple noodle dish would fully satisfy my food cravings.

So that’s it for this lunch food journey. I ate so much carbohydrates and less protein but it was a fun lunch experience without considering the guilt afterwards 😅. This is the kind of lunch that should only happen once a week or else I’m gonna have a hard time burning those calories out of my system.

See you on my next food trip!

My journey to the world of food.
