Garlic Rising | 2023 Spring Gardening
Spring has not officially hit us yet in Florida, but it already feels like spring. The old naked tree branches are creating new leaves; the lizards and squirrels are out searching for food and new life forms as the days go on.
In my modest container garden, the garlic has risen. All five of the garlic cloves that I've planted have sprouted. In this tight little container, it's unlikely they will grow massively. If I am successful this season, in the next season, I will give them more space.
Since planting, I've been learning more about garlic. Although it has many medicinal properties, my focus has been on the plant's life cycle. Understanding how the plant grows and reproduces is my focus. Honestly, I find garlic odd compared to other plants I've grown. Any kind of bulbing plant is much different than peppers and tomatoes.
Asexual reproduction is something I'm well aware of, but what I'm learning about garlic is different than what I've learned; Learning about identical genetic gloves to bulbils and learning how true garlic seeds are not always viable, it's something very new to me. I've only begun my research on this plant that has been cultivated for millenniums, but I'm excited to continue.
