Food Porn

It's not every day that I do a food porn post, but today it is the day to post some food photos.

Last week we had some family events and celebrated four birthdays on Sunday. It was a splendid autumn day, or I should say a hot late summer day, perfect for a trip to our favorite restaurant to meet the other part of the family.

Don't expect magazine quality food photos as I could not put everyone on hold, till I take 25 photos from each angle, so I did my best. The reason I want to share these photos is to show you some traditional food of Transylvania.

The place is to dream of. It is situated on the top of a small hill, surrounded by greenery, fresh air and a lot of sun, when the weather is good, like it was on Sunday.

The building is exquisite in my eyes, it reminds you of traditional Bavarian houses and it is rustic enough to make you want to go back every occasion you have. There's a huge parking lot, which is a nice plus when looking for venues.

The interior matches the rustic exterior style. Unlike what you get abroad in so many places, they have tablecloth and the furniture is made of wood, with Hungarian folk motifs.

Even the napkins have Hungarian motifs printed on them. Anyway, let us see the dishes.

Some of the guests started their lunch with a coffee. I had to take a photo of one as I've never had such coffee. It looks great, I bet it tasted just as lovely as it looked, but as it's been 8 years two weeks ago, that I quit drinking coffee, this was out of the question for me.

Instead I opted for a Hugo, which is one of my favorites.

This was a creamy vegetable soup with croutons. I'm not really a fan of these creamy soups, rather prefer the ingredients in their natural shaped in the soup, but I was told it was good.

This is the famous traditional Transylvanian vegetable soup with pork. A delicious soup and definitely one to taste if you're not familiar with it.

This soup is called "peasant vegetable soup with beef". It's one of the traditional soups and has several versions, like with pork and chicken. It's a good one, if you like vegetable soups.

Chicken soup is among the most famous in the country, but they cook and serve it differently in any restaurant. I think I've never had chicken soup at the restaurant because I can cook it at home, but I was told this is exceptional. It is served with noodles and carrots, exactly how I serve mine at home. Maybe net time I will try it, but you'll see which soup beats it every time at this restaurant.

This is what wins for me every time. It is a venison ragout soup that I love ans it was really good.

This dish knocks your calorie intake off for 2 days, I can assure you. it is Oven baked smoked pork legs with sauteed beans, stak potatoes and horseradish sauce. The whole dish is 4320 kcal. The person who ordered it, could only eat half and the other half he took home packed.

This was mine and even though I've been looking forward to it, it disappointed me. Breaded fish with potato. Should have been good but it was too greasy for my taste. The salad and the sauce was great though.

Rooster testicles stew with polenta. Don't ask :)

Duck thighs with red cabbage with red vine and crushed potatoes with onion. I had this dish last year and can recommend it to you. It's really delicious and should have ordered this instead of the fish.

Lamb legs with tarragon sauce, oven baked potatoes and grilled vegetables. This dish is on my list, but most likely I'd take half home as it's too much for me. The presentation is really authentic, rustic if you like. Maybe one day I'll be brave enough and order some.

Pork chops, crushed potatoes and brown sauce. I'd love to have this dish now, and I'm placing it on my list.

Brownie with ice cream? Anyone?

Or ice cream with chocolate and extra cream?

... aaand this is the cherry on the cake, or this is the cake itself? 😆

Ok, jokes aside, this is not just a cake. It is the famous Esterházy torte.

Esterházy torta is a Hungarian cake (torte) named after Prince Paul III Anton Esterházy de Galántha (1786–1866), a member of the Esterházy dynasty and diplomat of the Austrian Empire. It was invented by Budapest confectioners in the late 19th century and soon became one of the most famous cakes in the lands of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.

Esterházy torta consists of buttercream spiced with cognac or vanilla, sandwiched between four and five layers of almond meringue (macaron) dough. The torte is iced with a fondant glaze and decorated with a characteristic chocolate striped pattern. There are, however, many different recipe variations. In Hungary, the original almonds have been entirely replaced by walnuts.

It is not a light dessert, has character and definitely one to taste if you have the chance. I love it.

Ok, now I'm so hungry I could eat the whole fridge and I bet I'm going to get some angry comments for making people hungry, so I'm stopping here.
