Spring and Grönsakskaka

The weather across the US these past few months has been the strangest I’ve ever experienced in my life. Here in Minnesota, since late February, we’ve oscillated between well below freezing and spring-like temperatures. Sometimes it feels a bit like we’re experiencing three seasons in one week.

Usually the heaviest of winter coats are moved to storage by mid-March but not this year. I’ve said it before—living through the incredibly harsh Minnesota winters makes you appreciate spring so deeply that words can barely describe it.

Looking at the ten day forecast, it appears spring has finally arrived here in the upper midwest for good. I took a three mile walk through the woods yesterday and was treated to the glorious sight and fragrance of crab apple trees in full bloom.

I thought this picture did a good job of encapsulating the renewal of the spring season—a sapling growing under the shelter of its ancestor, a hollowed out tree stump.

Speaking of Spring…

iNaturalist.jpg

I’ve found this incredible app called iNaturalist and have been using it quite a bit lately during my daily walks through the woods. The app allows you to upload photos of flora and fauna and then it tells you exactly what species it is and lots of facts about them. I’ve learned a tremendous amount about how ecologically diverse this area we live in is since uploading photos into the app. This would be especially fun for children and a good way to get them interested in and connected with nature.

This app is like catnip for the insatiably curious. Strangely, my life feels more complete after learning there's actually a bird called the Brown Creeper.

Grönsakskaka

Ikea.jpg

Although I can’t speak the language, grönsakskaka must mean “freaking delicious” in Swedish. The next time you’re in an IKEA do yourself a huge favor and pick up a box of these in the frozen foods section. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed. If you are, I might be a little disappointed in you. : )

These little potato cakes have a way of making you feel as if the clouds are parting and legions of angels are singing. I wouldn't be surprised if quite few Swedes survive winter with their sanity intact solely because of grönsakskaka.

They Don’t Make Things Like They Used To

Shoes.jpg

I bought this pair of Altra running shoes a little less than a year ago for the Four Days Marches event in The Netherlands.

It ended up being a touch of kismet that I wasn’t able to attend the event this year because my feet would have been shredded. Look at the state of these shoes! I’ve never seen an athletic shoe disintegrate quite to the extent of these and this is only from walks on an indoor treadmill.

These weren’t what I would consider cheap shoes either. At the risk of sounding like a geezer—they don’t make things like they used to. I have a fresh pair of New Balance shoes out for delivery today. We’ll see if they hold up any better.

All for now. Thanks so much for reading.

Get yourself a pair of Brooks! Every single pair I owned has been really solid, can definitely take 15k steps per day for years.
Potato, vegetable and cheese sounds like a winning combo to me, though I have not been to Ikea in years... My wife is not into paying for furniture, we have some decades old comfortable furniture in our main home and for our vacation homes we bought them with furniture in them. The last one had over 100K worth of furniture (Which I have not ever paid 20K+ for a single couch before). We got it thrown in for free so I didn't complain :)

Three brands came up consistently as the best as I was doing my research—Brooks, New Balance, and Hoka. I don't have any experience with any of them so I went with the cheapest option. I'll try Brooks after these New Balance wear out. If they're lasting years they'll definitely be worth paying a bit more.

Yeah man! You could pair pretty much any protein with these potato cakes and have an instant meal.

$100k of furniture! Wow. I can't believe how expensive even disposable things are now. We paid $5k for a couch and chair when we moved into our last condo in 2018 and it was all broken down and worn out by the time we moved in here in the autumn of 2024. I was astounded by how much more furniture costs now but it's less expensive to buy quality in the long run. That was a huge bonus for you to get all that thrown into the deal.

Yeah, not having to deliver a bunch of furniture to the island was a huge deal. And it was fully furnished from https://www.roche-bobois.com and similar high end brands, some of which I never even heard of before LOL.

Wow, those prices give me anxiety! Lol. We looked at a furniture store when we were shopping for this house that sold Herman Miller pieces. There were no prices on anything in the store—of course. I sat down in what was probably one of the most comfortable chairs I've ever experienced and the salesman rushed over and exchanged pleasantries. I asked how much it was and that single chair was over $5k. It wasn't THAT comfortable. Lol.

I've heard really good things about Brooks shoes, but they are pretty expensive from what I have seen. My wife and I did a fair bit of walking ourselves this past weekend. I'll be posting a bit more about it in the future. I know what you mean about the weather though, it has been pretty crazy. We have a warm day today then another temperature drop again.

I noticed Brooks were running $50-$75 more than comparable brands too. My wife swears by Hoka. She has a tough time finding shoes that work for her but these seem to be her brand. Very nice! It always makes you feel better to get out and move, especially after we've been cooped up all winter. This looks like our last decently warm day for a while too. I remember plenty of warm springs and cold springs but never in my life do I ever remember this kind of inconsistency.

My wife got some Hoka's a while ago and I think they fell apart on her. More quickly than she expected anyway. It's funny how different the styles and brands can be.

That's too bad! I think people, runners especially, have been conditioned to replace their shoes every six months or so. I think a shoe in the $150 range should last years not months. You're right, even styles can differ a lot within the same brand. I've been wearing my New Balance now for a couple of days and, honestly, they aren't great. I'll probably try the Brooks the next time around.

It's funny how New Balance used to be what all the old people wear and then suddenly the athletes have them and Sketchers are the new old people shoes. I have heard good things about Clark's, but their styles leave a lot to be desired for me. I don't know if I mentioned it but I recently bought some waterproof hiking shoes from Nortiv 8, but I haven't had a chance to really try them out yet. If I like them I will probably buy some hiking boots from there for more ankle support.

Haha, I told me wife I was practicing to be a geezer when I unboxed these shoes. They remind me of shoes you'd see an 70 year old man wear with white socks and shorts in Florida. I used to like Clark's but don't anymore. I remember you mentioning the brand in a previous comment. I've never heard of the Nortiv 8 brand but will have to look for them. The last time we were hiking in Sedona I decided to try some of the barefoot hiking shoes from Merrell and they ended up beating up my feet pretty badly. I'll definitely be going with a traditional hiking boot the next time.

I'm not sure the quality on Nortiv8, but I see they just won an award for something. I don't remember what it was now.

The arrival of spring, especially after a challenging winter, must be rewarding. We still have cold and rainy weather since the start of May.

Yes, it's truly like a rebirth when you can finally feel the sun on your skin!

Those pictures capture spring so we'll! Makes me miss it a little...

That app is a great hint, I'm walking around a lot these days, taking many pictures. Would be great to know what it is that I'm seeing. Thank you!

The advertising you do for those Swedish pastries is like asking for a few boxes to be given to you. Even I want to try them!!! And indeed: those shoes look as if you had participated in several marathons and had walked through half the desert. Ah, how nice that spring has arrived and the weather has improved. Just seeing those images makes the soul happy. A hug

Lol, they deserve accolades. They're so good! It'd be dangerous to have them given to me though. I'd probably gain about 100lbs! I've never seen shoes disintegrate like that. Hopefully the new ones hold up a little better. Spring is so amazing here! I just wish it would last longer. It'll be boiling hot and humid in a few weeks now until this fall when the temps plunge below freezing again. This is the land of extremes! : )

Crab apple blossoms in person are even more intoxicating than the app suggests.
