Every time I visit the hospital to see someone, I usually take a walk around the neighborhood afterward. Everyone knows that hospital food is healthier, but honestly, it’s not very tasty. On the other hand, areas around hospitals are often packed with all kinds of food options. They’re diverse, affordable, and not just there to serve local residents. They’re also a great way for patients to treat themselves once in a while.

This northern-style dumpling place has managed to stay popular in the Shipai area for many years, and behind it is a story shaped by history. It’s said that the first owner was a veteran originally from Northeast China who came to Taiwan during a turbulent time. To cope with his deep homesickness and make a living, he decided to recreate the flavors he remembered so well. Relying on memory and experience, he brought those familiar northern dishes back to life. What started as cooking to ease his own longing for home unexpectedly won over the taste buds of nearby residents and turned the shop into a well-known local favorite.

The interior isn’t modern or fancy, but it’s clean and well kept. Menus and handwritten notes are posted on the walls, giving the place an old-school yet welcoming feel. During Lunar New Year, the shop is decorated with festive ornaments, and the owner even helps sell handwritten spring couplets for fellow veterans. These couplets aren’t just products. They feel more like a way of sharing emotions and memories. This time, I ordered a noodle dish, and what stood out the most was the handmade noodles. They were wonderfully chewy and springy, never mushy or sticky. Every bite showed the care that goes into making them. This kind of noodle is really the foundation of the restaurant. The portion size also reflected that bold, generous northern style. You can feel the sincerity as soon as the bowl hits the table.

Of course, dumplings are another signature item here. I noticed that almost every table nearby had an order of dumplings. The classic combo is dumplings with a bowl of hot and sour soup—simple, comforting, and warming both the stomach and the heart. Many regulars come in like clockwork, casually chatting with the staff as if they were old friends. That kind of interaction adds a strong sense of human warmth to the place and shows how, over the years, the restaurant has quietly built up its solid reputation.
