It had been quite a while since I last went to a convenience store to look for something to eat. That day, I suddenly felt like going again; well, to be honest, it was more because I was feeling lazy. I didn’t want to walk too far just to find a meal, so I headed to the convenience store near my home.

Then I spotted an interesting item called “Garlic Pork Rice with Lots of Garlic”. That name immediately made me curious—is there really that much garlic? Based on what I know about convenience store meals, probably not. Still, I realized I hadn’t eaten grilled pork rice for quite a while, so I decided to give it a try.

After heating it up and opening the lid, the garlic aroma was actually pretty noticeable. The pork slices had that direct-fire grilled flavor, and the meat was juicy just as I hoped. One bite in, the salty seasoning and garlic flavor layered together nicely. Honestly, it wasn’t bad at all. I finished it in just a few bites, almost without thinking, and when I was done, I still felt like I could eat a little more.

Then it suddenly reminded me of a very similar pork rice meal I had bought from a convenience store years ago. If I remember correctly, it only cost NT$69 back then. Even though it was just a microwave meal, the contents were surprisingly decent. Besides the grilled pork, it also came with an egg and some kimchi. The kimchi was especially good—mixing it with rice and pork made every bite extra appetizing, with that spicy and tangy flavor making the whole meal feel more complete. Somehow, that product quietly disappeared from the shelves over time.

Now looking at this new version, it really does seem strangely familiar. It makes me wonder if this is actually just the old pork rice meal brought back in a smaller portion and sold at a higher price. Damn inflation. Convenience stores probably have no choice but to survive by adjusting prices, portions, and packaging little by little, while customers like us can only accept it in the end.

Sigh... maybe I’m overthinking it. After all, it’s just a pork rice lunch box, but somehow, even a simple convenience store meal can make people start comparing memories with reality.
