Indonesian Dinner with Family - A Foodie Review
Hello, friends especially foodies!
Last Sunday, I still needed to present at the workshop in my company’s main building. Lucky just right in front of the building, there was a popular shopping center for us to go and had some dinner. This time I was not alone because my family came to pick me up and they were waiting so patiently because my off time was extended and they were waiting for some hours for me (so sorry for that), before they were waiting in a coffee shop but then I was with them and it had already been dinner time, so we decided to go to a restaurant, a popular restaurant that was my mom’s favorite Indonesian restaurant.
This restaurant named Kafe Betawi. Betawi is the name for the tribe that came originally from Jakarta, our city. Like the name, they had this city’s authentic dishes as their specialization.
When we came there, still not many customers which was great. But they came right away when we were there, like I told you this restaurant was popular among customers here. This restaurant had the perfect style of Indonesian retro touch, it had batik floor, with gold touch color on the furnish. Like usually their dining area was clean and neat.
For the food, they had some soup dishes like rawon (black beef soup), pindang bandeng (milk fish in sweet soy soup), noodle soto, betawi soto, chicken soto, ketupat sayur (rice cake and vegetable in coconut milk), garang asem soup (sweet and sour beef soup), lontong cap gomeh, betawi laksa, oxtail soup, and chicken curry. They also had village fried rice, oxtail fried rice, lamb fried rice, street style fried noodle, stink bean fried rice, and chicken fried rice. They also had special combo which already included bottle tea, with the choice of smashed chicken or chicken soto. They had lamb satay, chicken satay, fried noodle, water spinach noodle and fried vermicelli. And they also had some rice menus such as uduk rice presto chicken, presto chicken sour veggie soup with rice, complete ulam rice, yellow chicken rames rice, and uduk rice yellow chicken.
They still had beef semur uduk rice, rendang rames rice, timbel rice empal sour veggie soup, uduk rice with empal, and uduk rice with rendang. Also they had new vegetarian menu, in their fried rice and fried noodle. They had traditional snacks too, such as gejrot tofu, meatballs, roasted banana, toast, garlic cassava, mendoan tempeh/tofu, batagor, pempek, rangi cake, and fried banana. And they had some food with peanut paste such as tofu egg, ketoprak, squid salad (rujak juhi), gado-gado, betawi asinan, uleg rujak, beubek rujak, and spicy pickled fresh fruits.
These are the menu we chose one by one.
Betawi Laksa
With coconut based soup, this betawi laksa had authentic spices and tasted like curry. It had savory flavour with some ingredients such as chicken, egg, vermicelli and beansprouts. I was not a laksa person so even it tasted good, I didn’t like it.
Betawi Soto
Also had coconut based soup, this betawi soto only contained beef, potato and also tomato. It also had savory flavour and so authentic. You should try it.
Chicken soto and Berenda egg (laced egg)
Mine was this chicken soto. It had savory flavour with some ingredients like chicken, boiled egg and beansprouts. It also had potato chips. And it served with rice, fried egg they called berenda cause it had kinda lace on its' round, it was crunchy but soft and had savory flavour. Also it had shrimp chip as a companion. I thought these menu were okay but not the best that they had.
We also still had
Squid salad with peanut sauce
They said they had no lettuce left so we ordered it without the lettuce, they changed it to boiled potato. It contained of noodle, boiled potato, fried tofu, and roasted squid. The sauce brought fresh sweet, savory and sour (because we pressed the lime to it). Anyway it also served with belinjo chips and contained sliced cucumber too and it was so tasty even without the lettuce.
And the price of the food there weren’t cheap, for 3 the menus we paid 319,935 IDR or around USD 21,16. But I think you should come there to find tasty Indonesian food.
