Beautiful.
reminds me so much of the Alta Garrotxa in Catalunya where nature has retaken possession of what visibly was once a very bustling habited area with its many ruined farms, chapels, water mills, stone walls, bridges etc.
I suspect, that just like in Mallorca´s Serra de Tramontana, it was once an area exploited by carbon makers who spent most their time up high, producing vegetal carbon, and only descended to sell their good in the larger villages and towns at the feet of the hills.

I wonder if they made coal...I know that in any case there was mostly small-scale farming and many, many chestnuts ^^!
I'd love to see the areas you're talking about to see for myself :)
