Discovering a Hidden Waterfall near an Old Hamlet in Ardèche
Hi everyone, I hope you are well. Today, I'm taking you on an exceptional hike as it's one of the most beautiful I've done in a long time ! We set off with my brother for the day, with the idea of walking up a river to some secret corners forgotten even by the people who live in the region and the nearby surroundings.
The little hamlet we are about to head for has been forgotten for over 100 years and indeed, when I looked it up on a map, it didn't seem to be there. It is the hamlet of Charmelan in the valley where the Grand Vallat flows, a stream with many swimming holes.
Above is the start of our walk, in the Grand Vallat valley.
What is interesting about this area is that it was highly industrialized at one time, around the 19th and early 20th centuries, and then everything was gradually abandoned as things became cheaper to produce elsewhere.
There were mills, spinning factories for silk and wool, all those activities that were powered by the many streams and rivers. All this time is over and the Ardèche has become once again a wild and preserved land where one can lose oneself and forget everything that makes up our modern and current civilisation.
A necessary journey to the past and the interior of our beings to which I invite you today !
However, many traces of the passage of humans at that time remain, such as this "pas d'âne", a series of stones placed in the direction of a full stream in winter, which still allows animals and people to pass.
The closer we get to the hamlet, the more traces of construction multiply, as with these mossy walls which, as you will see further on, never cease to remind me of pre-Columbian civilisations and their buildings as if swallowed by the jungle.
At one point, we go back down closer to the river to follow its course... As the terrain is sometimes very hilly and uneven, it is sometimes easier to follow the water, as Bruce Lee might have said ^^
We are accompanied by the neighbour's dog who never misses an opportunity to take a breath of fresh air as soon as she finds some water. She spends her time exploring and I think that where we do 10km, she easily does 20 to 25km !
Here is this corner lost in the valley ! A real paradise where you can feel the freshness of the falling water.
It's not a huge waterfall, but it's big enough to enjoy a swim in icy water at less than 10°C !
Above all, we take the time to let our body temperature drop a little, on a small sunny promontory.
But when it's time, you have to go. The water is even colder than I had imagined, but it's a delight... Once you've managed to get in, that is.
As for the benefits of showers or other cold water baths, you can do some research on Wim Hof's method.
Our guide and companion faithfully watches over the heights...
But now it's time to leave and we go all the way around the waterfall from the top to cross the little river...
A few minutes' walk higher up, we find the first traces of the remains of the humans who preceded us... Here, the remains of a small staircase invaded by moss.
I'm not lying to you, when I'm in this kind of context, I really feel like an explorer looking for a lost and forgotten temple in a tropical jungle. Even though this might sound like an extreme caricature !
Just around the bend in the path, the first high walls still standing appear before us...
Then, little by little, at a reduced pace, we enter the hamlet and the remnants of the old small streets invaded by fallen stones, trees that have grown, ivy and moss that cover everything.
Here, as this large room has no windows at all, we think it was a large barn for livestock or for storing foodstuffs.
Some of the structures are in a bad state of repair, but with enough resources, we could imagine restoring this kind of little paradise !
For others, like this mossy room with its crushed and mossy frame, the operation would be a big one, but basically, with me as with my brother, the motivation and the will are real and we'll say that it's rather the means that are lacking haha !
In this small structure, we discover a floor formerly made of metal grids stretched horizontally and we think that it was a drying room for chestnuts, one of the main products of the region !
As we make our way back, the number and proximity of abandoned houses diminishes and after bidding farewell to the hamlet, we set off along the same path by which we came.
The sun is already low on the horizon and with our heads still fresh from the swim and full of dreams of reconstruction, we head home. On the path, the umbellifers act as sentinels and guard the way until our next visit.
I hope you have enjoyed this wild ride in this unspoiled environment and I thank you for your visit and your time to read !
Take good care of yourself, I wish you a very good day,
See you soon,
<3

<3

Beautiful.
reminds me so much of the Alta Garrotxa in Catalunya where nature has retaken possession of what visibly was once a very bustling habited area with its many ruined farms, chapels, water mills, stone walls, bridges etc.
I suspect, that just like in Mallorca´s Serra de Tramontana, it was once an area exploited by carbon makers who spent most their time up high, producing vegetal carbon, and only descended to sell their good in the larger villages and towns at the feet of the hills.
thank you for sharing.
I wonder if they made coal...I know that in any case there was mostly small-scale farming and many, many chestnuts ^^!
I'd love to see the areas you're talking about to see for myself :)
Good day to you dear 👋
Thank you 😇

With great pleasure @anttn. Cheers! 😊
it is so beautiful there and kind of cool its not on the map like a hidden paradise for those that know of it
Thanks for joining the Wednesday Walk, its my pleasure to host it and see all the posts each week from all around the world, including yours, if you have time visit some of the other walks this week there are so many interesting ones
Yeah, this is definitely a mini heaven here, must be hot during summer ! But when close to the river, the fresh breeze will not be missing :)
Quite a visit! Thanks for sharing again this far-to-be caricaturist post or thread, as in SE Asia they carry sadness, these places, maybe willing to be re-inhabited again maybe not, nature seems to have adapted while we might in a near future need for more space like these if things go pear-shaped... have a good evening, best+!
PS: your dog doesn't need the Wim Hof technique, I'd need a couple :-)
You're welcome 😊
Hahaha !
Have a good weekend @sumotori ✌️
I would never take a dip in such a cold water 😂 I struggle with my 30 seconds cold showers from time to time. I know it's healthy but cold water is just not for me. I don't even like ice in my water 😂
You were so lucky to be accompanied by a dog. It must have been a lot of fun 🙂
Great photos as usually 🙂
Even that ? So yeah, it's really not for you 😂 !
Many thanks :)
The dog guide was great, she knew the walk way better than us haha !
Once you managed to get in… hahaha 🤣 bbbrrrrrrrr I can imagine.
What a find @anttn 🥰 beautiful… love walks like this. So serene and green all around.
Thanks a lot for sharing.
Have a great Wednesday 👋🏻😊 I did post an update today… first of many.

You are welcome 😊👋🏻
Thank you so much, I did. enjoy your new week! 😘
Ooooooooooh, @anttn - this is precisely the kind of blessed situation that I would LOVE to transfer to and to be active protagonist in bringing back to Living!!
A divine location, especially being such a good distance from 'cult'ure and mechanisations... I hope to connect with others, eventually, to do such a thing, and there are plenty of abandoned hamlets also in Italy. The water pools...oh, just perfection and perfectly clean drinking water, I imagine: if not, easily remedied with appropriate natural filtering beds.... Oh, I dream on and look forward so much to one day being in a wilder, cleaner place with more radical co-creative folk around me!
Thank you hugely for sharing and inspiring!
I think more and more of us are tired of the industrial complex in all areas and domains ! And if, as you say, we bought a hamlet in the Hive and with a team from here and elsewhere, this would be superb !
Thanks you for visiting here dear @clareartista and for leaving such beautiful energy and meaningful words 😇🌻
Have a good Friday and weekend in advance !
An awesome adventure indeed 😎
I'm glad you enjoyed this one 😇 !
