Wood hedgehog (Hydnum repandum)

Good day dear Hive Community, as always I would like to welcome you to my new post and hope you are well! In this post I would like to introduce you to a mushroom and hope you can learn something new.

Wood hedgehog can be seen here, which is also known under the scientific name Hydnum repandum. The mushroom is mainly common in deciduous forests and it is a valuable edible mushroom that can already be collected from August. Wood hedgehog is relatively widespread and easy to recognize for collectors and the most important distinguishing features are that on the underside of the hat many small stubble can be seen and if you lightly press or cut the fungus, the meat turns pink or yellow. The stem is white and the hat has a color that is somewhat reminiscent of ochre and the surface is mat and dry.

The mushroom is very mild in taste and on the whole I would call it a neutral tasting mushroom which has an unmistakable taste. From the appearance, it is somewhat reminiscent of the edible mushroom chanterelle and often these two mushrooms also grow very close together and you can often find them near trees and go into symbiosis. The fungus can be found in many places and it is particularly common in Europe, Africa or Asia and it prefers soils that are rich in lime. At the end of the post, I would like to mention that you always have to be careful when looking for mushrooms because of the risk of confusion and if you are not 100% sure, you should leave the mushroom!
