Vintage Photos - Lot 6 (465-468)
Several years ago I bought a flatbed scanner with a slide adapter to scan some old film slides that my grandparents had. After I finished scanning those, I picked up several batches of slides from Goodwill and on eBay out of curiosity. I am not sure why these commonly wind up at such places but I know that at least some of them have ultimately come from estate sales. Maybe family members just don't know what to do with them. I've seen them advertised as being for arts and crafts but I was more interested in their actual contents. Each slide is literally a snapshot in history. These pictures span from as early as the late 1940s to as late as the early 1990s. There are thousands of these slides. I will be scanning some from time to time and posting them here as an interesting way to look back at the past.
I'm using the term "batch" to refer to a group of slides I bought in a single purchase. Usually they are from the same ultimate origin. Typically, a batch will have 100s or even 1000s of slides.
I'm using the term "set" to refer to a subset of a batch that I scan together. There are normally four slides in one set because that's how many slides my scanner can scan at once. Likewise, a post will typically have a set of four slides.
This batch contains photos spanning from the late 1950s to the early 1980s. Other than these slides coming from eBay, I have no idea of their ultimate origin other than the clues provided in the photos themselves. The photographer seems to have been from Lansing, Michigan and many of the photos are from there. I think I've identified the photographer, see this post for more details.
These were all scanned with an Epson Perfection V600 Photo scanner.
The photos in this set were likely all taken in the 1960s or possibly 1970s in Michigan.
The first photo is labeled 'Jon Grad 64'. I started off asking ChatGPT about the uniform and the conversation eventually led to a probably identity of 'Jon J. Kipke, Central Michigan University, Class of 1964, Army ROTC'. If you are curious, see the ChatGPT conversation here: https://chatgpt.com/s/t_6abfdc42892c8191b3dc4104b5e6f98a
The second photo is unlabeled and undated but was probably taken in the 1960s or early 1970s. The sign identifies this as St. Joseph Park in Lansing, Michigan.
The third photo was taken in 1964 and is labeled '7th Ave. Plyg 64 Hawaiian Luau'. This was also almost certainly in Lansing.
The last photo is unlabeled and undated. It was taken in front of a Christmas Tree with presents so this was on or near Christmas, probably in the mid to late 1960s.

Fascinating series, @darth-azrael! 📸🕰️ I love the idea of treating each slide as "a snapshot in history", and the detective work in this set is great: starting from the label "Jon Grad 64" and arriving at a probable identity (Jon J. Kipke, Central Michigan University, class of 1964, Army ROTC) with the help of a uniform and a ChatGPT conversation is really impressive. As a former IT guy, I appreciate this clever mix of old film and modern tools. 😄
The "7th Ave. Plyg 64 Hawaiian Luau" photo is my favorite: it makes me wonder what the party was like, and it feels so alive despite being 60 years old! 🌺 The Christmas tree with presents in the last photo is lovely too. 🎄 It's touching that photos like these end up at estate sales and are given a second life by you. 🙏
Question: have you ever managed to find the family of one of the people in these slides, or someone who recognized a face or a place? 🤔
