Vintage Photos - eBay Set #1 (241-244)

I made some impulse buys after getting a new scanner and picked up a huge batch of slides a while back. These pictures span from as early as the late 1940s to as late as the early 1990s. These were from Goodwill and eBay (sometimes via estate sales). There are many thousands of these slides. I will be scanning some from time to time and posting them here for posterity.

This set continues a batch of slides that I bought on eBay a while back. I don't have as much to go on as to the ultimate origin of these compared to the previous batch I was working on. They came to me from eBay and most likely were picked up at an estate sale by the seller. Most of them seem to be taken in the 1960s and same individuals are included in many of the photos. It looks like there are some that were taken in Miami and some that were taken in New Jersey and perhaps elsewhere. I get the impression that Miami was a vacation spot for this family.

The first photo is dated 1968 and shows an older couple blowing out candles on birthday cakes. Maybe husband and wife but I suppose they could be brother and sister. They are kind of hard to read but I think the first cake says 'Happy Birthday Johnny' and the second says 'Happy Belated Birthday' but I can't read the name.

The next three photos were all processed in August 1966 and I think that they are a continuation of the photos taken at Aquaglades seen in the last set. The first shows a Spider Monkey named Elvis, the second some local plant life, and the third, the only one I can definitely say is from Aquaglades, features a sign that says 'Welcome to Parrot Island at Aquaglades, Fort Lauderdale, Florida'. Presumably they had parrots there.

Idk why, but I love this shit. Would love to try and find these places someday, see how much they've changed. I also think about that probably 99% of the people in these pics are dead....idk why, but it just occurs to me. lol

Slides like this show up all the time on eBay and Goodwill's auction site. Mostly I think they originally come from estate sales. It seems an odd thing to get rid of...pretty much the same as selling or donating a photo album. But I guess younger family members might not know what to do with them or care enough to find out. And there seems to be a demand for them from people who use them for arts and crafts stuff. Honestly, I think they should all be scanned for posterity. Sure, there's tons of photos from the pre-digital age but they are far more rare than they are today when everyone has a camera in their pocket. I can only scan so many though :).

I've scanned somewhere in the neighborhood of 3000 slides since I started doing this. I found at least one that actually was taken near where I live. I identified it because there was a van of a plumber with an address and phone number visible in the picture. For most of them it is hard to know where they were taken but now and then there is something that makes the location known. Going through these slides and not knowing what's going to be on them feels a bit like an archaeological dig.

Absolutely man!

Going through these slides and not knowing what's going to be on them feels a bit like an archaeological dig.

That's what I'm talking about. Who were these people? Where was this? What was the occasion??? I love the mystery of it all....as we will probably never know.
