Linarite Mineral
Good day dear community, I hope you are all well and you had a day full of interesting experiences! In this post, I would like to bring a mineral a little closer and hope you are able to expand your knowledge.
Recently, I photographed these two wonderful specimens of Linarite, which is a rather rare mineral which has been first discovered in the middle of the 19th century and has been described by the English mineralogist Henry James Brooke (1771 - 1857) as a new copper mineral. The first specimens were probably found in the Spanish autonomous province of Andalusia where it was found near the historic city of Linares, which is known for the numerous lead mines which helped the city to great wealth and where were essential factor for the economic growth of the area and also linarite was named in honor of the place of discovery. It is assumed that it was already mentioned before under other names a few decades earlier and the discovery quickly spread and more and different mineralogists decided to deal with the mineral and among them were August Breithaupt (1791 - 1873), Armand Lévy (1795 - 1841) and Ernst Friedrich Glocker (1793 - 1858) to which the current name can also be traced back. Linarite forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidation zone of copper or lead-containing mines and a well-known characteristic is that it only forms very small crystals which usually have a blue or green manifestation due to the content of copper and I also find it interesting that if you expose the mineral to strong heat, it can take on a typical black or gray color. Some specimens in which the blue stitch is particularly well recognizable resemble the structure of azurete or lapis lazuli, but there are some differences from the chemical composition and theoretically it would also be important as ore, but it is particularly known in the circles of collectors because of the rarity and otherwise there are no significant areas of application from an economic point of view. Sometimes it is also sold as a healing stone, but I would like to mention here at the end that it is alternative medicine and in case of illness you should always ask your doctor or pharmacist of trust for the right medicine to avoid complications!
Thanks a lot for stopping by and I hope you could learn something new about minerals! I captured these pictures with my Camera Sony Alpha 6000 plus 55-210 mm lens.
