A long and hot hike around 's Hertogenbosch (The Netherlands)
My sister and I have a new habit. Every now and then we go for a walk in an area we don't know. This time we decided to go to 's Hertogenbosch; a big city in the southern part of the Netherlands. We like the combination of culture and nature, so that is why we chose this destination.

Just outside the train station we crossed the rainbow colored crossing which was painted because of the Queer Arts Festival that was held that weekend.

Near the station there is a fountain with some dragon statues, including a golden one on top.
It was a sunny day and the dragon was shining beautifully in the sunlight.

's Hertogenbosch (also Den Bosch) is a city with a lot of history. At the start of the route we walked through a citadel. This impressive fortress was built in the seventeenth century and is open for public. On top of the citadel are two cannons (replica's?).

It was quite a hot day. The temperature was over 30 degrees celcius. After a few kilometers we left the hot stones of the city behind us and walked through a somewhat greener area. You can really feel the difference when walking in an area with trees and grass.

Another structure from the past we saw during our walk was this iron bridge from the former Moerputten railway. The bridge was built in the 19th century and connected Lage Zwaluwe with Den Bosch. The line was mainly used to transport leather and shoes from the industrial towns to Den Bosch.

They had to build this bridge because it's quite a swampy area.
The railway was closed years ago, but the bridge remained.
After leaving the bridge behind us we headed back to Den Bosch. It was a long straight path where the railroad used to be. It looked like we were waling into a green tunnel.

We made a small detour because we knew there was a wooden boardwalk through the Moerputten nature reserve. The boardwalk goes through a swamp-like area with a lot of vegetation. It seemed a bit like we were in the jungle.

There were a lot of birds and insects in the area and the water alongside the boardwalk and the high temperature resulted in a very high humidity.

After 5 ours and 20 kilometers we returned to our starting point near the central station. Before heading home we treated ourselves with some drinks. I chose this nice alcohol free beer from a nearby trappist brewery.
And I can tell you it tasted great!

Here are the route and the stats of the walk.
I hope you enjoyed my blog. Feel free to leave a comment.

i hope you did take the opertunity to try out some Bossche Bollen while you were there . https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bossche_bol
I've had them before and they are really nice, but with 30+ degrees, the chocolate would melt instantly.
And eating one neatly is already imbossebol 😉
true , it is way to hot this week in Holland , i need to consider to get an AC unit in this house if the landlord allows drilling holes in the outer wall
That's a hot day to go for a walk! Hope you put on plenty of sun cream. It's nice to go to random places isn't it, you never know what you'll find
It was warm indeed, but we took enough brakes and had a lot of water with us.
It's nice discovering new places.

That was such a walk with a bit of everything! But beware of the sun, as it is a lot more powerful than it was in the past years. I got some severe burns by mistake last year and never realised how far things can go.
Yes, that is what we like. Culture, architecture and nature.
The sun can be dangerous indeed. I wear a cap and try to stay out of the sun most of the time. I've had 2nd degree burns with huge blisters caused by sunburn myself when I was young, so I always try to stay out of the sun when possible.
And during a long walk in the heat, hydration is very important. So we're looking for places where we can refill our bottles before we go. In The Netherlands we have quite a few public water taps, so you sometimes find those along the route.
I have an app which shows them on a map.
Wow, that's such a cool and useful app!
Whoah that's quite a distance to walk, especially in these temperatures!
Pretty pictures, Den Bosch is nice 😀
Yes it was. We do this regularly, but in these temperatures it's different.
Den Bosch is really nice indeed, although we mostly visited the surroundings this time.
Walking and exploring is a nice habit.
