Market Friday Provides My Wife With Breakfast and a Hat
Today is #MarketFriday, a project initiated by @dswigle, and this post is my contribution to this project for this week.
If you want to learn more about this project and would like to participate, visit today's post by @dswigle.
My wife always goes out with me when I go out to take photos.
We have learned the hard way what the South African sun can do to you...well, I suppose not just here in South Africa.
I have spent a lot of time outdoors in the sun during my lifetime, and now I have to deal with the consequences in the form of skin cancer. Last year I had it cut out on my left ear and we thought I was done with it. But a few months later it appeared again.
As they cut right to the bone last time, the doctor said if they cut again, they might have to go into the bone, thus removing a part of my ear. So, I am currently on treatment, doing all we can to prevent that from happening. I've been on this treatment now for the past couple of months and it seems to be working so far, although it's quite expensive.
But, that means that I now try to stay out of the sun as much as possible, especially over the warmest time of day. Secondly, I never go out without a hat.
To get to the point, as mentioned, my wife always goes out with me and she loves the sun. But, dealing with what we are currently having to deal with, we are very cautious.
Last weekend, my wife mentioned to me that she remembered seeing a hat that she liked at the nursery down in Illovo, down on the South Coast.
Primarily, it is a nursery, but they also have a nice little craft market (where my wife saw the hat) on the same premises.
So I decided to get her the hat and off we went.
Having Breakfast.
It was still relatively early and we decided to stop over at The Pavillion shopping center to visit the local Wimpy for breakfast.
They had a nice special, called "The Meaty Grill" at R99.90.
I bought us each a cold drink to go with it. I misplaced the slip, but if I remember correctly, it was R20.00 for a cold drink.
We both had the same, so it worked out to be about R239.80.
At the time of writing this post, the exchange rate for USD/ZAR was R17.29.
That means breakfast cost us $13.87.
Off to the Nursery.
From there we left for the Illovo Nursery.
They have a beautiful little wooden bridge that takes you to a pond where we often like to sit down and just enjoy the peacefulness and tranquility of the area. I have shared some photos of the bridge in previous posts here on the blockchain.
But strolling around, I found another little bridge a bit further down that is clearly not in use anymore. But to me, it still had character.
We spent some time at the pond.
On the one side, they have this "floating pier" that you can walk onto. When we have the grandkids with us, it's always a treat for them when I take them to stand on it.
You have to be sure of your balance when stepping out onto it though. Stepping out from the solid ground, it is suddenly very "unstable" and moving around beneath you, just floating on the water. If you are not careful, you can easily lose your balance and end up in the water...lol.
Looking out over the water, they have this boat on the water, being decorated with flowers.
All around the pond, it's dense but colorful and beautiful.
If you have a peep at the first photo of the pond again (with the pier in the foreground), you'll see, at the top left, an art gallery that is visible.
We decided to walk up there and have a look at the art they have on exhibition.
Going up some stairs towards the art gallery.
I didn't take any photos of the artwork...I just didn't think the artists would be very appreciative of someone taking photos of their art instead of buying it...
But standing on the porch, outside the gallery, you have a nice view of the boat on the pond.
And then it even got a "passenger"...or was it perhaps the captain...lol?
We then decided to go to the craft market where my wife remembered seeing the hat.
To get to the craft market, you have to pass through the nursery which provides some colorful scenes along the way...
There is one little shop in the craft market I normally like to pay a visit to...(yes, even though I hate shopping...lol). In all honesty, I don't even know what else they have on offer, but what caught my attention the first time, is that they always have a beautiful display of knives outside.
I have bought two pocket knives there to add to my little collection in the past.
The one is a Browning.
The other one, I don't even know the name, but I found it interesting enough to buy.
It is also a pocket/"flick" knife, with a safety catch so that you cannot flick it by accident.
What made it unique to me, is the fact that it has a little "built-in"/fold-out torch.
I was actually pleasantly surprised with how functional such a little torch is. It doesn't make "daylight" around you. But when you find yourself in pitch darkness, it makes enough light to easily find your way without stumbling over stuff.
Oh yes...then the hat. Yes, I didn't forget about the hat...that is what we came for...lol.
We found the shop with the hats and they still had some in stock.
They actually had a special... Two hats for R100.00. My wife spoke to the shop owner and asked what we would be charged if she only wanted one hat...I mean...she can only wear one hat at a time...lol. The lady was very helpful and immediately said that we would then only pay R50.00 for one hat. Bargain!
At the exchange rate mentioned earlier, that works out to about $2.89.
We went back to our car and found these little guys waiting for us on top of the car. They looked at us so casually as if they were thinking... "gee, we thought you're never coming back"...
Anyhow, as we approached the car, they headed off in their own direction and that was the end of our visit to the Illovo nursery for the day.
Final Thoughts
Spending money on breakfast and buying the hat for my wife, we spent about $16.78 in total. But we also had some quality time to just relax and enjoy the peacefulness and quietness of the nursery.
Thank you for reading my post. I do appreciate it!

Cancer, the word alone is enough to incite terror, but you seem to be taking it in your stride. I hope you overcome it. As it is, my recklessness has left me with a nasty sunburn on my back. I haven't had one like ten years or more. Not only was it damn painful, but now that it is healing, the itch is driving me nuts. Lesson relearned. Funny enough, I was just recently told my husband that I need to invest in a hat such as this!
Now if I lived a little closer, I would have known exactly where to go! That is a beautiful hat and at a bargain price. It looks like a wonderful day out overall.
Thank you for your kind words, @pixelhuntersam. Yes, I tend to always remain positive about things.
Ouch, it sounds like the sun has really been very unkind to you. I can just imagine the itching now during the healing process. Yes, I think it might be a good idea to invest in a hat such as this. I don't want to sound all melodramatic...but take a tip from me...currently dealing with the consequences...It's better to be careful now and take the necessary precautions. You'll thank yourself later... I promise. I am still positive, but it is still not nice to have to deal with it, and sometimes it becomes highly frustrating.
But yes, we had a great day, thank you😊👍!
Appreciated it, I am definitely not going to be that dumb again. I have been avoiding the sun like a proper vampire since it happened. It's bad because I can feel the burned area getting scorched even through a shirt. So, I am just staying indoors during the day at the moment.
Hmmm, maybe I should get a nice black cape as well. I mean, Eskom has already ensured I have candles... 🤣
I think avoiding the sun would be a good idea for at least a while👍! I know that feeling of getting scorched again even through a shit after you have burned...ouch, not nice.
Yes, maybe you should get that nice black cape as well...
I love that...🤣! I love your sense of humor. Yes, Eskom is causing so much frustration, but they have presented some great opportunities for some really good humor too, such as what you have done now! Well done!
"I vant to suck your... errrrr... maybe not..."
What can you do but laugh, it's a lot better than the alternative 😉 Now, I wonder if I still have black nail polish somewhere... 🧛♀️ it is almost October after all... 🦇
🤣🤣
Awesome, @pixelhuntersam, just awesome! Go for it🙏😂!
Sorry to hear about the issues you are having with your health. Positive vibes are sent your way, I am so happy to hear that the treatment seems to be working. I know you said it is expensive, and to me, that is the big rub. Why are these things out of reach of those who can't afford it? Or even more, able to buy it, but, at a cost of their living? I truly believe in free healthcare.
I know! Off my soapbox!
The breakfast was wonderful! Meat-heavy for sure! You got your protein!!! I am glad your wife found a hat she likes. I haven't found one, but, I am naturally light blonde and get burned. So, for now, I am using a baseball cap when I run, unless the sun has gone down. I am glad she is covering up! I love your garden shop! Haven't they all diversified? Mine carried furniture even! Not my mom's flower shop! They went above and beyond to make it interesting.
I did like your little guys on the top of the car waiting for you! :)
This week is a big weekend here in the US! This weekend is Labor Day. The calendar calls for the end of summer and we will be closing it out with a large family picnic. While I have read through all the #MarketFriday posts, most twice, just because I really enjoy most of the posts. I happen to love the fact that I get so many high-quality posts, and the effort shows through. This week, some of you won't get the personal message I enjoy writing. I am running behind on time and I don't want to skip anyone's upvote or the reading of your post.
I hope you know how much it means to me to have so many people joining in on the fun. Hopefully, you will have learned a few more different ways to present #MarketFriday easier to present. I know some have already been thinking outside of the box and some use their market day - either way is great and I love it either way. Thank you, thank you for supporting #MarketFriday!
I have personally found there is always so much to learn about people, where they live, and how things are done in different parts of the world. For me, reaching out across the globe and learning about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, has been such a rewarding experience. We have become a melting pot of culture, but, it is still the rituals, festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... and what is normal for us? There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. We do differ in many ways, which makes us interesting and unique, but, there are many ways in which are so much alike.
Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

Thank you for the positive vibes! And yes, I agree with you 100% about free health care.
I often ask the question "what happened to the oath that all medical staff and practitioners take when qualifying for their profession? The oath, that states that life comes first, and that life and the saving of lives come first. Yet, the first thing you need to do when you need medical attention (even emergency medical attention), is to complete the forms, explaining how the bill is going to get paid. If you cannot provide security in the form of either a medical plan or paying cash, you don't qualify for medical attention...
I can talk about this from personal experience (a nasty one) and the experience of people close to me. Even whether you have a medical plan or not...somewhere you are going to run into trouble...but I won't "dump" that on you now.
My point is, @dswigle, no need to get off your soapbox. I fully support what you are saying. So, as far as I am concerned, speak out!
Yes, I'm also "light-skinned", so I also get burned very easily. But I am glad to hear you are taking precautions as best you can.
Enjoy your Labor Day weekend!
I find this interesting... I see you are referring to a "garden shop" while we know it as a "nursery". See, there I have learned something new again today. But yes, they all seem to be diversifying, aren't they?
They call them both here. The nursery is really the entire place and the garden shop is, really where the plants are. But, we use the term interchangeably. LOL
They were always nurseries until they added other things besides plants. :)
That's very intereting and it actually makes a lot sense.
Thank you for sharing that!
:))
This looks like a nice day out. I've never had a Wimpy breakfast before! Thanks for sharing.
It was a really nice outing. We really had a good time! Maybe you should try a Wimpy breakfast sometime.
Thank you for your feedback! I do appreciate it!
Enjoy your evening, @mypathtofire!
SA is definitely on my bucket list. I just need bitcoin to reach a new ATH first! 😂
Have a great evening too!
That sounds great! Both South Africa being on your bucket list, and looking forward to a new ATH for bitcoin!
