Market Friday: Boat Rides at Wilson's Wharf

avatar

Today is #MarketFriday, a project initiated by @dswigle, and this post is my contribution to this project.

While being out on my walk last week, I relived a boat ride we enjoyed a few years ago and I started looking at what is available now and what the rates are like.

All these photos were taken at Wilson's Wharf which is situated inside the Durban Harbor. It was early in the morning, just as the new day arrived and I was able to get some shots just as the sun was rising.

I had a look at various charter companies to compare their rates and what they have to offer.

Madevu Boat Rides.

The first charter company that got my attention as we arrived, was Madevu Boat Rides.

DSC_2911.jpg

Their rates are very visible and not too bad at all. At the time of writing this post, the USD/ZAR exchange rate was R16.25.

They have 1-hour luxury boat trips:

  • R160.00 per person for adults ($9.85).
  • R120.00 per child ($7.38)

They also have 30-minute harbor cruises at:

  • R100.00 per person for adults ($6.15).
  • R60.00 per child ($3.69).

They seem to offer other services too, but it is not fully displayed...well, not that I saw...

It was still early and they were not open yet, but I did get the impression that they would do their bookings telephonically...or from this little "office"...yet their boats are on the other side of Wilson's Wharf.

Let's pay them a visit first, and see what it looks like.

Inside the entertainment area of Wilson's Wharf, they have some nice images on display of their boats.

As can be seen in the photo above, they have 3 boats:

  • Madevu SA,
  • Madevu Royale, and
  • JamJar.

Let's go have a look at what they look like in real life.

  • Madevu SA.

As we walked out of the Wilson's Wharf entertainment area, we couldn't miss it.

DSC_3014.jpg

It has a unique appearance...almost "capsule-like", and as I walked down a little further, I took this photo to show how it stands out from the other boats.

DSC_2999-3.jpg

I was really fascinated by this boat and took more photos from other angles...

This one while standing right behind it.

And this last one, standing in front of the SPUR, taking this photo against the background of the sunrise.

  • Madevu Royale.

The Madevu Royale was docked just a couple of boats away.

The building visible behind the boat is the SPUR, where I stood to take the last photo of the Madevu SA against the rising sun.

We couldn't find the JamJar, so let's move on.

Isle of Capri Cruises.

Where you enter the Wilson's Wharf entertainment area, the set-up is almost like an indoor craft market.

This is also where you find the little booking office for Isle of Capri Cruises.

They are very visible and clear with what they offer to the public:

  • Whale and Dolphin Watching.
  • Party Cruises.
  • Fishing.
  • Educational Tours.
  • Birthday Cruises.
  • Fun Ferry Rides.
  • Evening Discos.

They also have images showing their boats, but the only boat I saw outside that clearly belongs to them, is DA BOSS.

DSC_2992.jpg

DSC_2991.jpg

According to the banner on DA BOSS, they also offer the following in addition to what is shown inside:

  • Scattering of ashes.
  • Harbor Cruises.

Let's move on to the last charter company for today.

Hakuna Matata Charters.

A few years back we went on a 1-hour cruise with them and it was great.

At the time (about 7 years ago), we paid something like R70.00 per person ($4.30 per person).

The current rates they are showing now are:

  • R150.00 per person ($9.23).
  • R100.00 per child under 12 years ($6.15)

(These are for 1-hour sea cruises.)

DSC_2924.jpg

They also have images of their boats outside their office, but as you look to the left, you can see the boat that we went out on.

The boat's name is My Girl.

DSC_2925-2.jpg

Their other boat is visible next to My Girl in the next photo. I think that boat is used more for harbor cruises.

DSC_2931.jpg

And to end this post, I'll share a memory of our cruise on My Girl, which cost us an additional R40.00 ($2.46 at today's rate) at the time.

And that's it for today, folks.

Thank you for reading my post. I do appreciate it!

Such an interesting looking boat, like a capsule as you say.
Great captures. I like the last photo of your memory. Perfect to add it here.

The harbour looks beautiful and peaceful without others around.

Venturing out to sea, we have explored around harbour and ocean on a couple of different vessels none looked so dynamic as this capsule you photographed.

Magic shots with sun across the water, finding more out about what Durban today has to offer.

!BEER Cheers to adventures, may they never stop.

What an awesome-looking yacht the first one is! That vessel is sure to attract attention wherever she goes! What a sleek appearance it has. Yes, please. To be honest, you should have shown that one first. Now, I am spoiled! :) This was a really interesting subject and I believe you are the first to present it! Congrats! I do love all the people joining #MarketFriday! They always try to think a little bit out of the box.

I can see that the price has practically doubled since the last time you went, but, with the way everything else is, I am surprised it is not more. It is a lovely memory that you saved for last. Last is always best in this case! Isn't it unbelievable? The prices have gone up so much, that it makes it unaffordable to go almost anywhere! Thank you for participating in #MarketFriday! I appreciate the time and effort that goes into putting a post together for the challenge. It is with great pleasure that I read through and realize how much we have all tried to include things in our world that may be unique to the area. I have learned so much about the different cultures of the world, especially the small things that go unnoticed except by those looking for them. Life is interesting, wherever you are, whatever you are doing. I hope the week has found you healthy and happy, as we all look to prosper in our way of life.

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

Rules of the Road to Join #MarketFriday!

  1. Go to the market, or anywhere that you pay money for a service. Museum, art gallery, bowling, barber shop, or hairdresser. Cultural event. You are allowed to think outside the box!
    Take pictures! Be creative!
  2. Tell us a little bit about the market or the event. Where is it? What brought you there? What did you buy? How much did it cost? Was it expensive? Did it go up or down? I don't need 50 pictures unless you are willing to explain them all.
  3. Post the pictures. Of course, you should tell a little bit about the ones you post. What seems obvious to you may not be obvious to all.
  4. Use the MarketFriday Community Platform to post (#hive-196308) This is not required but appreciated.
PLEASE Drop the link into the MarketFriday comment section so I can find it!!
  5. Following me and reblogging the post would be appreciated, but not a rule, more vision for more views on the #MarketFriday posts!
  6. You must put #MarketFriday by @dswigle somewhere on your post. Please. Please.
  7. Please check out some of the other #MarketFriday posts!

Thank you for your positive and warm feedback! I do appreciate it, @dswigle! I'm glad you also enjoyed that first yacht...So I'm glad to see it's not only me who is fascinated by it...lol!

I'm the first one posting on this subject...? Wow, that's awesome! Thanks for telling me. I never thought of it that way, but I'm glad to hear it👍!

Yes, the prices have practically doubled, but compared to the general cost of living, it is still reasonable. We are also members of an online platform - Hyperli - that promotes businesses online. We've done some research over the past weekend and found that by making use of their promotional specials, we can still go on a similar cruise for less than R100.00 (less than $6.10 currently) per person. We couldn't believe it when we saw it.

This coming Friday I would like to cover spending some time after getting off the boat...

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to share our posts on #MarketFriday.

Have a wonderful day!

I have never heard of it, but I looked it up, and reminds me of our version of it: Groupon Groupon is an American global e-commerce marketplace connecting subscribers with local merchants by offering activities, travel, goods, and services in 15[7] countries. Sounds very much like it. There is another one also, but basically the same.

Many of them give 50% up to 90% off. Usually, you have a limited time to use them, but it is a great deal!

The time spent after getting off the boat sounds awesome.

Have an awesome day! :)

Yes, we had Groupon here originally. But they withdrew from the South African market in 2016 to focus their capital on fewer countries (that's what I heard). That's when Hyperli came into existence in South Africa. It's very similar to Groupon.

You must have an awesome too😊👍!
