The Forth Bridge is an iconic railway bridge spanning the Firth of Forth near Edinburgh. It opened in 1890 and is regarded as a masterpiece of 19th-century engineering. The bridge is around 2.5 km long and famous for its striking red steel structure in the so-called cantilever design. Due to its historical and technical significance, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015. I didn’t want to miss out on this highlight, especially as it is really quick and easy to reach by bus from Edinburgh city centre.

Die Forth Bridge ist eine ikonische Eisenbahnbrücke, die den Firth of Forth nahe Edinburgh überspannt. Sie wurde 1890 eröffnet und gilt als Meisterwerk der Ingenieurskunst des 19. Jahrhunderts. Die Brücke ist rund 2,5 km lang und berühmt für ihre markante rote Stahlkonstruktion im sogenannten Kragträger-Design. Aufgrund ihrer historischen und technischen Bedeutung gehört sie seit 2015 zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe. Dieses Highlight wollte ich mir nicht entgehen lassen zumal es es wirklich sehr schnell und unkompliziert per Bus vom Stadtzentrum von Edinburgh erreichbar ist.

It was yet another rainy, overcast winter’s day. But that didn’t stop me. I was well wrapped up against the cold and damp, and when I arrived in the little village of South Queensferry and caught my first glimpse of the bridge, I already knew it had been the right decision to come here. So I strolled along the coast and photographed the Forth Bridge from various angles – sometimes using a tripod and an ND filter, sometimes just handheld.

Es war wieder mal ein regnerischer, wolkenverhangener Wintertag. Doch das hielt mich nicht auf. Ich war gut gegen die Kälte und Nässe geschützt und als im kleinen Örtchen South Queensferry ankam und die Brücke zum ersten Mal zu Gesicht bekam, wusste ich bereits, dass es die richtige Entscheidung war dorthin zu kommen. So spazierte ich die Küste entlang und fotografierte die Forth Bridge aus verschiedenen Perspektiven – manchmal mit Stativ und ND-Filter, manchmal einfach aus der Hand.

Given the weather conditions, a high-contrast black-and-white look seemed the obvious choice during post-processing. I really liked this look and decided to edit the entire series in this style. I also made sure to include a composite shot taken with an ND filter held in front of the camera. In the evening, I waited patiently for the bridge to be lit up, but it apparently wasn’t switched on or wasn’t working. Nevertheless, I was satisfied with my shots in the end.

Aufgrund des Wetters bot sich in der Nachbearbeitung ein kontrastreicher Schwarzweiß-Look an. Dieser gefiel mir sehr gut und ich entschied, die gesamte Serie in diesem Stil zu bearbeiten. Auch ein Composing mit vor die Kamera gehaltenem ND-Filter durfte dabei nicht fehlen. Abends wartete ich geduldig auf die Beleuchtung der Brücke, die jedoch anscheinend nicht eingeschaltet wurde oder nicht funktionierte. Dennoch war ich am Ende mit meinen Aufnahmen zufrieden.
