A Day With Yayoi Kusama

Haven't been in a museum for a long time

But I had to give this one a try since it seemed like a nice exhibition. I haven't really gotten into touch with this japanese artist, but unsurprisingly she is quite famous. What I didn't know is that there her life was actually quite difficult - and yet, perhaps it were exactly these struggles which contributed to her unique art style. Here is a bit of a background to her and the exhibition:

Yayoi Kusama (*1929, Matsumoto) is one of the most renowned artists of our time. Her iconic polka dots, pumpkin sculptures, and mirrored Infinity Rooms have become a kind of trademark and appear millions of times across social media. The exhibition takes visitors on an exciting journey through Kusama’s entire oeuvre, featuring more than 300 works—from her first drawing around 1934 to the present day—and spanning a wide range of artistic media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, fashion, performance, and literature.

What follows are some of the impressions I captured. There were also many many paintings which actually made up most of the space within the museum. But there were several rooms that were quite otherworldly.

These rooms essentially felt like being on a mushroom trip; visitors were also only allowed 30 seconds entry...

Finally, a sort of kaleidoscopic view from within a box of mirrors as well a view from the balcony roof top soaked in crimson. It portrays several sculptures from the artist.

Damn, I went to her museum for the first time in Tokyo when my family came to visit. That glow in the dark spot room looks so damn cool, cooler than anything in Tokyo hahaha. The mirror box looks the same in Tokyo though !
