Tuesday Neds Point Light

Neds Point Light

Today I will share a few shots taken on visits to Neds Point in Mattapoisett MA, about an half an hour drive from home, I like getting there early well before sunrise and hope to be lucky enough to catch some nice colors as the sunr rises, but even if not its still a nice spot to start the day

This post will focus on the lighthouse and here is a little bit about it

Ned Point Light as it is official called I believe is a historic lighthouse on Ned's Point Road in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts.
The lighthouse was built in 1838 at a cost of approximately $5,000, and named after Ned Dexter, a local farmer. Supervised by a local builder, Leonard Hammond, the lighthouse was constructed with a birdcage-style lantern similar to Bird Island Light found in Marion, Massachusetts.

All the stone used for the construction of the lighthouse was locally sourced, with most of it originating from nearby beaches.

Inside, Which I didn't get to see, are 32 granite steps that are cantilevered to the outside wall without the use of mortar. The original lantern used 11 whale oil lamps, each with its own parabolic reflector. And like other lighthouses I have read up on around here the Whale oil no doubt came from the New Bedford Whaling ships.

The Great Blizzard of 1888 significantly damaged the keeper's stone house, resulting in it being demolished and the building of a wooden replacement.

Following modernization in 1961, the lighthouse was reactivated in 1961 with its current 6-second isophase.

It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Mostly I post the shots from those taken earliest through to later in the morning, and for no real reason today I decided to do the opposite

Its a lovely spot, to walk around if your like me, but also has a few benches and a rock wall one can sit on, or of course as most who visit there seem to do you can park, and relax in your car and enjoy the sunrise

it has a good-sized green area as this shot shows part of, which I tend to walk around many times catching shots at different angles and getting my steps in

There's definitely something timeless about lighthouses. Even with all the new technology, they still have their place of prestige on so many coasts!

I love all the historic light houses on the east coast. That one is a beauty and so nicely maintained! It's survived many storms over the years even when the keeper lost his stone house! lol

Those were some nice shots of the sunrise, and I love that last one with the light painting. Great job on that one! That design has so much nice symmetry, well done!

Is the weather continuing to improve and cooperate?

Nice colors in all these shots. That blue and green is calling me. Spring time is needed. We had a couple of very cold mornings after a week or so of nice weather.
