Eight-Legged Pets

I haven't seen such a cluster of lightning in Finland before this evening, and due to the very heavy rain, I didn't quite manage to get the entire lawn mown before it fell. It is about eighty percent done though, and what I left is hidden in the back corner, behind the house, so I will take that as a pass.

However, I probably would have finished the whole lot if I had started fifteen minutes earlier, rather than taking some shots of a little spider that was stretched out on its web near the garage.

Take the opportunities as they arise.

Note: I dislike spiders.

A lot.

But since coming to Finland, I have learned to accept them without quite the fear that gripped me in Australia. For starters, they are far, far smaller here and I think, pretty harmless on the poison scale. And now that we live in an old house with an old garden and a cold basement that has wood stored in it, spiders are definitely not an uncommon sight. This one however was a little different to the usual suspects, so with the clouds threatening and the thunder in the distance, I grabbed my camera.

It is unusually warm for this time of year, with the temperatures in the low twenties today, and as said, it is stormy, making it very humid, even with the light breeze, which made it hard to get these shots. The web was stretched about three meters between the wall and some plants, with the little fella at roost in the middle, gently swaying back and forth, protecting whatever it had already captured in its trap.

What was interesting was when I coughed, it raised its legs up to attack, even though I was a fair way away. I assume that since spiders don't have ears (from what I remember), it could feel the vibrations in its web and the sharpness of the sound put it on guard. I tried to get a decent picture, but it was difficult on the angle it was, and trying to hold the flash to fill, because I had to shoot straight up into the sky. I need to get better with a flash.

I was shooting on a 60mm prime lens with an off-camera flash I was holding on one hand, which again, is something I need to get better at. I tend to be pretty lazy when it comes to setting up shots like this, but remember - I did get eighty percent of the lawn mowed also!

This weekend, we also have the little dachshund we babysit from time to time visiting, so my wife and Smallsteps are super happy, despite the rain. He is admittedly a pretty cool dog and it has been a while since he has visited, so it is nice to have the change of pace in the house.

And a much nicer guest, than the usual eight-legged variety.

I've seen horror videos of the insects in Australia. I would be scared of spiders too, if I had to deal with buggers that big here in the USA. Australia bugs go crazy!

I can only imagine. I remember my father showing us the movie Arachnophobia and he told us it was a comedy. I lived in the basement of our home and was not amused at all!

haha! I saw that at some school trip when I was twelvish - I saw Nightmare on Elm street 3 when I was 7, and Arachnophobia freaked me out far more.

Ooo, I'm with you...don't get on with spiders! I do, however, like dachshunds though...I get on well with those and it surprises me not at all that he is pretty cool.

Dachshunds might be one of the coolest dogs. Every one of them has a personality far larger than their size.

This post about the spiders, reminded me about the summer vacations on my grandmother's house when I was a child. She always said, like you did, when a spider appeared, or a spiderweb was stretched from a corner on ceiling of her house "Rain is coming..." usually other older persons could say that because their knees start to hurt😅
Since in Portugal we don't have dangerous spiders, or at least they are very rare, I think, I was never afraid of them. And they appear, the expectation to smell of "petrichor"... So good memories!
By the way: Great photos! Even that you know that you could make them even better 😂
Good luck with the rest of the moaning😄

I haven't heard of the rain is coming thing, though if true, perhaps Australia would be flooded! :D

Wow, you have a very cool word to explain something I had never really thought of before :)

I've just learned the word, one day that I was listening to a podcast that I believe that was from Tim Ferris, were he mentioned the science about the scent that is so peculiar, and that everyone can recognizes!

I’ve never had a close experience with spiders
I read something about them when I was in primary school which made me scared of them but I found out it was a superstition
I’ve built up the act of not liking them till now

I lived in countries were most of the spiders are inofensive, so usually if my wife is afraid of one, I gently take it out of the house using my hands. Lucky me!

That's smart that at least you got the front done. That's usually what I try to do when I am in a pinch like that. The more you talk about Finland, the more familiar it sounds to me, then I came across this little factoid...

The five north westernmost counties of Michigan's Upper Peninsula are the only counties in the United States in which Finns are the largest ethnic group

lol - I didn't know that. I am guessing you might be able to find some authentic Finnish food around there.

Beware.

Lot's of fish for sure. Lake Superior has some of the best whitefish in the world. They also have a really good sausage up there called cudighi or something like that.

I don't like going near or touching spiders, but I am ok with seeing them around the house. I know they kill all sorts of bugs and insects, so that is a plus. Although, I am only good with those that are small and non poisonous. Tarantulas or black widows are a quick nope. Huntsman spiders will definitely make me get out of the room as quick as possible.

I dislike huntsman - they are so fast. The redback in Australia too... and the trapdoors... and well, all fucking spiders.
