Hoverfly on Chicory

A few photos of whats blooming outside...

Profile

Wild Chicory is blooming. And hoverflys apparently have been waiting 🙂

Chicory

Delicate, small, pale blue flowers.

Redstart

Day lilies are starting to bloom also but not mine yet. This is a neighbors. Also a redstart captured. Redstart are only here from about May to September.

Milkweed buds

Milkweed is also blooming.

Milkweed

Lots of milkweed around here which usually leads to lots of Monarch butterflies 🙂

I just got my chicory planted last week, so no flowers for a while. But I do have the others here, except the redstart which I've never seen here in Western Mass.

Do you use the chicory roots? or just grow them for the flowers? I've often thought of foraging some of the chicory roots but have not.

I grow them mostly for the flowers but the impetus was to have it in case, for coffee substitute.

Keep an eye out for monarch larvae. I finally saw one the other day on the milkweed.

There is a field near our home that is full of milkweed. A local school goes to that field every year to collect monarch larvae.
