Visit to the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden - Brazil Series #12 [ENG-ESP]

Despite being a big city with many buildings, congested streets and cement, Rio de Janeiro also has a lot of nature. Besides its famous beaches, it is surrounded by mountains, forests and in general a lot of greenery, which gives the people who live there and tourists the possibility to visit several places to disconnect from the urban landscape.

A pesar de ser una gran ciudad con muchos edificios, calles congestionadas y cemento, Rio de Janeiro tiene también mucha naturaleza. Además de sus famosas playas, está rodeada de montañas, bosques y en general mucho verdor, lo que da a sus habitantes y a los turistas la posibilidad de visitar varios lugares para desconectarse del paisaje urbano.

One of them is the Botanical Garden, which I went to visit on my second day in the city. Guided by my map, I walked from Ipanema beach to there, it was a very pleasant walk and in less than an hour I arrived.

Uno de ellos es el Jardín Botánico, que fui a conocer en mi segundo día en la ciudad. Guiada por mi mapa, caminé desde la playa de Ipanema hasta allá, fue un recorrido muy agradable y en menos de una hora llegué.

To enter you have to pay an entrance fee, but it was not expensive. As soon as you set foot there, the freshness and beauty of the place catches you.

Para entrar hay que pagar entrada, pero no era cara. Apenas pones un pie allí la frescura y belleza del lugar te atrapan.

It is huge, about 137 hectares, and was founded on June 13, 1808 by decision of Dom Joâo, who was at that time the Portuguese prince regent. His idea was to use this space as a gunpowder factory and also as a place for plants from other parts of the world to acclimatize.

Es enorme, tiene unas 137 hectáreas, y fue fundado el 13 de junio de 1808 por decisión de Dom Joâo, quien era en esa época el príncipe regente portugués. Su idea era usar este espacio como una fábrica de pólvora y también como un lugar para que plantas de otras partes del mundo se aclimatasen.

Since 1995 its official name has been the Research Institute of the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, and it is considered one of the most important in the world in terms of botanical research and biodiversity conservation.

Desde 1995 su nombre oficial es Instituto de Investigación del Jardín Botánico de Rio de Janeiro, y está considerado como uno de los más importantes del mundo en cuanto a investigación botánica y conservación de la biodiversidad.

I have little knowledge of plants, I can identify let's say the most basic ones, but here almost everything seemed exotic to me, fortunately there were signs and I could see what they were called. According to what I read in a brochure, the collection of plant species here exceeds eight thousand.

Yo tengo poco conocimiento de las plantas, puedo identificar digamos las más básicas, pero aquí casi todo me pareció exótico, afortunadamente había letreros y podía ver cómo se llamaban. Según leí en un folleto, la colección de especies vegetales que hay aquí pasa las ocho mil.

The botanical garden is also home to some animals such as monkeys, fish and a large number of birds and insects.

El jardín botánico es además el hogar de algunos animales como los monos, peces y gran cantidad de aves e insectos.

Also for those who want to do research, here they can have access to the bibliographic, biological and museological collection of the institution.

También para los que quieren investigar, aquí pueden tener acceso a la colección bibliográfica, biológica y museológica que posee la institución.

But undoubtedly recreation is the main reason why most people come to the botanical garden, to walk among cozy paths and breathe the aromas of nature. One of the spaces I liked the most was the water lily lake, it is super relaxing to watch those round leaves in the water and the fish moving around.

Pero sin duda la recreación es el principal motivo por el que la mayoría de la gente viene al jardín botánico, para caminar entre acogedores senderos y respirar los aromas de la naturaleza. Uno de los espacios que más me gustó fue el lago de los nenúfares, es súper relajante observar esas hojas redondas en el agua y los peces moviéndose alrededor.

Another fascinating thing are the large trees that you can see and touch here, I stopped at several of them to photograph them, thinking that surely many are in this place before the botanical garden was created.

Otra cosa fascinante son los grandes árboles que puedes ver y tocar aquí, me detuve en varios de ellos para fotografiarlos, pensando que seguramente muchos están en este lugar antes de que fuera creado el jardín botánico.

This place is also a cultural center, because it hosts exhibitions and events such as concerts, workshops, lectures, etc.

Este lugar es además un centro cultural, porque alberga exposiciones y eventos como conciertos, talleres, charlas, etc.

Anyway, whether you like plants or not, I recommend visiting the botanical garden if you are in the city of Rio de Janeiro, I'm sure you will love it.

En fin, tanto si les gustan las plantas como si no les prestan demasiada atención, recomiendo visitar el jardín botánico si andan por la ciudad de Rio de Janeiro, estoy segura de que lo amarán.

At the end of my visit I took a walk around another nearby attraction, the Rodrigo de Freites Lagoon, which is salt water and offers several activities for people, such as boat rides, a bike path, a pedestrian path of about 7 km and places to eat.

Al terminar mi visita di una vuelta por otra atracción que hay cerca, la Laguna Rodrigo de Freites, que es de agua salada y ofrece varias actividades para la gente, como pasear en barquitos, una ciclovía, camino peatonal de unos 7 Km y lugares para comer.
