Paria Peninsula, Sucre - Venezuela [ENG-ESP]

Greenery, sea, picturesque villages, exotic flavors and cheerful people are some of the things I found during my visit to the Paria Peninsula, Sucre State (Venezuela). The opener is Rio Caribe, a town that is like the gateway to this beautiful region, a whole tropical cocktail.

Verdor, mar, pintorescos pueblos, exóticos sabores y gente alegre son algunas de las cosas que encontré en mi paso por la Península de Paria, estado Sucre (Venezuela). El abreboca es Río Caribe, pueblo que es como la puerta de entrada a esta bellísima región, todo un cóctel tropical.

Founded in the early eighteenth century, Rio Caribe preserves in most of its streets the colonial architecture, those typical houses with courtyards and internal gardens, many of them converted into inns. It's quite hot here and you are grateful that there are trees on some sidewalks to walk in the shade when the sun is at its peak.

Fundado a principios del siglo XVIII, Río Caribe conserva en la mayoría de sus calles la arquitectura colonial, esas típicas casas con patios y jardines internos, muchas de ellas convertidas en posadas. Hace bastante calor aquí y se agradece que haya árboles en algunas aceras para caminar por la sombra cuando el sol está en su punto álgido.

As in any city or coastal town, there is also a boardwalk here and of course it is one of the most dynamic points, because the fishermen set up their market here daily, people come to shop and tourists come to browse or walk along the long promenade that is next to it.

Como en toda ciudad o pueblo costero, aquí también hay un malecón y por supuesto es uno de los puntos más dinámicos, porque los pescadores montan su mercado aquí a diario, la gente viene a comprar y los turistas llegan a curiosear o caminan por el extenso paseo que está al lado.

Apart from the beautiful sunsets in front of the sea, another thing you can do here in the evening is to go for dinner to taste the local gastronomy. There are several restaurants with typical dishes, such as fish curd, a kind of very tasty omelet. The cuisine of the Paria peninsula has many foreign influences, one of them is that of its neighbors from the islands of Trinidad and Tobago, who in turn are influenced by the cuisine of India. Of the local products, coconut and cocoa are widely used in the preparation of dishes.

Aparte de los lindos atardeceres que se ven frente al mar, otra cosa que puedes hacer aquí al anochecer es ir a cenar para probar la gastronomía local. Hay varios restaurantes con platos típicos, como por ejemplo el cuajado de pescado, una especie de tortilla muy sabrosa. La cocina de la península de Paria tiene muchas influencias foráneas, una de ellas es la de sus vecinos de las islas de Trinidad y Tobago, quienes a su vez tienen influencia de la gastronomía de la India. De los productos locales se usa mucho el coco y el cacao en la elaboración de los platillos.

Let's now take a look at some of the beaches I visited near Rio Caribe, all very different but beautiful. The first was Los Cocos beach, only about 10 minutes away. It is huge, with lots of coconut trees for shelter and golden sand.

Veamos ahora algunas de las playas que visité cercanas a Río Caribe, todas muy distintas pero bellas. La primera fue playa Los Cocos, a apenas unos 10 minutos. Es inmensa, con muchos cocoteros para resguardarse y arena dorada.

The day was windy and the water was a bit rough, not that the waves were big but they could unbalance you a bit. I didn't go too far, I only dived about three meters from the shore.

El día estaba ventoso y el agua algo alborotada, no es que las olas fueran grandes pero sí te podían desequilibrar un poco. No fui demasiado lejos, apenas me sumergí a unos tres metros de la orilla.

I like to swim when I go to the beach but these creatures I show below were everywhere so I limited myself. On the sand there were many dead ones and in the water you could see others but I don't know if they were still alive. I was told that they are the "aguamalas" and that they tend to appear from time to time around here, if they stick to you they leave your skin burning and who knows what else.

Me gusta nadar cuando voy a la playa pero estas criaturas que muestro a continuación estaban por todas partes y por eso me limité. En la arena había muchas muertas y dentro del agua se veían otras pero no sé si aún vivían. Me dijeron que son las "aguamalas" y que suelen aparecer de vez en cuando por acá, si se te pegan te dejan la piel ardiendo y quien sabe qué más.

The second beach I went to from Rio Caribe is farther away, about an hour, and is the most famous of the Paria peninsula, called Medina.

La segunda playa a la que fui desde Río Caribe queda más lejos, como a una hora, y es la más famosa de la península de Paria, se llama Medina.

The entrance to Medina beach is full of vegetation, being the protagonists the palm trees. When you arrive you wonder where is the sea?, because you have to walk a few meters to discover it.

La entrada a Playa Medina está llena de vegetación, siendo protagonistas las palmeras. Cuando llegas te preguntas ¿dónde está el mar?, porque tienes que caminar unos metros para poder descubrirlo.

It is not a very long beach, its waters are calm but cold, I don't know if they are always like that or it is because there was little sun the day I went.

No es una playa muy extensa, sus aguas son tranquilas aunque frías, no sé si siempre son así o es porque había poco sol el día que fui.

Although there are services for visitors, the atmosphere is very quiet, as if there was no one else there, it easily looks like the stage where at any moment a pirate ship from another era could arrive.

Aunque hay servicios para los visitantes, el ambiente es muy tranquilo, como si no hubiera nadie más allí, fácilmente parece el escenario donde en cualquier momento puede llegar un barco pirata de otra época.

Playa Medina is part of what is known as Costa Verde (Green Coast), a corridor where protected green areas, several beaches and villages with few inhabitants predominate, that is, a tourist concept in harmony with nature.

Playa Medina es parte de lo que se conoce como Costa Verde, un corredor donde predominan las zonas verdes protegidas, varias playas y pueblos con pocos habitantes, es decir un concepto turístico en armonía con la naturaleza.

Finally I show you a not so publicized beach of the Paria peninsula, its name is Caracolito. It is small but its waters are perfect for diving, the water is warm and I could go several meters away because it is not deep.

Por último les muestro una playa no tan publicitada de la península de Paria, su nombre es Caracolito. Es pequeña pero sus aguas son perfectas para sumergirse, el agua cálida y me pude alejar varios metros porque no es honda.
