By the mountains of Venezuela's 1st National Park [ENG-ESP]
Observing a city from a high point is one of the many rewards that hiking gives you and getting into the mountains that surround it allows you to better understand the geography where it is settled. The photos I share in this post are from the route that goes from the hill of the Maracay hotel (Aragua state) to the recreational area Las Cocuizas, a hike of about 12 km.
This entire area belongs to the Henri Pittier National Park, the first one decreed as such in Venezuela in 1937. It has 107,800 hectares and is populated by a great diversity of animals, especially birds, more than 550 species. There are also reptiles and mammals such as felines (ocelots, pumas), sloths, deer, among many others, oh! and red howler monkeys, whose voices I heard on one part of the trail.

As the city receded behind me, I could see Lake Tacarigua or Lake Valencia, which with its 350 square kilometers of surface is the second most important freshwater lake in Venezuela (the first is Lake Maracaibo).
I continued on my way and my eyes met the extraordinary landscape of the rugged mountains that belong to the coastal range. Behind them all is the Caribbean Sea with its exotic turquoise waters.
On this route there is no shade and the area is very hot, so you have to start very early in the morning, wear a long-sleeved shirt, a hat and plenty of hydration. Sometimes a cloud or two covered the sun but only for a few minutes.
After a couple of hours walking comes a part that is pure downhill, the land is somewhat slippery, so don't be careless. Then you get to a flatter part and the Las Cocuizas resort is near, before that you can take a look at the petroglyphs in the area.
The route ends here and if you are hot you can dive in the river, you can also buy something to eat because this area is touristy and has services. To return you don't have to go the same way up the mountain, in front of Las Cocuizas is the road and you can take a bus to the city of Maracay.
Until the next adventure!
