A tangible symbol / Un símbolo tangible

I remember that ever since elementary school, children in Venezuela have been taught the importance of both the country’s national symbols (the flag, coat of arms, and national anthem) and its natural symbols (the national tree, flower, and bird), but the reality is that when you go out on the street, you rarely see the latter around.

Recuerdo que desde la escuela primaria, a los niños en Venezuela nos enseñan la importancia tanto de los símbolos patrios (bandera, escudo e himno nacional) como de los símbolos naturales (el árbol, la flor y el ave nacional) del país, pero la realidad es que, cuando sales a la calle, de estos últimos poco se ve por ahí.

That’s what came to mind when I was walking down a street and the bright yellow of some flowering trees caught my eye. They were Araguaney trees (Handroanthus chrysanthus), the national tree. Around this time of year, they’re in full bloom and certainly don’t go unnoticed, but for a tree that’s supposedly our national tree “on paper,” I feel like they’re not very common in towns and cities.

Eso fue lo que vino a mi mente cuando pasé por una calle y el intenso amarillo de unos árboles florecidos captó mi atención. Se trataba de unos Araguaney (Handroanthus chrysanthus), el árbol nacional. Por esta época sueltan sus flores y no pasan desapercibidos, pero para ser "en el papel" nuestro árbol nacional, me parece que su presencia es poca en pueblos y ciudades.

The same is true of the national flower, the orchid (Cattleya mossiae). It is not often found in public spaces, for example, serving to highlight Venezuelan identity.

Lo mismo pasa con la flor nacional, que es la orquídea (Cattleya mossiae). No es común que esté en espacios públicos, por ejemplo, resaltando la identidad venezolana.

Several years ago, the Ministry of the Environment launched a reforestation initiative called "Tree Mission", which covers not only protected areas but also urban spaces. I believe the Araguaney tree should be given its rightful place, not just symbolically, and that we should start planting it on a large scale in all of Venezuela’s towns and cities. It would be an amazing sight to see so many streets and avenues turn yellow every year between January and April 😍.

Hace varios años el Ministerio del Ambiente creó un plan para reforestar llamado "Misión Árbol", que aparte de zonas protegidas también incluye a los espacios urbanos. Creo que al Araguaney se le debería dar su lugar no sólo simbólicamente, y empezar a plantarlo a gran escala en todos los pueblos y ciudades de Venezuela. Sería un tremendo espectáculo ver cada año muchas calles y avenidas teñirse de amarillo entre enero y abril 😍.
