The majestic Flamboyant tree (Eng/Esp)

One of the most striking trees, whose colorful flowers adorn the landscape of tropical regions, is the flamboyant tree (Delonix regia). And at this time of year, at the start of the rainy season, it is in full bloom.

Although it is not a native species, it has adapted very well in my country, Venezuela, and graces the city’s streets, avenues, and parks with its majesty.

During my walk through Michelena Park in the city of Maracay, I was able to admire it in all its splendor. It is a very leafy tree with bright green leaves and flowers ranging in color from red to orange.

Its petals and sepals are large and come in different shapes. This is a typical characteristic of the Fabaceae family, formerly known as the Leguminosae. The central petal is white with yellow stripes.

The flamboyant’s fruits are also striking—they are long, dark brown pods containing many seeds. And while the plant continues to bloom, it is also in the process of fruiting. I saw bumblebees flitting among the flowers, searching for nectar and aiding in pollination.

As the fruits ripen, they fall to the ground and split open to release their seeds, which will germinate if conditions are right.

But here in the park, competition from other plants and maintenance and cleaning efforts prevent the plants from continuing to grow. If that weren’t the case, there would be a large forest of flamboyant trees.

I took photos of other trees with very distinctive trunk textures, like the thorns on this ceiba tree.

There are trees that shed their bark, which falls off in pieces, creating this mix of colors and textures.

On this walk, as always, Isis came along with me. She has a lot of fun chasing squirrels, birds, lizards, and any other animal that moves, as well as rolling around in the dry leaves and damp earth.

Uno de los árboles mas vistosos, que adorna con el color de sus flores el paisaje de las regiónes tropicales, es el flamboyan Delonix regia. Y en esta epoca del año al inicio de la temporada de lluvia, esta en plena floración.

Aunque no es una especie autóctona se ha adaptado muy bién en mi país Venezuela y adorna con su majestuosidad las calles, avenidas y parques de la ciudad.

En mi recorrido por el parque Michelena en la ciudad de Maracay, lo pude admirar en todo su esplendor. Es un árbol muy frondoso de hojas muy verdes y flores de colores entre rojo y anaranjado.

Sus pétalos y sépalos son grandes y de formas diferentes. Esto es una característica típica de la familia Fabacea antiguamente llamada Leguminosas. El pétalo del centro es de color blanco con rayas amarillas.

Los frutos del flamboyan también llaman la atención, son unas vainas largas de color marron oscuro, que contienen muchas semillas. Y mientras la planta continua floreciendo también está en proceso de fructificación. Vi abejorros revoloteando las flores buscando néctar y ayudando a la polinización.

Los frutos al madurar caen al suelo y se abren para soltar las semillas, que si tienen las condiciones adecuadas germinaran. Pero acá en el parque la competencia con otras plantas y las labores de mantenimiento y limpieza no permiten que las plantas continuen su desarrollo. De ser así habría un gran bosque de flamboyanes.

Hay árboles que mudan su corteza y se van cayendo en pedazos creando esta mezcla de colores y textura.

En este paseo como siempre me acompañó Isis, quien se divierte mucho correteando a las ardillas, aves, lagartijas y cualquier otro animal que se mueva y tambien revolcandose entre las hojas secas y la tierra humeda.
