Grey Heron
A while back, I grumbled about some folks scaring off a heron during my photo shoot. But hey, no big deal – what doesn't work today might just pan out in a few days. Actually, that sounds like it could be some profound philosophical quote. When I'm famous enough to have my musings in school textbooks, make sure this one makes the cut.
Dead calm, a glassy water surface, and perfect lighting meant the heron was creating a killer mirror image. So in one shot, you get two herons – the real deal and its reflection.
Photographing a hunting heron is a photographer's dream because their hunting strategy is basically to play statue – just standing totally still, eyes locked on the water. They can hold that pose for what feels like forever, giving you plenty of time to snap the perfect shot. When some tasty prey swims close, the bird strikes like lightning, typically swallowing the whole meal – fish or frog – in one go.
Před nějakou dobou jsem tady s určitou nelibostí konstatoval, že mi při focení nějací lidé vyplašili volavku. Což ale není nic nenahraditelného – co nevyjde dnes, to může vyjít po pár dnech znovu. Vlastně mě teď napadá, že by to mohl být takový filosofický citát. Až budu slavný tak, že moje výroky vejdou do školních čítanek, tak na tento nezapomeňte.
Bezvětří, klidná hladina a příznivé světlo způsobilo, že se volavka pěkně zrcadlila ve vodě. Takže na jedné fotce jsou vidět volavky dvě – jedna skutečná a jeden odraz.
Volavka při lovu se fotí dobře, protože její lovecká taktika je stát nehybně a pozorovat hladinu. Takhle vydrží stát dlouhé minuty a člověk má dost času na to, aby si ji vyfotil tak, jak potřebuje. Když pak připlave do blízkosti volavky něco k snědku, pták prudce zaútočí a svou kořist (rybu nebo žábu) zpravidla spolkne v celku.

The story about photographing storks is very interesting. Wow! You have managed to clearly describe the beauty and uniqueness of these birds, as well as the challenges in photographing them.
